Big Katz U16 Team Make Matt Maupin Memorial Memorable
The U16 Big Katz swept through the SSG Matt Maupin Memorial Tournament with 6 victories to claim the tournament championship in Cincinnati, Ohio over the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend. The Maupin Tournament is held as a benefit to raise money for a scholarship fund in Matt Maupin's name, an American Soldier from Amelia, Ohio who was killed while fighting in Iraq. The money also goes to the Yellow Ribbon Foundation which provides packages for our soldiers in Iraq.
The Katz went 3-0 in their pool with victories over the Cincinnati Stix, Hamilton Bulldogs, and N. Kentucky Storm Club. In the quarter finals the Katz beat the Ohio Valley Timberwolves. The semi-finals and championship games were played at the beautiful Midland Baseball Stadium near Amelia, Ohio. The Big Katz took on the number two seeded Dayton Dodgers in the semi-finals and squeeked by with a 6-5 win. The championship game was rematch of last year's Maupin championship game with the Cincinnati Storm. The Katz leaped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings and hung on to claim the title with a 7-5 victory.
During the awards ceremony, regrets were provided from Matt Maupin's parents who were in Washington as guests of the President for Memorial Day. The players were reminded of the sacrifices our fallen soldiers have made to maintain the liberty we enjoy here at home. Tournament Director, Ms. Renee Gerber awarded our players with replicas of Matt Maupin's dog tags as a rememberance of Matt as a fallen hero.
College Katz Win First League Championship
The Columbus Big Katz Collegiate Woodbat Team captured their first league championship by shutting out the Columbus Hawks 8-0 in the championship game of the Tri-State College Woodbat League Tournament on Sunday, July 27. The Columbus Hawks and Katz tied for the top seed in the league tournament by tieing for first place in league play during the season. This set the scene for the two teams meeting in the championship game of the second annual single-elimination league tournament, played at Capital University's Clowson Field.
The Big Katz had to get by Zanesville and the Columbus Sharks-Black Team to get to the championship game. The Hawks had a bye in the first round and beat the Gahanna Rockets to get to the tournament final. The Big Katz take their 23-11 record to the AAABA Regional in Zanesville in hopes to qualify for a return trip to the AAABA World Series in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
