The Brunswick Railroader Baseball program has been one of the most successful High School programs in the state of Maryland for the past 35 years. Since 1989 the Railroaders have won 6 State Titles, 12 Regional Titles,4 Frederick County Titles,and 5 M.V.A.L. Titles.In that time the Railroader program has produced 72 scholarship players,and has many team and individual records in the Maryland State book. Also in that time frame the program has produced 11 All State players in Jason Kasch 1990, Joe Lucas 1991, Scott Frye 1992,Steve Goode 1997, Adam Eshbaugh 1998, Andy Maught 2000, Alan Webber 2001, Kevin Goode 2001, Brian Baugher 2003,  Andrew Wanger 2015, and Oliver Ellison 2022,and 2023.Brunswick plays in the tough CMC Conference, and is a member of the 1A West Region.

Alex Frye continued his dominance on the mound as the Junior lefthander fired 5 strong innings against Walkersville picking up his 3rd win of the season. Frye surrendered no runs on just 4 Lion hits. He fanned 5 and issued just 1 walk. Frye has now pitched 15 innings and has not given up an earned run. Colin Pearre picked up his second save of the season firing 2 strong innings giving up no runs and no hits. He struck out 4. The Railroaders got on the board in the 3rd inning as Ty Kaunas double to the fence in centerfield scoring Conner Ohler and Peydan Mcdonald whom had both singled. Brunswick added a single run in the 6th inning as Tyler Lowery tripled to the gap in right center and scored on Pearrres deep sac fly to rightfield. Brunswick added an insurance run in the 7th as Carson Eye pinch running for Connor Mullaney scored on Koltin Boyers single. Ohler had two hits on the day, as did Boyer. Brunswick returns to action on Monday April 8th as they host Clear Spring. The Railroaders will then host the Middletown Knights on April 10th and Oakdale on April 12th. All games start at 4:30.

14 runs on 17 Railroader hits coupled with the dominant pitching of Rosder Junior Colin Pearre made for a great season opener for Brunswick as they traveled to Warrior land and hammered the Blue and White with a 14-1 triumph. Pearre was dominant on the mound firing 4 innings surrendering no runs off three hits while fanning 10 Warrior hitters. His fastball was clocked at 87 and he also had total command of a changeup and nasty slider. Koltin Boyer and Payden McDonald each collected 3 hits on the day. Tyler Lowry and Conner Ohler collected two hits with doubles. Connor Mullaney Nate Borawski and Ty Kaunas collected two hits each as well. Willie Frye garnered an RBI single as well. Zack Via threw the fifth and final frame for the Railroaders. He was reached for 1 unearned run off two Warrior hits. He also collected one k. We came to play today said Head Coach Roger Dawson. When you get a pitching performance like we got from Pearre today along with 14 runs on 17 hits good things are going to happen. I loved our intensity and ability to hit in the clutch. The Railroaders travel to Frederick High School to take on the Cadets on MondayMarch 25th then travel to Clear Spring on Wednesday March 27th. They will return home on March 30th at 12:00 in the first game of the Neil Keller Memorial Tournament.

The Railroaders scored 23 runs in two contest while not allowing a run in either game as well as they captured the 2024 Neil Keller trophy. Zack Via picked up his first varsity win as he pitched 4 scoreless innings against Hancock in the opening game. Via did not allow a hit. Brunswick prevailed in that game by a score of 10-0. Jeremy Bel pitched a scoreless 5th inning surrendering one hit. Connor Mullaney went 2-3 with a three run homerun  and garnered 4 RBIs on the day. Koltin Boyer also collected 2 hits. In the nightcap and championship contest the Railroaders bested Fredrick High by a score of 13-0. Alex Frye picked up his second win of the season. He surrendered no runs on just 3 Cadet hits. Nathan Borawski came on in the 5th inning and threw a very live fastball and recorded thre k's. I liked the fact that we came out in the championship and put Frederick away early. In the first game it took 3 innings to get going. Seven runs in the first frame set the tone. These comments came from Head Coach Roger Dawson. The Railroaders improve to 5-0 on the season and play at Catoctin on Wednesday April 3rd and then travel to Walkersville on Friday April 5th.

