Homecoming is here and for some of our 8th grade players and parents their final regular season game on our home field. I would like to hear some good stories about the 8th graders who are playing their final game. I know a lot of these kids, and they not only have been successful on the field but they have helped build new traditions and carry on old ones. There has to be some good stories to share about each of them so let’s hear it.

Tommy Sciara played on the 3rd/4th grade team when in 2nd grade. He didn't get on the field much on Saturdays. He spent most of his time near the trash can behind the bench killing bees with his bare hands. During one game he bragged that he had only been stung four times that day.

Luke "Biggie" Small..this is his 6th year playing for the Necco Raiders! He told us that during the Simone tourney he told his coach, "Coach, I LOVE football and mostly I love the Simone Tournement!" Football has been an important tool in teaching him the things in life that are REALLY important..Kudos to ALL his coaches, for giving the "Small" kid a chance of a lifetime! Might as Well...! Oh, and thanks to Andy Dorothy for re-naming Luke to "Biggie" 6 years ago. After one of Coach Joe's hard practices a few years back, Biggie asked his dad, " Hey Dad, remind me why are we doing this again?...." Now that we are at the end, we all know why....being a Raider is a badge worn proudly! Thanks Simone family, also, for your vision and endless hours dedicated to our boys.

Over the last 6 years it has been a privilege to be a part of the Necco Raider family. We have learned many lessons about teamwork, been a part of many victories and championships, and always strived to uphold the proud Raider tradition.

There are many stories that come to mind as we think back, but one stretch of time in 2005 taught us a great deal about the Raider family, our son, and life.

As a 76 pound 4th grader, Brady was thrilled to be on the field, much less being involved in what was to be the winning play against an outstanding Longhorns team in September of '05. Coach Joe set the play action pass up perfectly, Brock threw a nice spiral to Brady in the endzone, and with 2 seconds to go on the clock, things were looking pretty bright. Then, it happened. The ball hit Brady in the facemask and dropped harmlessly to the ground incomplete game over we lost for the first time in 22 games.

Brady was devastated, he knew he let the team down, as well as himself, and he was inconsolable. He knew it wasn't the end of the world, but it felt pretty close. Coaches and players were instrumental in our efforts to pick him back up during our bye week that followed. Coach Joe even said "if I had it to do all over again, I'd make the same decision", and that meant the world to Brady.

The next Saturday, when we would normally be playing, Brady's Granddad passed away. As our family mourned the loss of Choo Choo (his nickname for the vast collection of model trains he owned), the events of the previous weekend came into sharp perspective for Brady.

He said to me, "Dad, last week hurt real bad, but this is worse because I can't talk to Choo Choo again. I think I'm gonna ask him to help me catch passes now". I told him that I had no doubt his Granddad would do just that.

Needless to say, our team worked to improve the rest of the season, and when we met the Longhorns in the playoffs, it was an oustanding game. After Colin O'leary's safety solidified our win, we had a blast high fiving and hugging each other, knowing we had earned a chance to play in the Super Bowl.

The fact that a train rolled slowly by the field as our victory celebration went on was mostly unnoticed, but it meant a great deal to us.

Thanks for the memories Simone Family, Sciortino Family, players and coaches that have worked with Brady. It has truly been a blessing for our family.
