Colts Finish Season, Yanez All-CIF
Secoral Yanez, Arieus Williams, Daniel Cedeno, Daniel Marmolejo, and Jordan Sherman all competed at CIF Finals in what turned out to be the finale to another championship season for the Colts. Yanez earned a 5th place medal in the 100 meters, adding her name to a long list of All-CIF track athletes in CHS history. We now look forward to seeing you all at the awards banquet this Wednesday.

Williams Breaks School Record, 5 Colts Advance to Finals
The season continues for Covina Track, as 5 athletes will compete at CIF Finals at MSAC on Saturday. Secoral Yanez won her heat in the 100 meters, and advanced to her first CIF Finals. Arieus Williams finally broke Robert Jarvis' school record in the 400, and positioned himself as one of the favorites in that event next week. Later, Williams led the 4x400 relay (Daniel Cedeno, Jordan Sherman, Daniel Marmolejo)to a strong performance, and a spot at Finals on Saturday. CIF Finals, which normally take place at Cerritos College, will be at MSAC this Saturday.

Covina Puts Stamp on Valle Vista League
At the Valle Vista League Finals on Thursday, Covina's boys and girls proved emphatically why they won team titles for the 7th and 4th year in a row. Several individual champions and CIF qualifiers highlighted the day, beginning with the 4x100 relay. The boys team of Jeff Lau, Jordan Sherman, Arieus Williams, and Remontay McClain took first place, as did the girls team of Erika Tornero, Payton Trollman, Chantel Diaz, and Secoral Yanez. The girls completed a two-year undefeated streak in that event. Trollman later led a girls sweep of the 100 hurdles, as she, Nikki Cooper, and Suzan Burmayan all qualified for CIF. Trollman also added a win in the 300 hurdles. Yanez will go to CIF in 4 events for the 3rd year in a row. She won the 100 in a personal best time of 12.33. Williams also had a spectacular day, winning the 400, 200, and leading the 4x400 team (pictured) to victory. Freshman McClain was stellar in the 100 and 200.
Coach Frogue's distance runners were outstanding, led by junior Marleny Cifuentes. She won the 1600 and the 3200 in dominating fashion. Teammate Briana Reyes was 2nd in the 1600, and freshman Stephanie Fuentes led the 800 nearly the entire way before finishing 3rd, smashing her personal best time. Daniel Cedeno won his 2nd straight title in the 800 and Kevin Medina came from behind to win the frosh-soph 1600.
The Colts were also solid on the field. Diaz won the shot-put for the 2nd straight year, and added a win in the discus. Jackie Ford is CIF-bound in the high jump and triple jump. Cooper qualified in the triple as well.Danny Montes won the triple jump and placed 2nd in the long jump. Chris Rosales will also go to CIF in high jump. And Scott Severin and Katie Perez made it a Colts sweep in pole vault, both winning their first league titles. CIF Prelims will take place at Warren High School in Downey. More info to come.

Northview Goes Down, Colts Complete Undefeated Season
Covina Track completed an undefeated dual meet season on Thursday, with boys and girls victories over visiting Northview. Both teams went 11-0 in pre-season and league meets in 2008. The boys won their 7th straight league title, while the girls won their 4th straight. Tyler Hopkins had a superb day for the boys, as did Daniel Cedeno and Arieus Williams. Defending league champion Williams has not lost a 400 race this season. Secoral Yanez stayed undefeated in the 100 and 200 for two straight years in league, and anchored the 4x100 relay to a second traight undefeated season. Nikki Cooper also completed two straight seasons without losing the 100 hurdles.
The boys frosh-soph level was a fierce battle, beginning with the 4x100. Remontay McClain brought the Colts from behind to win it at the tape, and came back later for two more key victories. With help from Chris Rosales, Kyle Chiu, and Jason Sherman, the Colts pulled away from the Vikings 78-58. League Prelims and Finals take place at Baldwin Park High School next Tuesday and Thursday

Cifuentes Breaks Record, Covina Rolls Through SGV...
The Colts made their presence felt at the last invitational of the season, the 3rd annual San Gabriel Valley Championships on Saturday. Distance runner Marleny Cifuentes and sprinter Secoral Yanez starred as the girls took home the runner-up trophy for the third year in a row. Ironically, the girls have finished second to a different team each year. This year it was powerful Division I Arcadia who outscored Covina. Cifuentes finally broke the long-standing school record in the 1600 meters, previously held by Monique Alaniz. Secoral Yanez was voted Sprinter of the Meet after bringing the 4x100 team from behind to win, and also winning the 100, 200, and anchoring the 4x400 to third place and a season- best time.
Arieus Williams also had a fine day, winning the 400, losing a photo finish in the 200, and leading the 4x400 to a big win. The boys placed 4th overall, as did the boys frosh-soph team. The girls frosh-soph team placed third. The Colts finish the regular season against Northview this Thursday.

