Freedom Nearly Nips Buckingham For Division Title, Finishes Second By One Point

|
Three Freedom Players Moving On To Play College Soccer
Three Freedom players have accepted offers to play for college this coming fall. Jen and Kim Steinke will be attending Immaculata University and playing for Coach Tacconelli's Mighty Macs. Lauren Duffy is playing for Elizabethtown College as a keeper. Training camp opens in mid-August and the girls are looking forward to getting started. Good luck to all three girls as they make the step up to play at the collegiate level!
Central Continues Championship Run With 1 - 0 Win Over Franklintowne Charter
Central continued their domination over the Public League by registering an undefeated P.L. season including a 1 - 0 win over Franklintowne Charter in the championship game. Congratulations to Freedom players Kelly Wadlinger and Laura Turner for their contribution to the Lancer's success!
Four Freedom Players Selected To 2008 All Public Team
FIVE Fox Chase Freedom players received All-Public for their play during the 2008 season. Jen and Kim Steinke, and Nicole Bracciale received first team honors. Kelly Wadlinger was selected to the second team, and Jess Shotwell was recognized as Honorable Mention. Congratulations to all our players for their season of hard work and accomplishment!
90 Seconds From League Title...
The shot by Buckingham with 90 seconds to play in the second game that somehow found it's way barely inside the right post had more meaning than any realized at the time. Yes, it meant that the Buckingham team who had overwhelmed the Freedom in game one 6 - 1 would escape Philadelphia relieved to have scored the tying goal after having been outplayed for 88 minutes of the second game. Yes, it meant that a win would be a more satisfying measure of redemption against the girls in blue and white rather than a last minute tie. Who could have guessed that the undefeated team from Buckingham would struggle for a tie against Springfield in the final game of their season? By virtue of just one point, the Freedom nearly caught and passed Buckingham for the Intercounty U17F Division 1 Title. Our hats are off to you Freedom for the outstanding season you had. Congratulations and best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season!

Celebrate Seven Seasons!
Seven years together represents an impressive accomplishment. When we put the team together you were 12 years old and entering 6th grade! Our soccer skills have grown both individually and as a team. Congratulations on seven incredible years!