After a slow start the Roaders finally got things going plating 10 runs in the final 5 innings handing the Hornets an 11-5 loss. Tyler Lowery was blistering with the bat going 3-3 with all doubles and 3 RBIs. Ty Kaunas went 2-2 with a solo home run and an rbi single. Nate Borawski also doubled for the Railroaders. Brunswick used 6 pitchers in the contest as they all had solid outings limiting Damascus to 5 runs only 2 which were earned over the 9 inning game. Damascus has a really nice ball club said Railroader Head Coach Roger Dawson. They can swing it some. Today wasn't pretty as we still made several mistakes but somehow we find a way to be on the positive side of things. We hit in the clutch and our pitchers performed well off the bump.  The Railroaders are now 2-0-1 in pre season games this year. They open up against Boonsboro on Friday March 22 Md at Warriorland.

The Railroaders handled the Frederick Cadets on Monday by a score of 5-1. Alex Frye went 6 strong innings off the mound surrendering one unearned run off 5 Cadet hits. Tyler Lowery collected three straight strikeouts in the 7 th inning to secure the win. Conor Mullaney collected a solo homerun as Koltin Boyer and Peydan McDonald had two hits each. One of McDonald's hits was a double. Nate Borawski doubled as did Conner Ohler. Colin Pearre and Tyler Lowery each singled. On Wednesday March 27th the Roadrrs picked up a huge win against Clear Spring by a score of 6-4. Lowery got the win in 5 innings of work. He surrendered 3 runs off 4 hits with 7 k's. Colin Pearre got the save in two innings of work. He surrendering one run off no hits with 6 k's. Ty Kaunas mashed the ball for the Railroaders going 3-3 with a two run homer and two doubles. He collected three RBI's on the game. Connor Mullaney collected two hits for the Roadrrs. Nate borawski collected an rbi double and Lowery an rbi single. Payden McDonald doubled as Pearre singled. The Railroadrrs improve to 3-0 on the season and play Hancock at noon on Saturday in the Neil Keller Tournament at Brunswick High School.

Railroader senior Tyler Lowery has accepted a scholarship offer to Frederick Community College for the 2025 season. Lowery a righthand pitcher and utility guy that can play anywhere including catcher made the decision last week.  Rod Bennett Head Coach at Frederick said they are excited about Lowery signing with them. We knew he could pitch but are excited about the way he swings the bat too. Railroader Head Coach Roger Dawson said he thinks Lowery made a good decision. Tyler has not hit his ceiling yet and Frederick will allow him to grow as a player and possibly be a D1 guy in a year or two. Their program is second to none and Tyler has found a great home. I'm excited for him. The Railroader fraternity would like to congratulate Tyler on this stellar achievment.

It's almost that time of year ago where the Railroader faithful will be able to enjoy BHS baseball at Lee Merriman Stadium. The Railroaders are already two games in as far as pre season contest playing Urbana and Jefferson County West Virginia. Brunswick played solid baseball against Urbana on Friday March 8th, seeing solid pitching performances from several arms including many underclassman. Tyler Lowery collected 3 hits as Ty Kaunas homered and Conner Ohler and Justin Ricketts both doubled. The Railroaders ended up on the winning side of an 8-5 score. The Railroaders then hosted Jefferson County on Tuesday March 12th. Again the Railroaders saw several solid pitching performances. Brunswick collected 10 hits on the night. Conner Ohler again doubled. Alex Frye threw two innings of shut out baseball with 3 k's. Sloppy defense in the 9th frame allowed Jefferson to tie the game up which ended in an 8-8 tie. Head Coach Roger Dawson made the following comments. We try to play the best competition we can in these early contest. Urbana has been in the 4A State final the last two years and Jefferson is a West Virginia powerhouse. We played good enough to win these contest. I like that we have some depth off the mound. We collected 10 hits against Urbana and 10 hits against Jefferson. Double digits in the hit column is nice. We are a long ways from being where we need to be but early on we showed we can compete with anybody. Other then the sloppy defensive inning against Jefferson in the 9th we have played solid defensively. It's my job to have us ready by next week. The Railroaders host Damascus on Saturday March 16th at 1:30 in another pre season bout.

Railroaders Junior right hand pitcher Oliver Ellison has signed an athletic sccholarship to Coastal Carolina for 2024. Ellison a rising Senior at Brunswick went 4-3 this season with 1 save. With a fastball that touches 92 along with a great arsenal he will be looked upon to anchor the Railroader staff again next season. Ellison still has a ceiling that he hasnt reached yet and has already alerted the interest of professional scouts, making him a possibility for the 2023 draft. Congratulations goes out to Oliver for this stellar achievment.