Ganesha Swept by Covina
The Colts are one step away from another undefeated season after a boys/girls sweep of Ganesha Thursday. Ganesha's boys' team came into the meet undefeated, but thoughts of an upset were quickly put to rest as the boys 4x100 team of Jeff Lau, Jordan Sherman, Arieus Williams, and Remontay McClain started the meet with a dominating performance. The boys team has now won 34 league meets in a row. The girls won their 19th in a row, and like the boys, got things started with a resounding victory in the 4x100(Erika Tornero, Payton Trollman, Chantel Diaz, Secoral Yanez). The girls 4x100 has not lost in a dual or tri-meet since the 2006 season. Northview now stands in the way of a 7th straight league title for the boys and a 4th straight for the girls.

Williams Explodes at Arcadia!
Arieus Williams ran the race of his life on perhaps the biggest stage in the country, the Arcadia Invitational, this past Saturday. Running in lane 9 of his 400 heat, Williams left the field in the last 100 meters to run a personal best of 48.99. The senior crossed the finish line and walked off the track, stunned by his own performance. "I didn't even feel tired", said Williams. His performance puts him in excellent position to place well at the upcoming CIF Division III Prelims and Finals.
The girls 4x200 team of Payton Trollman, Nikki Cooper, Chantel Diaz, and Secoral Yanez also ran extremely well at Arcadia. Running in lane 9 as Williams did, the girls cut their entry time of 1:49 down to 1:46, good enough for 3rd place medals in their heat on Friday night. The Colts will continue the season this week against Ganesha, then compete at the San Gabriel Valley Championships on Saturday. The girls team has placed 2nd at this meet the last two years, and the meet has changed venue once again, taking place this year at West Covina High School.

Colts' Yanez up to speed

COVINA - It was near the end of her sophomore year when Covina High School's Secoral Yanez discovered what she was all about.

After winning the Valle Vista League 400-meter title as a freshman, Yanez returned in her sophomore year in the muscle events. She finished second in the league finals in the 100 and 200 and anchored the Colts to a second-place finish in the 400 relay and a third in the 1,600 relay.

"Losing devastated her," Covina girls track coach Erik Starkey said. "She had that taste of success as a freshman, then to not win anything as a sophomore bothered her to the point where she worked her butt off to not let that happen again."

All Yanez has done since is win every meet she has competed in with the exception of CIF. She has gone 18 consecutive non-CIF meets without losing a race.

She won the league title in the 100 and 200 as a junior and also anchored the 400 and 1,600 relay teams to first-place finishes as the Colts won their third consecutive girls team title.

Yanez's winning time of 26.42 in the 200 meters broke a school record that stood since 1980.

Now, midway through her senior year, Yanez has shown no signs of slowing down.

Her breakthrough performances came earlier this month at the Covina Invitational, where she beat Charter Oak's Sierra Brooks in the 100 and 200 with winning times of 12.63 seconds and 25.60, respectively, to earn athlete of the meet honors.

"I've always known that I've had a lot of speed," Yanez said. "I knew it when I played soccer or in other sports. The biggest part for me was learning how to develop that speed to get the most out of myself. "I still don't know how fast I'm capable of going, but I love working out more than ever just to see how fast I can get."

Yanez's great showing at the Covina Invitational earned her a spot in the Arcadia Invitational, which begins today and continues on Saturday with the marquee events.

Arcadia features not only the best performers in the state, but some of the best the country has to offer.

Yanez will compete during Saturday's day portion in 100 and 200 heats and also anchor the Colts' 400 and 1,600 relay teams in other heats.

If Yanez is fortunate, she might even show up later that night.

For the first time in Arcadia history, the highly regarded invitational portion on Saturday night will include top qualifiers from the day events. That should let Yanez know how far she's come and how much she needs to improve.

"I'd by lying if I didn't say Arcadia is a little intimidating, but I will run as fast as I can and see what happens," Yanez said. "Racing against girls I know are faster is going to push me. Hopefully I can run my best races ever there."

Starkey is curious because he said Yanez is a finisher, and racing from behind is one of her strengths.

"She has that extra gear," Starkey said. "She showed it at the Covina invite. She was behind in both races (100 and 200) and came from behind to win. I can't tell you how many times she's brought us back in relays when we thought we were done.

"I'm telling you, she's taking it to another level. She's more determined than she's ever been."

After Arcadia, Yanez can start thinking about finishing league in style and setting her goals for the CIF-Southern Section Division III meet.

