U5 Recreation Information
OVERVIEW OF U5

U5 consists of only 4-year-old children. This division serves as an introduction to soccer. The only thing that is important at this age is that the children are having FUN, FUN & MORE FUN!

Any feedback you give to the children MUST BE POSITIVE! At this age there should never be shouting, there should never be negative comments, and there should definitely not be any technical coaching involved. As the season progresses you will see an incredible transformation and they will quickly learn co-operative skills such as communication and trust, while at the same time developing positive social interaction skills and teamwork. They will begin to learn to share, to empathize with others and get along with one another.

As a coach at this age, a requirement is that you can act as a “clown”; most of the games at this age involve dancing, singing, and performing animal noises. These elements are most important as it ensures the children are HAVING FUN. Coaching this age requires an incredible amount of patience, as the children will not instantly do as you say, and they may require you to explain things more than once. Try and think back to when you were this age, were you the best-behaved child and did everything you were told? Exactly.

Children at this age enjoy lots and lots of variety. However, once the children find a game they like and enjoy, they will ask you to play this game over and over again. Obviously it is good to play the game many times for repetition, but we must ensure we are introducing new learning experiences as well.

This age group is a great age to coach, as you will see the children having an amazing time and learning without realizing. At this age, we are concerned with developing young children not technical soccer players. Remember the key to this level is FUN, FUN, and MORE FUN!