The Brunswick Railroaders have made their name known across the state as they claimed the 2016 Title a championship that moved them ahead of Calvert Glenelg and North East Cecil to accumulate 6 banners and put them only behind Arundel for all time titles. The Railroaders have now won 6 state titles and are the winningest 1A team in the state. Arundel A 4A school has won 10 state banners. The only 1A school close to the Railroaders is St. Michaels off the eastern shore with 4 championships. Along with their 6 State Banners, the Railroaders have also won 12 Regional Championships. The Frederick News Post has annouced its first team all area selections and the Railroaders are happy to annouce that Right Hand Pitcher Oliver Ellison and Centerfielder Koltin Boyer have made that team.  Ellison who is off to Coastal Carolina sported one of the lowest E.R.A.'S in the county at 1.29.He also was at the top in the county with 74 strikeouts. He also batted .349 and collected 8 RBI'S.

Boyer roamed centerfield for the Railroaders. In 74 at bats he sported a .432 average. He stole 7 bases and only committed one error in 46 assist.

Congratulations goes out to these young men on such a great baccomplishment.

Long time skipper Roger Dawson reached yet another pinnacle in his illustrious career as he will be inducted into the Frederick YMCA'S Alvin Quinn Hall Of Fame in Feb. Dawson was informed of his selection in November of 2015. He has been the Head Coach at Brunswick for 31 seasons as was an assistant for 4 years prior to him taking over the reins. The Brunswick native played for the Railroaders from 1980-82. His coaching career is one to be admired. Dawson has won 378 games along with three State Championships. His teams have also won 8 Regional Championships along with 3 MVAL Titles and 3 County Championships. Dawson was selected Frederick News Post Coach of the Year in 1993' 1996' and 2001. He was selected as Maryland District 1 Coach of the year in 1996' 2001' and again for 2015. He Coached the Md Crown All Stars in 1997' and 2002. His 2015 team won 18 straight games a county record along with 23 victories also a county record on their way to the Md State Title. Dawson's 300 victory mark make him the winningest coach in Frederick County history. The Railroaders would like to congratulate our coach on this stellar accomplishment and are proud of his i2016 induction into the Hall.

What a season for Railroaders Baseball. Alot of great things happened and we would like to mention them. The Railroaders amssed 23 wins this season not only a school record but also a Frederick County record. The Roaders put together an 18 game win streak also a county record. The Railroaders had 10 players with 45 or more at bats with averages above .300. The Railroaders broke a school and State record for doubles with 66 two baggers. Ryan Capstick collected 13 doubles beating the school record of 12 held by Jeremy Lowery 96 and Kevin Goode 2001. Brunswick had three starters with 6 or more mound victories. Ryan Capstick 7-0 Andrew Wanger 6-0 and Doug Pearl 6-1. Doug Pearl stole an amazing 25 bases. Taylor Itnyre made the Brooks Robinson All Star game played at Camden Yards being the first Railroader to do so since Brian Baugher in 2003. The Railroaders placed an amazing 5 players on the MVAL Antietam 1ST team. Ryan Capstick, Taylor Itnyre, Doug Pearl, Joe Rindone, and Andrew Wanger. Andrew Wanger posted an ERA of 0.91 in 46 innings pitched. Coach Roger Dawson reached Maryland State High School legendary status as the 2015 Railroaders helped him win his 300th game, giving him an overall record of 360-215 The Railroaders won their first Antietam Title and first 1 A West Title.

Not too shaby a season most would say. Lets hope the Railroaders can keep that win streak in tact in 2016 and continue to make the smoketown fans proud.

Head Coach : Roger Dawson is entering his 31st season as head coach and 35th season overall. A former All M.V.A.L, All Area selection as a Railroader in 1982. Dawson played colleigately at Frederick Community College,and Shepherd College. Took over as Head Coach in 1993. Dawsons teams have won 8 Regional Titles,4 County Titles, 4 M.V.A.L. Titles,and  State Titles in 1996 2015 and 2016 .Dawsons 1996 team collected 69 doubles a state record and his 2000 team hit 49 homers another state record. Under his guidance Kevin Goode hit 13 homeruns in 1999 another state record that stands today .Dawson's 2000 team recorded the best record ever in M.V.A.L. history when they went 17-1. Dawsons 2015 team collected 18 straight wins a county record along with 23 victories on the season another county record. With Dawson at the helm the Railroaders won an unprecedented 21 straight games from the 2015 season into the 2016 season yet another Frederick County record. Dawson over saw right hand pitcher Andrew Wanger who accumulated a record of 20-4 over his career at BHS as the Roader ace collected another state record with back to back shutouts in the state final in 2015 as well as 2016. Dawson was named Frederick News Post Coach Of The Year in 1993,1996,and 2001.He was selected as Frederick News Post Coach of the year for entire sports season for 2016. Dawson's 2015 squad was named as the best high school baseball team to ever take the field in Frederick County by the Frederick News Post Sports. County Sports Zone selected him as the 2016 Coach Of The Year .He was selected as Maryland District 1 coach of the year in 1996,2001, and 2015.. Dawson coached the Maryland Crown All Star team in 1997,and 2002. He was selected as the Head Coach of the very 1st Mid. Md. Baseball All Star Classic for 2006, and coached the 2012 team as well as the 2016 team. Dawson was voted MVAL Coach of the year in 2000, and 2001. Dawson was inducted into the Alvin G Quinn Sports Hall Of Fame in Feb Of 2016.Coach Dawson reached yet another milestone as he won his 375th game in 2022 and finished the season with 378 total victories edging him even closer to the 400 mark which only a few have ever reached in Maryland Public Schools history. Dawson's record at BHS stands at 387-236 He has a .672 winning percentage. 