Yanez never has qualified for a Division III final in any event, which means she's never been to the Masters Meet, either.

Yanez wants to do well in CIF and qualify for her first Masters Meet, and her marks in the 100 and 200 are close enough to give her a shot.

Yanez had the 18th-best overall time in the Division III 200 last year (25.90), and was 13th in the 100 (12.53).

"Her goal is to get to CIF finals, then take it from there," Starkey said. "She probably has a better chance in the 200 meters, but I wouldn't bet against her qualifying in both."

Yanez isn't just motivated by what she hears from her own coaches and teammates. She also hears it from her peers, which brings a genuine smile of satisfaction when she tells the story.

"There have been girls from other schools come up and say they look up to me," Yanez said. "I can't tell you how much that means. You're like, 'Wow, me, really?' It's so weird, but it's inspirational knowing that what I do might make someone else work harder."

Colts Topple Braves, Remain Undefeated
Covina Track remained undefeated in league competition after the boys and girls teams defeated Baldwin Park at their new facility on Thursday. The boys score was 87-31, and the girls score was 89-29. These scores include the pole vault which was contested on Saturday at Azusa Pacific. On the boys' side, sophomore Chris Rosales had a huge day, clearing a personal best of 5'10" in high jump, and nearly going 6 feet. Arieus Williams, Danny Montes, and Daniel Cedeno also contributed to the win. The girls distance runners, who have fiercely battled the Braves in cross country the last two seasons, had a superb day. Marleny Cifuentes, Briana Reyes, and freshman Rachel Falomir swept the 1600, and Cifuentes came back to win the 3200. Secoral Yanez and the girls 4x100 continued their dual/tri-meet winning streak, staying undefeated in '07 and '08. Spring practice will take place next week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 9:00. Be there.

Girls Team Captures Covina Invite, Secoral named Athlete of the Meet!
Covina Invite Results The Covina Invitational is now in the books, and once again, the host team did not go home empty handed. Secoral Yanez earned Athlete of the Meet after leading the girls 4x100 (Erika Tornero, Payton Trollman, Chantel Diaz) to another season best, and winning the 100 and 200. Yanez broke her own school record in the 200, lowering it to 25.60. Her efforts were the key to a very close win by the Covina girls in the team standings. The Colts won by 3 points over Temple City, and also avenged last week's loss to St. Lucy's at the Chino Relays(St. Lucy's was 3rd here). Other key contributors to the win were Jackie Ford and Nicole Cooper. Trollman and Diaz scored important points in their individual events.
The boys frosh-soph team placed 2nd overall, thanks to sprinter Remontay McClain, who continued his outstanding season. Helping bring home the trophy were Kegan and Jason Sherman, Kyle Chiu, and Scott Severin. The Colts will try to stay undefeated in league this week against Baldwin Park.

Colts 2-0 In League!
The Covina boys and girls teams overcame a stiff challenge from an improved San Dimas program to remain undefeated in league. The boys score was 84-49, and the girls came out on top 84-56. The usual suspects, namely Arieus Williams, Jordan Sherman, Daniel Cedeno, and Danny Montes, led the Colts to victory. Also, freshman Remontay McClain anchored the 4x100 to a thrilling victory at the tape. The girls faced their biggest challenge since the '05 and '06 duels with Ganesha. It was Secoral Yanez who made it happen for the Colts, as she brought the 4x100 from behind to nip San Dimas at the tape, and later scored two close victories in the 100 and 200. Helping the girls effort were Payton Trollman, who had a personal best in the 300 hurdles, and Chantel Diaz, who had a personal best in shotput. On to the Covina Invitational!

Boys Win Chino Relays!
Covina competed at the Chino Relays at Chino High School on Saturday. The Colts did not get the chance to defend their Division 3 titles from a year ago, as they were moved up to Division 2 this year. However, the boys still found a way to win, tying with Damien for 1st in Division 2 with 109 points apiece. The tough competition brought out some outstanding performances. Remontay McClain was very solid for the boys, and Chantel Diaz starred for the girls. Freshman Remontay, recently promoted to varsity, continued to shine on relays all day for the boys' team. Chantel led the throwers to divisional wins in the shot and disc, and also helped the 4x100 to a seasonal best and Arcadia qualifying time of 51.16. The girls 4x200 team of Diaz, Nicole Cooper, Payton Trollman and Secoral Yanez also qualified for Arcadia. You all know what's ahead this Saturday-the Covina Invitational! Before looking ahead to Saturday, however, the Colts must tackle San Dimas on Thursday to keep the boys' and girls' league winning streaks alive. All athletes will compete in both meets. Please let Coach Glaspy or Coach Starkey know if you will be available to help this Saturday at APU.

