HAWKS 15th at PROVINCIALS
April 28, 2007
The Durham Attack REDHAWKS had a dissapointing finish at Provincials in terms of Rankings, but still they were a team to be proud of.
In Pool play the girls played easily their best volleyball of the season. Passing, Defence, Setting, hitting, was extremely good in the first two Matches, as they defeated Forest City Blue, and South Essex Bandits in straight sets. The third match was against Forest City Green, they showed why they were the Provincial Silver Medalist. Our Girls fought hard but Forest City was just too strong.
Going into the playoff round with the 2nd seed in our pool should of given us an advantage, but as we are warming up in walks 5th see National Capitals. Again the HAWKS were at times great but we just couldn't adjust quick enough against the tips from the Caps.
Day two was just not our day as we lost the final two matches to Waterloo, and Milton.
The finish to the day does not reflect the way the girls played. Sometimes as coaches you forget that these athletes are kids, with so many other things going on in their 16 year old lives. Yet still there they are playing through injuries, diving into benches, sitting on the bench and coming into pressure situations and expected to perform.
I have so much respect for these girls to put themselves through this, and they still come away with a smile on their face, show up for practice and prepare themselves to do it all over again.
Thank you to all the girls for your dedication to this great sport, I am so proud to be a part of your team.
HAWKS FINISH 7TH IN OTTAWA
April 1, 2007
In Ottawa, the Durham Attack 16U REDHAWKS will take the 7th seed into Provincials Later this month in Cambridge.
After finishing 2nd in their pool, the HAWKS were matched up with Durham Attack 15U Black in the cross-over for the second straight tournament. After having a comfortable 23 - 19 lead in Set 1, Attack BLack came back strong to set up a very exciting first set. After trading points with exciting rallies the REDHAWKS finally ended the first set winning 28-26. The HAWKS used this momentum in Game 2 to win the Match 2-0.
This set us up against Waterloo Tigers in the quarter final. The girls were excited heading into the Match with the possibility of reaching our goal of top 4 in the tournament. The girls played well but unfortunately couldn't get many attacks through the BIG Block of the Tigers, who went on to win Set 1. In set 2 the Tigers were able to continue their strong play at the net forcing the girls to be creative offensively. Down 18-12 the HAWKS slowly started to figure out ways pass the block spreading out the offence and had tied the game at 18. The Tigers were able to defeat the Hawks 25-21 to win the Match 2-0.
In the final two matches of the day the REDHAWKS looked disappointed that their goal of top four was not to be met. However they did play some good volleyball to place 7th heading into Provincials.

REDHAWKS finish 6th in TIER 1 Debut
February 17, 2007
After a long day of volleyball and some interesting calls the 16U Durham Attack REDHAWKS managed to have an impressive debut in OVA Tier 1. Although there would be no hardware to take home, the girls made their most significant jump in the rankings starting the day out ranked 11th and finishing the day holding the 6th seed for the next event.
After a very slow and frusterating start in Round Robin play the girls were up against Durham Attack 15U Black. After having very limited success against the strong younger team in the past, the REDHAWKS were able to play a very strong match to defeat 15U Black 2 games to 1.
This set up a quarter final with yet another fellow club opponent in 16U Black. The Girls played hard but it wasn't enough as Attack Black swept the REDHAWKS 2-0. With nothing but pride left to play for the REDHAWKS were up against the National Capitals to see who would play for 5th place. This was a match that the coaching staff was very proud of the way the girls played. There was a sense of control and confidence that the girls started to believe that we belong in Tier 1 and are going to compete. The Hawks were able to sweep the capitals 2-0.
We were up against Waterloo Tigers in the 5th place game and lets just say it was an interesting experience. After failing to put the Tigers away in game 1 after having two comfortable leads the Hawks were on the loosing end of a 30-28 score. In game 2 there were to many other extra curricular events happening to be focused completely on the game. So we will gladly take the 6th place seed and work hard to improve our ranking going into Provincials.
We are very proud of our girls for the way they handled themselves in their first TIER 1 Event of the season. We know we belong and are looking forward to competing even harder in March. Congratulations to Chris, Melissa, Kevin, and the DURHAM ATTACK 16U Black for their GOLD Medal victory.
RED HAWKS TURN IN GOLDEN PERFORMANCE
January 13, 2007
In Newmarket, the Durham Attack 16U RED HAWKS won the TIER II Gold to move into TIER I for the next event.
It was evident early that the girls were ready to make the jump to TIER I. In match 1, the girls were up against a great defensive team in the Russell Ravens. After splitting the first two games 25-21 the girls won a hard fought game 3 17-15. Taylor Cumming had a great start to her day with 8 kills, while Ursula Toaze and Kellie Downing led the team with 10 kills a piece. Erin Campbell's great serving kept us in control. Stephanie Harper set up 19 kills while Alex Mcleod set up 7 in a game three victory.
Match 2 brought a hard the hitting Peel Selects who defeated the girls in the semi-final in Barrie. It took a total team effort to defeat Peel as a number of girls contributed in the win. Danielle Smithen was a spark defensively digging up 3 balls to go along with a kill. Vanessa had 2 huge blocks and had 3 kills. Erin Campbell had 5 kills, while Iva Pantic and Elissa Whittington had 2 kills and 2 blocks each.
After finishing first in their pool the girls had their sights set on reaching the final. The quarter finals saw the HAWKS up against the South County Essex. The girls played their most consistant match of the year as they were firing on all cylinders defeating South County 25-15, 25-20. Erin Spraggs led the HAWKS with 9 kills. Ursula Toaze had 7 while Taylor Cumming served up 6 aces. Andrea Titus stepped up her play in the back starting many offensive plays and contributing with 5 digs.
The semi final saw the girls continue their strong play defeating Forest City Blue 25-20, 16-25, 15-12. Durham was lead by the setting of Stephanie Harper. Stephanie had 21 assists spreading out the offence keeping FC off balance. Taylor Cumming was hitting all over the court racking up 9 kills to lead the HAWKS to the final.
The final was another match against Peel. After splitting the first two matches the girls knew they would have to play tough in order to win the GOLD. The girls were able to step up their good play even more to defeat Peel 25-21, 25-22. Kellie Downing was great in the final connecting for 10 kills. Ursula Toaze was great hammering 9 kills including one of the hardest we've seen all year. Stephanie was again great setting up the offence dishing out 23 assists.
It was a great day of volleyball, the coaches were impressed with the fact that you were able dig down deep when you faced adversity.
It was a pleasure to see all the girls have such a passion every game. Thanks for making it fun for us.
