First Day of Practice - What to Expect
I hope everyone is getting ready for some
football because the first day of practice is only a week away!
Our first day of practice will start with a meeting of all Texans and their parents on the football field. Gabe Chapman will make some introductions and have a few words to share with the entire Texans family before we break off into teams. At this point, some GM's may ask parents to stay for a team parents meeting, so please be on the look out for this request. Players will be issued their equipment during this practice. It's very important that players try on ALL equipment before Tuesday's practice. This includes game pants. It is important that we resolve any equipment sizing issue as early as possible. The last thing we want is to be dealing with game pants that don't fit on the day of the first game. |

What if my son wants to play in his uniform? The answer is always NO. Football uniforms should only be worn during supervised practices and games. Safety is the biggest concern and we want to make sure that the boys are using proper technique at all times. Also, given the heat this time of year, it is important that players be monitored for heat exhaustion especially when dressed in their uniform. Letting your young athletes dress out in uniform and play unsupervised tackle football with their friends is extremely dangerous so make the smart choice and say NO. |

Hydration, Hydration, Hydration It is critical that all players come to practice well hydrated. The boys should be drinking plenty of water throughout the day to prepare their bodies for the heat. If they wait until they are thirsty to drink it's too late. We will be providing plenty of water breaks during practice and keeping a close eye on the boys for any heat related issues. All players should bring a water jug to every practice and game. |

Team Moms What youth sports league can function without a team mom? During the first week of practice the GMs will be looking for volunteers to take on the role of team mom. This role is vital to the success of your son's team so please consider volunteering. If you are interested in filling this role please contact your sons GM. |

Game Day Jobs - Chain Gang Each week, until the games begin, I will be highlighting a volunteer position that must be filled at each home game. Please take a moment longer to consider this position. We have all seen officials working the chains at football games so you know the drill: keep the down marker correct and move the changes down the field. Unfortunately we don't have the luxury of paid officials to work the chains in youth football. In our league the home team is required to provide 3 people to work the chains at each game. It's a lot of fun watching a game from this position so give it try. Team moms will coordinate the volunteers for each game. Unless your coaching, this is the closest you will get to the action! |

Next Week - Sports Nutrition - What to eat before practices "How many times has this happened to you? Practice is at 6pm, your son or daughter has just completed their homework, you’re driving them to practice, and they haven’t eaten anything yet. Probably more often than we would like. As a coach, there’s nothing quite like the site of an athlete wolfing down the remains of a Big Mac as practice is about to begin."...