Pomona Visits Covina
Covina opened league competition with a resounding boys/girls sweep of visiting Pomona. Freshman Remontay McClain, running in his first varsity meet, won two races for the Colts, and Danny Montes and Jordan Sherman both won very close races in the hurdles. Also, Scott Severin, Anthony Vega and Brandon Mannino swept the pole vault. The girls 4x100 has not lost a race in a dual or tri-meet since the 2006 season. Erika Tornero, Payton Trollman, Chantel Diaz, and Secoral Yanez made sure that streak kept going.During that same stretch, Yanez has not lost in the 100 or 200 meters. Marleny Cifuentes, Briana Reyes, Nancy Contreras, Rachel Falomir, Melissa Spolar and Stephanie Fuentes swept the distance events. Also contributing to the victory was Daniela Martinez who had a personal best in pole vault. The Colts now prepare to defend their titles at Chino Relays on Saturday.

C-Town Surfs Through Long Beach Relays
Covina boys and girls track remained undefeated after sweeping the small school titles at the Long Beach Relays on Saturday. The boys frosh-soph team, led by star newcomers Kyle Chiu(pictured) and Remontay McClain, brought home a second place trophy, missing the top spot by one point. The boys varsity team was in a tough duel with St. John Bosco all day. Bosco was dominant in the distance events, but the Colts countered with a balanced attack, and pulled away once the field event results were tallied. The girls team was never challenged as they also brought balance, and won this meet for the second straight year.
The boys' top point scorers were Jeff Lau, Jordan Sherman and Arieus Williams in the relays and Danny Montes in hurdles and jumps, while the girls were led by Secoral Yanez, Jackie Ford, Chantel Diaz, and a big contribution from the distance runners, led by Marleny Cifuentes. Also, Ford and Kameron Wicks leaped to personal bests in triple jump. Next, the Colts begin their Valle Vista League title defense against Pomona on Wednesday, then travel to Chino High School for the Chino Relays on Saturday. Remember, this meet has now moved from Citrus College to Chino High, and the team will also be looking to repeat as girls' team and sweepstakes team champion.

Colts Sweep Rivals Northview and South Hills
In a classic pre-season match-up for district bragging rights, Covina's boys and girls teams came out on top in a tri-meet vs. Norhtview and South Hills at Azusa Pacific. The boys' score was Covina 100 South Hills 65 and Northview 26. The girls score was Covina 85 South Hills 62 and Northview 20. Both Covina teams remain undefeated.
The boys were led again by Arieus Williams who won the 400 and 200. Daniel Cedeno was dominant in the distance races. Jordan Sherman helped the Colts in the hurdles, and Danny Montes once again was scoring points everywhere.
Secoral Yanez started the meet with a stirring comeback win in the girls 4x100, and that team which included Erika Tornero, Payton Trollman and Chantel Diaz ran a seasonal best. Yanez won three more races on the day. Trollman and Diaz also scored big points later, as did Nikki Cooper. Jackie Ford was stellar in all of her events, including a personal best in high jump. Saturday, the Colts travel to Long Beach to compete in the Long Beach Relays.

Covina Soars Past Bonita & Gabrielino
The boys and girls teams remained undefeated after a sweep of Bonita and Gabrielino on Thursday. Gabrielino, though a very small team, made their presence felt on both sides, and Bonita gave the girls everything they could handle. The girls earned a dramatic 74-64-32 victory, and the boys score was 89-61-19.
Chantel Diaz was a major key to the girls' victory. Added to the 4x100 days ago, she helped the relay to a win, and later led a 1-2-3 sweep of the shot-put (Janessa Espinoza and Jessica DeLaCruz) which sealed the team's victory. Secoral Yanez still has not lost in dual/tri-meets in the 4x100, 100, or 200 since the 2006 season. Amazing. Jackie Ford, Nikki Cooper, Kameron Wicks and a hobbled Suzan Burmayan scored important points in the field events. In a meet where every point counted, distance runners Marleny Cifuentes and Briana Reyes were also huge, as was pole vaulter Daniela Martinez (pictured).
The boys were also in a tough battle, but were able to pull away comfortably as the lights at Bonita came on. Jordan Sherman and Arieus Williams won 4 events apiece, spurring the boys effort. Distance runner Daniel Cedeno won three times, including a solid leg on the 4x400. And sophomore Chris Rosales found himself in an exciting duel in the high jump. He scored 3 important points for the Colts. Another young Colt, Scott Severin, had a big win in pole vault. Next up for the Colts are rivals Northview and South Hills on Thursday.
