2009 NWBL CHAMPIONS
VERTONE CUTTERS
It was the first time since 2004 in which a franchise won a championship in their first year. It was the second time in NWBL history, the last in 2007, a team won the championship with a sub .500 record. The year brought an NWBL championship and an East championship to the Vetrone Cutters organization.
In the first round, the Cutters took out the Rapids. After winning game one, the Rapids tied the series at 1 a piece. The Cutters took a 2-1 series lead in game 3. In game 4, the Rapids led 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth. The Cutters scored three runs to win the game and move on to the championship, against the Cannons.
The Cutters fell down 4-0 after the top of the first but rallied for three in the bottom half. The Cutters eventually got out to a 11-6 lead and never looked back. They took game one, a big game one, 16-6. The Cutters took game two by the score of 4-2. Needing only one more win for a championship, the Cutters piled on runs. Up 9-0 in the fifth, the Cutters knew it was over. Vetrone won the game 11-6, winning their first championship.
We give our congradulations to the Vetrone Cutters and their first NWBL championship.
