***The info below lists the nine most commonly used exercises of lifts that can create problems for your throwing arm. It's not an all-inclusive list but these are the ones Coach Lutz sees being misused most often.
RESISTANCE EXERCISES BASEBALL PLAYERS MUST AVOID:
Behind the neck pulldown--DO: Pulldown to chest
Behind the neck press--DO: Press from chest
Incline bench press--DO: Flat bench press
Lateral raise--DO: Thumbs up lateral raise
Front raise--DO: Thumbs up front raise
Lateral raise machine--DO:Thumbs up lateral raise
Chest fly--AVOID
Pullover--AVOID
Upright Row--AVOID
DO NOT perform the machine bench press or bench press using a Smith machine, because these devices force the shoulder to travel in a linear (and unnatural) pathway. Perform the bench press on a flat bench with either dumbbells or a barbell using a full range of motion.
Follow these guidelines to safely strengthen and condition your throwing arm!
