August 26, 2007
The Albertson Academy ‘93 started off the East Meadow Covanta Tournament playing one of New York’s elite teams, the New Rochelle Revolution. After a scoreless first half, New Rochelle scored early on in the second half taking a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later Albertson forward Glenn Hyams equalized. Hyams wasn’t done though, with 30 seconds left Steven “Mateo” Jimenez played a through ball to Hyams who slid the ball past the New Rochelle goalkeeper. This gave Albertson a 2-1 lead, which they held onto and won the game.
In their second game the Academy ‘93 took on another one of New York’s elite teams, the Smithtown Kickers. Albertson wasted no time at all, five minutes into the game Landon Baker played a cross in to midfielder Jon Teller who headed the ball into the bottom right corner. This gave Albertson a 1-0 lead. Landon Baker struck 15 minutes later sliding a goal passed the Smithtown goalkeeper. The half ended with a 2-0 lead in favor of Albertson. Albertson struck once more in the second half on a top shelf goal by Glenn Hyams. The game ended by the score of Albertson 3 – Smithtown 0.
In Albertson’s third and final game of the day they took on two time Eastern New York State Champions, the FC Somers Lasers. Albertson took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the game on Ryan Cupola’s first goal in an Albertson uniform. This is how the game remained until their were five minutes left in the game when Glenn Hyams scored his fourth goal of the tournament giving Albertson a 2-0 lead. FC Somers was able to get one goal back on a penalty shot, but it wasn’t enough as Albertson won 2-1.
In Albertson’s first game of Day 2 they took on Valley Stream Forest. 10 minutes into the game midfielder Jon Teller was fouled in the penalty box. Sure enough it was Jon Teller who took the penalty shot. Teller came through sliding the ball past the Valley Stream goalkeeper. Albertson was unable to add anymore goal despite hitting the uprights two more times. But it didn’t matter, Albertson won by the score of 1-0.