MS Challenge Walk
Freedom Chalks The Walk, Cheers The Walkers At 2007 MS Challenge Walk
The Freedom put on their community service hats on Saturday and volunteered at the 2007 MS Challenge Walk at A.I. Dupont High School in Delaware. 10 girls participated by decorating the entry way to the parking lot with colorful sidewalk chalk welcome messages and words of encouragement to the 250 walkers. As the walkers entered the parking lot, the Freedom players picked up pom-poms and cheered them on! Lunch followed and after a little clean-up, we were "outa there!" The girls all seemed to have a good time in support of a worthwhile cause. Way to go, Freedom players! Thanks for your support for the fight to cure Muliple Sclerosis!
Freedom Beaten By Buckingham In Intercounty Opener, 6 - 1
The Freedom explored the superlatives of the season as they traveled to the farthest game, played in the hottest (hopefully) weather, and lost by the most lopsided of scores, 6 - 1. Buckingham opened their scoring with a perfectly placed corner kick over the head of Freedom keeper Jess Shotwell and into the left upper corner of the net. 'A perfectly placed corner', Coach Steinke murmured afterwards. Despite having a full complement of officials including two side judges, an obvious offsides run by Buckingham resulted in another score. After a nightmarish first half (5 - 0, Buckingham), the Freedom settled in and scored on a perfect feed by Blaise Sargent-Boone upfield to Jen Steinke, who then made the run to the net and finished with a shot to the upper left corner. The only Buckingham goal in the second half came as a result of a near-perfect shot just under the crossbar from the 20. The Freedom will look for their first win of 2007 at home this coming Sunday vs. A.C. United on the upper field.
White Wins Thursday Events, Red Wins 2007 Freedom Survivor Title
White won the day's events on Thursday with a total of 1060 points, however, it wasn't enough to overcome the lead Red built over the first two days of "Freedom Survivor". Winning the 2007 Freedom Survivor title is the Red Team comprised of team members Kelly, Kim, Dana, Sam and Lauren. The White Team, Jen, Lisa, KJ, Kara and Lani, battled back on the last day winning a number of individual and team events, but the lead Red amassed proved too to be too much. "The Freedom Survivor competition is a friendly and competitive event pitting teammates against one another as they perform various soccer related tasks both individually and as a team," Coach Steinke remarked. "It really is a ton of fun, and the players have a tendency to really get into it." Nice job, Freedom!
Coach Opens Camp With Theme, "Better and Faster"
The Freedom opened their seventh season with their annual pre-season training camp at Fox Chase. Nine players listened as Coach Steinke spoke about the upcoming season including individual and team expectations. "Better and faster is how players at the U17 level need to play," he said. "We will be concentrating on doing all the fundamental things, however, emphasis will be placed on doing them better and at an increased speed." Sam, Jen, Kim, Kelly, Kara, Lani, KJ, Dana and Lisa all started their physical conditioning in hot and humid weather.
Fox Chase Players Attend LaSalle University Soccer Camp
U17 Freedom players Maureen Hawkins, Jen Steinke and Kim Steinke joined U18 Little Foxes players Rachel Hopkins and Zena Tracey at the 2007 College Prep and Goalkeeper Soccer Camp at LaSalle University. The camp is a five day event running from Saturday through Wednesday attracting high school players from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, and from club teams including FC Delco and FC Bucks. LaSalle's women's soccer coach, Paul Royal, coordinates the camp with coaches from LaSalle, guest coaches from other colleges and universities, and LaSalle women players. Good luck to the Fox Chase players as they look to ramp up their skills with some of the best female talent in the area!
Freedom Wears Cohox Down and Nets 2 Goals To Win, 2 - 1 In League Final
From the inside of the Rec Director's office, one couldn't tell who the third eruption of noise and celebration was for, Cohox or the Freedom. Mr. Duffy appeared at the door of the "holding cell" with a smile on his face, and I then knew the Freedom had come through. News of our first goal came in a similar way, through Mr. Duffy, and the particulars were called in via cell phone by Katie Benek. "Mo headed the ball past their keeper for a goal!", she told me. As my watch counted down I nearly exploded with anticipation wondering what was happening, and then...YEEAAAHHH, the eruption shook the walls. The messenger man, Mr. Duffy, delivered the fabulous news and we had prevailed. Freedom, you are special. You came through as a team again and we are all very proud of you. Fox Chase Freedom...ROCKS!!!
Freedom Players Recognized By Club At Banquet
Eight Freedom players were recognized for their playing with Fox Chase Soccer from the in-house league up to this year's U16 team. The Nick Palino Award was presented to players from the boys' and girls' U16 teams who have played in-house through U16 AND who have contributed their time and talent back to the Fox Chase Soccer Club in the way of volunteering their time. The Chuck O'Connor Graduation Award was presented to players who have been with the club from home league through U16. The Joseph DeRita Memorial Award was presented to one boy and one girl who have demonstrated the qualities of sportmanship and dedication to the Fox Chase Soccer Club. Receiving the Nick Palino and Chuck O'Connor Memorial Award were Katie Benek, Maureen Hawkins, Lani McCrossin, Blaise Sargent-Boone, Jen Steinke, Kim Steinke, Kelly Wadlinger and Samantha Walter. Jess Shotwell was been selected to receive the Joseph DeRita Memorial Award. Congratulations to our players!
Parents Are 'Preciated
During the discussion concerning the reasons for the outstanding accomplishment of winning the championship of a very good soccer league, the point was made that the players received support from you, their parents. You get the credit for transporting them, feeding them and encouraging them to get their rest. These factors are all a part of the mix necessary to perform at a high level on the soccer field. Therefore, parents, please accept the thanks of your soccer player and the coaches for your time and support this past season.
We couldn't have done it without you!

Conditioning Is The Key
Freedom players can help themselves by starting to condition on their own for the upcoming season. Start by stretching (as always) followed by a 20 - 30 minute period of cardiovascular activity. This can be jogging, walking on a treadmill or any variation of these two. Be careful not to "overdo it" in the beginning stages. Also watch the outside temperature. Do not work out if the temperature is above 90 degrees as this can lead to heat related problems. Remember, in soccer, conditioning is key!
