3/11/08 This wing class was by far the deepest of the weekend and left our staff scratching their heads when trying to identify the top because it was difficult to figure out where to draw the line. We’ll start with Shannon Cranshaw who we saw alongside Alexis Brown this year playing JV basketball for Lake Highland Prep. Shannon was one of the most skilled players at the camp and to be only in 7th grade her basketball IQ was off the charts. She has signs of some of the good players we have seen come through Central Florida and we are eager to see her develop over the next few years. One player we had not seen who is destined to be a St. Augustine Jacket is Ajanai Edwards. She is an unbelievable athlete. We had problems identifying a true position because of her versatility to play the wing as well as inside. Over and over she was able to make plays this weekend that made you say wow! We expect her to be someone to make some noise in North Florida for some years to come. Edward’s was a key to her team’s success this weekend in 5 on 5 with her rebounding and defensive efforts. Someone we are familiar with from our other events and were excited to have back is 7th grade sensation Sydnei McCaskill of Chain of Lakes. While its hard to expect much more from Sydnei, we were really impressed with her improved court vision, finishing ability, and overall shooting touch. We can tell her move to the Edge is doing wonders for her game already and their season has just begun. January Miller , an 8th grader from Corner Lake, showed up for the end of 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 after playing in a tournament at Winning Ways and instantly made an impact. She took the 4th seeded 3 on 3 team to the championship game and lost by 1 and helped her 5 on 5 team to a 20 point win in their championship. January’s skill set is extremely developed and her pure athleticism was unrivaled at camp.  Look for her to begin to make a name for herself next year at the high school level.  Katherine Ortolani was our overall 1 on 1 champion by scoring inside and out. Katherine seems to be one of the players that have a high school ready game because of her strength and ability to shoot the deep ball. We expect for her to be a solid piece of a good high school program next year in Daytona Beach.  Vyanna Prince was another player we had not seen before this weekend but she definitely impressed us. Prince can handle the ball, finish in traffic, play defense, and has excellent range. Prince got our attention first with her ability to finish with both hands as well as a monster block during the 5 on 5, which shook the entire gym. Prince’s strong frame makes her a terror to defend. Look for Vyanna to be a solid lead guard in the class of 2012. Morgan Robinson was arguably the best overall player at the camp with her ability to score in so many different ways. She led her 3-on-3 team to the championship by scoring 9 of their 11 points including the winning 3pt with 14 secs left. We were impressed with her ability to make everyone around her look better and always looking to make the smart play. We talk about basketball IQ a lot when watching these players and Morgan’s was off the charts. She just always seemed to make the best play for each situation and just knows how to win. Look for Robinson to be a heavy contributor on the high school scene next year where she will be keyed on by nearly every opponent.  When you talk about winners you have to talk about Sha’la Shervington who has not lost a middle school basketball game in 2 years at Piedmont Lakes which is the pinnacle of middle school basketball in Orange County. Although quiet most of the day, Sha’la’s game spoke for itself as she was able score in a variety of different ways during both the 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 competitions. Sha’la is a very good ball handler which made us think about putting her as a point guard but we decided to call her a wing, because of how much of a threat she was from every spot on the perimeter. In this group also we can’t forget to mention Victoria Grant who was one of  2 6th graders invited to the camp. No one really said anything because it seemed like she fit in with the rest of the talented field this weekend. For Grant who already is 5’8’’, she was one of the top shooters in the camp all weekend. Her ability to feel comfortable in this setting will take her a long way in the future and we look forward to her development.
