Incoming Freshman earns All-American Honors
Steven Hopkins, a Tahoma Junior High student recently earned All-American honors during the 2008 National Freestyle and Greco wrestling tournament. The tournament was held over an eight day period in Fargo, North Dakota. In order to receive All-American Honors a wrestler must place in the top eight at the tournament. The national tournament is a qualifying tournament where only each state’s best wrestlers even qualify to participate. Hopkins who won our states triple crown (all three styles of USA Wrestling) ended up being an All-American in both styles at Fargo, placing 4th in Greco and 5th in Freestlye. Steven will be a part of the Tahoma Bears wrestling team next year and is hoping to make an impact on the team as a freshman. Other Tahoma wrestlers, JR Rea, Kevin Tao, Michael Milat and Joey Palmer, also partisipated in the tournament each winning multiple matches.
New Tahoma Assistant Wrestling Coach Tim Kitchen
Coach Kitchen was demonstrating some freestlye turns at practice on Monday. We are excited to welcome coach Kitchen into the Bear family. Make sure you introduce yourself this weekend at the team BBQ.
Former Tahoma Star Jens Pulver
Former Tahoma State Champion Jens Pulver recently fought in publicized fight with Uriah Faber. Above is a picture of Jens the day before his big fight showing off his Tahoma Wrestling Pride.
Three Tahoma Bears placed at this year's tourney leading to the team to a 9th place finish. Sophomore Nick Bayer won state at 160 pounds, while returning state champion Kevin Tao took second this year at 130 pounds. Tyler lamb placed for the second time, this year taking 5th place at 125 pounds.
Bears Send Eight to State
For the second year in a row, Tahoma will have eight wrestlers competing at the state tournament. The team is led by Kevin Tao. Kevin, a team captain, won his second regional title this past weekend and will be in the title hunt at state. Nick Bayer also won his second regional title and has put himself in a great position to make a run at the 160 pound title. Tyler Lamb finished in second place to top ranked Kyle Komata, Tyler will be looking to improve on his 4th place finish from last year. Jordan Higa and Jesse Whitton both finished third in regionals and will be taking their second trip to the Tacoma Dome. Ryan Goranson, JR Rea, and Konner Knudtsen, will all be making their first appearance at the Tacoma Dome and all have a great shot to place.
We hope to fill the Tacoma Dome Tahoma Bear Fans this upcoming weekend. The tournament begins on Friday at 10:00a.m. If you would like more information on the tournament it can be found at www.wiaa.com
Tahoma Crowns 4 League Champs!
This past weekend the Tahoma Bears were able to crown four league champions. The Bears finished in 2nd place with 283.5 points. Our first champion of the night, Tyler Lamb walked through the 125 pound weight class pinning each of his opponents. This was Tyler’s first league championship and first tournament championship. Kevin Tao won his second league championship with a victory at 130 pounds. He was able to outlast Kent Meridians Aaron Smith with a 4-3 decision. Nick Bayer earned his title over a tough Kentwood opponent. His 4-2 victory over Lance Larsen, who took 3rd in 4A last year, was convincing. Our final champion was Konner Knudtsen who won the 189 pound weight class. This was Konner’s first league title. Over all 9 Bears will be moving on to this weekend’s regional tournament at Inglemoor High School. Ryan Goranson will be competing at 112 pounds, Jordan Higa will be in the 119 pound weight class, Christian Hayden will be competing at 130 pounds, JR Rea will be the 3 seed at 135 pounds, and Jesse Whition will represent the Bears in the 145 pound weight class.