Asst Varsity Coach : Jayson Mobley will be entering his 11th year in a Railroader uniform. Mobley spent several seasons in Walkersville, and was Head Coach in 2006. Mobley is a familiar face in the Brunswick Baseball community as he has played for the Brunswick Orioles for many years. Mobley adds a tremendous amount of experience to the Roader staff, and will likely be used as the hitting coach. He will also be in the 1st base box for 2017.

Asst Varsity Coach : Mark Tarleton enters his 8th season in a Railroader uniform. Tarleton has been a coach at the little league level for years and has had great success. Mark is an athletic coach who will carry alot of the bp load and will be used with several aspects of the game, including the bull pen. Tarleton will also work with the catchers at times. His knowledge of the game and knowledge of the players because of his experience at the youth level are true attributes.

 

Pitching Coach : Jeff Axline. Jeff returns for his fourth straight season with the Railroaders. Axlines 2014 staff posted an ERA of 2.40 the lowest in yearsbut topped that in 2015 as they posted a 2.07 era. A student of the game Jeff traveled with Dawson to several minor league parks over the summer to get top notch instruction fro the Orioles pitching coaches and Director of Pitching Rick Peterson. He will be incorporating alot of that information and philosophy into the Railroader staff.

Asst JV Coach : Jesse Ault another former Railroader player(2003) will be entering his 4th season as a Railroder Coach. Ault a fine shortstop in his playing days will primarily work with the infielders. Ault will also carry alot of the batting practice load on that level,as well as work out of the bullpen on game days.

 

Asst JV Coach : Steve Dinges 4th season.. Steve was a former Railroader that was an ALL MVAL All Area selection at 1st base off the 1990 State Title Team. He knows the Railroader way. Dinges also has coached in the Brunswick feeder systems and knows the players well.

 

Head JV Coach : Tyler Itnyre 3rd season. Tyler another former Railroader 2010 will take over the reins from Mike Minch as Dawson has named him Head JV Coach.. Itnyre an all MVAL All Area selection in 2010 went on to play at West Virginia State University, Frederick Community College, and University of Charleston WV. He graduated from Charleston as he was a two year starter there.

The Brunswick High School Baseball facility, otherwise known as "Merriman Stadium," has long been considered one of the finer baseball stadiums around the area. Located on Cummings Drive, and just a short walk from the high school itself, the home of the Railroaders is equipped with all of the neccessities that any baseball purist could appreciate. The field boasts a brick-dust infield, a substance that holds up in the spring rains year after year. Along with the grass baselines, the BHS field also has fungoe circles on either side of homeplate, giving the park a "major league" feel. Astroturf surfaces can be found in front of the pitching mound dirt, and behind the homeplate circle. These surfaces provide two spots where BHS pitchers and coaches can hurl batting practice without damaging the surrounding dirt/grass field surface. Spacious dugouts are found on both sides of the field, with the hometown Railroaders occupying the 3rd base dugout. Fences align the top step of both dugouts, giving the players a place to lean while focusing on the game. Speaking of fences, the entire fence that surrounds the field is covered on top with plastic piping, an element that has prevented countless injuries over the past several years. A batting cage sits down the right field line, outside of the fence, giving the Railroaders and the opposition ample opportunities to tune up for a game. Bullpen mounds sit down the right and left field lines, with the Railroader bullpen containing an astroturf surface in the catcher's area. The Railroaders also have the advantage of scheduling night games if the situation calls for it as the BHS facility is equipped with lightpoles that surround the field. Fans are not left out either. With a concession stand, bathrooms, press box, and plentiful seating (bleachers down 1st and 3rd, covered bleachers behind home plate, lawn chair area), the Railroader home field gives fans every opportunity to relish their experience at the ball game.
