Here's a look at the four games.
Midgets
Division I
Charlotte 18, Riverdale 12: In the closest of the four games, the Warriors built an 18-0 lead via a tenacious defense and held off the southern division champions to win the championship. Charlotte is 9-1 and Riverdale finished at 9-1.
After Charlotte took an 18-0 lead on Clyde Newton's 25-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, Riverdale came back and scored twice to close the Warrior lead to a six-point margin.
Riverdale got the ball again and drove to the Charlotte 15 with less than two minutes left. But Charlotte's Zack Watson rushed in and sacked the Riverdale quarterback for a 20-yard loss. Two plays later, Charlotte got another sack and recovered the ball, clinching the victory.
“We just played great defense,” Charlotte coach Jerry Foster said. This was definitely our best defensive game. “They're (Riverdale) the best team we've played this season.”
Charlotte controlled the first half without scoring an offensive touchdown.
Doug Stroman recovered a fumble in the Riverdale end zone for a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Austin Taylor kicked the two-point conversion (kicks are work two points in Pop Warner) and Charlotte led 8-0.
Charlotte added a safety in the second quarter to gain a 10-0 halftime edge. Riverdale didn't get a sustained drive going until midway through the third quarter.
