And thats a Wrap. C&S Ends Season.
August 4, 2008 As of today (August 4th 2008) the C&S Protactor season has officially come to an end. With several conflicts looming over the next few weeks the front office has decided with some player input to give everyone an early start to the off-season.

By phone interview manager Steve Schraufnagel said "This was by far the most fun I have had with this team. The team chemistry was great all year, it was a real pleasure being a part of this team." Well said from the crafty veteran first baseman who by the way can serve the ball from anywhere on the baseline on the tennis court. This years team although did not finish with a strong record may have been the most well balanced and consistent Protractor team to date. C&S finished with a 2-10 record but 8 of the 10 losses were by 2 runs or less (6 by one run).

C&S got great pitching from ace John "Soap Dish" Sopiwnik as well as newcomer Garret Englehard. Cody Schmock also put in some solid innings to round out the staff. Ben "Cabbage" Hatinger although highly touted was not able to notch any mound time in a game situation.

Another bright spot to the team was having 2 players in the top 10 in hitting for the Upper 13. Jacob "Dr. J" Schraufnagel ended up leading the league with an average over .400. The power hitting firstbasemen and St. Thomas alumnus consistently put up a couple hits per game. Also newcomer rookie center fielder Brett "Step Ladder" Beeksma provided some pop at the top of the order and some wheels on the base baths leading the team in stolen bases.

Thomas L.M. Schraufnagel seemed to have a break out season at the plate coming up with some clutch hits. Newcomers Blake Elleson and Brian Trettin added much needed depth and defense to the lineup. As always brothers Matt and Marcus Hulmer were solid two way players. Scott "Huck" Morland, Nils "16D" Fetter, and Ben "Cabbage" Hatinger rounded out the team with their hard work, contact hitting, and mostly clean uniforms.

Next season there may be a few moves in the front office as Trevor "Hoover" Provost looks to step up to the GM position and lobby for more single games. He predicts gas prices to be down and more eco friendly vehicles to allow the Protractors to make a few more single games on the road instead of DH's.

Coach Schraufnagel said by phone interview that he looks forward to making a few more tee times during the fall and invites all players to join himself and J.O. for a round of golf and a few clever jokes.

Thanks again to everyone for making this a very enjoyable season, and good luck to the Upper 13 teams in WBA playoff action. Next year will be the 10 year mark for C&S baseball, an alumni reunion is planned for all current/former players that made it possible for us to be able to play ball to this date.

Big Schrauf taks Upper 13 Batting Title. Beeksma cracks top 10 in rookie campaign.
August 3, 2008 Jake Schraufnagel had a heck of a season for C&S. Jake hit over .400 to lead the Upper 13 in batting average. Although also known for his power, Schraufnagel showed he can also hit for average once again. This is Schraufnagels first Upper 13 batting title following in the footsteps of his legendary father Steve. Steve notes that his average when he led the Upper 13 was slighly higher than Jakes. Also noted is coach has 2 Thursday night BP titles while the younger Schraufnagel has Zero. Brett "Step Ladder" Beeksma also cracked the top 10 in his rookie campaign. The centerfielder from Ashland, WI played a steady center while bringing a lot of speed to the top of the order.

Congratulations to both Jake and Brett

    Exeland game gets rained out.
August 3, 2008 Although looking promising, C&S was stopped on Sunday, but only by the weather. In the first two innings C&S put runners in scoring position and appeared poised to put a crooked number on the board, mother nature intervened and put on a light show. Scotty "Huck" actually hit a train (while moving) and Mike Fetter took a short break from his bike trip across the United States, to take in a baseball game. John Sopiwnik tossed 1 hit for the rain shortened game.

C&S will game up with a decision to play in the Solon Springs tournament based on commitments from key players. Otherwise this marks the end of the 2008 season finishing with a record of 2-10.

    C&S Steams Boilers
July 21, 2008 On Sunday C&S was able to build an early lead and finish strong to take down the Port Wing Boilers 12-2 in a 7 inning ball game. C&S was paced by some hot bats and a good eye at the plate to have base runners constantly on base and in scoring position. Coach Trevor Provost was an inspiring sight for the players as he witnessed his first victory of the season. When interviewed after the game Provost was elated "I knew it was Suga and not me that was the bad luck charm, I am coming out of retirement" (See more on Provosts Favre-like comeback in this weeks article). A strong mound performance was given by John Sopiwnik, giving up only 5 hits with 9 K's. The win puts C&S at 2-10 on the season. However, fans are not giving up on the team yet. They have watched game losses decided by 2 runs or less and are hopeful to still see things turn around in the final weeks of the season. With a few prospective exhibition games on the schedule, C&S will for sure be in Exeland for fan appreciation day on August 3.

    C&S Drains Boilers
June 22, 2008 C&S Protractors put together 9 innings of solid baseball to pick up a road win against the Port Wing Boilers. Scoring runs from the bottom of the order and playing error-less baseball were the key components for C&S (1-5). Brett Beeksma led the C&S attack with 3 hits, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI's, including an RBI double in the early innings which put C&S ahead for good. When reached by phone for an interview C&S assistant coach Trevor Provost said "I knew we were due for a win, I like baseball, and I like wins." Provost also mentioned he has had great luck choking up in practice, and is ready if needed for a pinch hit. Furthermore he went on about his ability to pinch run without stretching, he is always ready and looks to see action in the Teachers in the Bleachers III this coming Thursday. C&S got 9 strong innings from Pitcher John Sopiwnik who went the distance not allowing a runner past 2nd base. Also coming back out of retirement was John's brother Blaise. C&S next takes on Oulu in a double header Thursday night which is the Teachers in the Bleachers game.

    C&S Goes GREEN!
May 25, 2008 To play our part to combat the thread of global warming C&S Design Protractors have gone green. By adding double headers to away games not only saves a trip for one of the teams involved but by doing this in the twin ports areas cuts the drive down for players coming from the cities. Also the car pooling of some Ashland players reduces the amount of vehicles traveling to the games. This idea of possibly being the first baseball team to go GREEN was conjured up by Coach. He said he had been doing things the same way for many years in the Upper 13 but as time went on he felt a calling to help combat global warming. Sure this may mean a few less home games for our team but we think the environmental impact of our sacrifice will have benefits for generations to come. Although coach has been rethinking the normal way of doing things dont think for a moment that he is having second thoughts on choking up! Each player took no less than a dozen swings in practice this week with a minimum of a 6 inch choke.
