Coach Bryan Murphy Jr. began wrestling at age 7 for the Villa Lombard Cougars Wrestling Club at Glenbard West High School until the 6th grade when his father Bryan Murphy Sr. founded the Villa Park Young Warriors. As a Young Warrior, he became a team captain, went to the State Tournament 3X, and placed 6th in the senior division at 115lbs.
He continued his career at Willowbrook HS during the 1994-98 seasons. While there he broke the all-time wins record, was a 2x State Qualifier, placed 3rd in Freestyle and Greco State, and qualified for Nationals in Fargo in both styles.
Upon graduating high school, Bryan attended the United States Naval Academy. As a Midshipman, he was a four year varsity wrestler at 149lbs/157lbs. In 2004, he also made the All-Navy wrestling team in Pensacola, FL.
In 2002, Bryan was commissioned as a Naval Officer. He was designated as a Surface Warfare Officer and subsequently lead sailors on board multiple ships in the Operations department. After deploying to South America for a Counter-Narcotics Mission and the Northern Arabian Gulf for the War on Terror, he transitioned to the U.S. Naval Reserves where he continues to serve at Great Lakes Naval Station.
Bryan was a coach for the Young Warriors in high school, and rejoined the staff in 2007 when he moved back home to Villa Park. In addition to coaching the Young Warriors, he also works closely with Willowbrook’s HS team. His coaching philosophy is quite simple: Be positive, be productive, and have fun.
