League Directors: Mara Marinelli & Ed Carmon
(as of 1st April 2013) Spring 2013 Rules are not yet available.
Some of the following rules may not be consistent with those in the "Rules" file that is in the "Hand-Outs" menu of the MBL website because that file does not include changes for the Spring 2012 season.
Moreover, HBL and MBL rules are not 100% identical, so games will be played under different rules depending upon who is the "home" team!
Spring 2012 Rule Summary (as of 1st April 2012):
- Head-first sliding while attempting to advance to any base is prohibited and will result in an automatic out on the first offense and an ejection on the second offense.
- Head-first sliding while returning to a base is permitted.
- If head-first sliding while advancing is allowed by non-MBL teams, their players may do so without penalty.
A pitcher may throw a maximum of seven (7) innings in a week, defined as Monday through Sunday. One (1) pitch thrown in an inning constitutes one (1) inning pitched. A pitcher who pitches more than two (2) innings in one (1) game can not pitch during the next two (2) calendar days.
No "Player Rotation" Rule exists, BUT... MBL strongly encourages that every player play at least one full inning in the IF and one full inning in the OF during the first 4 innings of each game (teams with more than 12 players in attendance have 5 innings).
- An exception exists for a starting pitcher (not a 1st-inning relief pitcher) who continues to pitch beyond the applicable inning; however, once removed, that player must play OF the first inning back on the field (the player may first sit out one inning).
- Non-MBL teams may follow different rotation rules, or none at all, without penalty.
A regulation game consists of seven (7) innings.
- If a game is called due to inclement weather or other conditions deemed unsafe by the umpire, the game is "official" upon completion of 4½ innings if the home team is in the lead, or 5 innings if the visiting team is in the lead or if the game is tied (if the latter, the game will be recorded as a tie).
- Games called because of the Time Limit are considered "official" regardless of the number of innings played (see Time Limits).
- All play-off games must go a minimum of 7 innings.
Time Limits are usually applied with respect to the "scheduled" start time, but if a game is delayed by weather or field conditions, then the limits are applied to the "actual" start time.
- No inning can begin after 2:00, and the game must stop after 2:15.
- Delay tactics and hurry-up tactics (e.g., "intentional outs") are considered "unsportsmanlike" and will not be tolerated.
- There are NO Time Limits in the play-offs.
"Mercy" Rule: Regular season games will end in any inning after a team as batted five (5) times if that team is trailing by at least 12 runs. Umpires may immediately end the game regardless of how much time is still available. In the play-offs, the "Mercy" rule will NOT be used between MBL teams, but may be used when playing non-MBL teams (it will depend upon what the leagues agree to beforehand).
Balks: During the regular season, each pitcher is allowed one warning per game before a balk will be called; however, no warnings will be issued in the play-offs.
Both teams (not just the home team) are responsible for raking and lining the field after games. The exception is after the final game on the day immediately preceding scheduled maintenance by the paid field maintenance contractor. NOTE: in Spring 2012, the field need not be raked/lined after the last game/practice on Sunday and Thursday.
ALL OTHER RULES AND GUIDELINES IN THE MBL "RULE BOOK" ARE APPLICABLE.
