Spring Season Game Summaries
Lions finish Spring season 6 wins - 1 loss - 1 tie
The Lions had a truly outstanding Spring season finishing in second place in our ODSL Division!! Every player on the Lions improved dramatically. This season, the Lions proved they could play with heart and determination in each and every game. We also had to overcome significant injuries as Diana, Gina and Cara missed games due to broken arms. In three games we played with less than 2 substitutions. Our only loss of the season was a 1-0 loss to a very good BRYC team when we had players missing and the lone goal just squeaked over the goal line. The Lions best game of the season was a 3-1 victory over the eventual 1st place PWSI Courage. The Lions also had an excellent match against the ARL Rowdies as the Lions came back from a two goal defecit to tie the match. Overall the spring season was a huge team success as the team really matured playing more possession soccer and playing with greater passion and intensity. We are very proud of every player on the team as we make preparations in the off season to get ready to move up to the first division in U-11. Great Season Lions!!!

FPYC Lions 3 goals vs CYA Black Lighting 1 goal
On the final match of the Spring Season the Lions hosted the CYA Black Lighting on a scorching hot day on the All-Weather Turf field at Patriot Park. At game time, the temperature was near 90 degrees and the turf made it feel closer to 100!! The game started out a little slow as both teams tried to adjust to the heat. The Black Lighting were having success moving into Lions territory as the defense seemed a little sluggish. At the 20 minute mark in the first half the Black Lighting took advantage of a defensive miscue and scored the first goal of the game. The Lions moved the ball with some limited success at the midfield but the half ended with very little offensive activity by the Lions. At halftime, the team spoke about the need to pick up intensity and be the first to the ball. From the outset of the second half, the Lions were a different team. We started moving the ball with precision and Ayda and Maria did an excellent job controlling the ball at the midefield. The offensive unit of Coryn, Gina, Anna and Catie were making some beautiful passes and runs to get the offense moving. The Lions had several missed opportunites and with only 5 minutes to go in the game the Black Lighting held on to their one goal lead. The Lions began pressuring the ball and it paid off as the Black Lighting were forced into an defensive error that gave the Lions an indirect free kick. Jesscia made a beautiful pass to Coryn but the ball went just wide of the net. Then Coryn took a beautful pass right in front of the goal and with a couple of quick moves shot the ball into the back of the net for the equalizer. The momentum had clearly swung in favor of the Lions. Less than a minute later, Coryn took a corner kick from the right side and with incredible precision curled the corner kick over the goalies head for the go ahead goal. The Lions were not done. With less than a minute to play Gina took a ball midway up the field and dribbled past a couple of defenders and skillfully placed the ball into the net for the third and final goal. This was an outstanding game for the Lions as they showed a great deal of poise and determination to play a full 60 minutes of soccer. We had to overcome an almost game long one goal defecit and stiffeling heat and concluded the season with an emotional win. Excellent performance by the entire Lions team as the defense anchored by Catie and Katie in the goal and the entire defensive unit of Diana, Ciara, Cara, Page and Jessica shut down the Black Lighting in the second half. Great game Lions!!!
Sunday June 1st
FPYC Lions 6 goals vs PAC Attack 0 goals
On the second to last game of the spring season, the Lions traveled to play the PAC Attack on a beautiful spring afternoon. The Lions took control of the game from the very outset controlling the ball and playing good solid possession soccer. The Lions were unable to capitalize on some early opportunities but at the 10:00 minute mark, Gina intercepted a broken play in front of the goal and put the ball in for the first score of the game. The Lions kept up the pressure and the defense played especially well keeping the ball on the Lions side of the field. The midfield duties were shared by Maria and Ayda, who both did an excellent job of directing the offense and making passes out to the wings to spread the ball out. Gina scored her second goal and a beautiful follow up on a nice save for the keeper. The third goal before the half, Coryn made a nice corner kick that was mishandled by the PAC defense and the Lions were up by 3 at the half. The second half the Lions really settled into a rhythym and were making some beautiful passes and runs to open space. The Lions had several other opportunities that were missed with Caite Z. kicking two over the goal post. Gina settled a nice pass from Maria inside the box to score her third of the game. On a beautiful cross, Catie Z. settled the ball nicely this time and made a perfect shot for the fifth goal of the game. The final goal was scored with a nice hustle play by Gina in the box who immediatley shot the goal for her fourth of the match!! This was a nice game for the Lions as they concentrated on making solid passes and working on our offensive buildup. The defense has an outstanding game recording a shutout with Catie & Katie sharing goalie duties and the defense anchored by Diana and a nice rotation of our wing fullbacks of Ciara/Cara and Jessica/Paige. Nice game Lions!!

FPYC Lions 2 goals vs ARL Rowdies 2 goals
This week the Lions hosted the ARL Rowdies in a match that had significant consequences for the end of the year standings. The Rowdies are currently undefeated and the Lions knew this was going to be a tough match. The Lions had all of their players back from injury so they were ready to play. The Rowdies started out with a bang as they took the ball down the right flank and scored the first goal of the match with less than 2 minutes gone in the first half. The Rowdies kept up the pressure and the Lions appeared to be playing apprehensive. The Rowdies scored their second goal and the Lions found themselves with the biggest deficit of the season as the half came to a close. At halftime, we discussed being more aggressive at the midfield and not to panic but play good solid soccer and the goals would fall. The Lions started out the second half with renewed passion taking six or seven quality shots in the first 10 minutes. At the 11:00 minute mark Jessica made a beautiful pass to Anna on the wing who collected the ball with poise and dribbled the ball down the field and with precision knocked the ball into the back of the net for the Lions first goal of the game. The momentum had definitely swung in favor of the Lions. The defense anchored by Diana, Ciara, Cara, Jessica and Paige did a spectacular job in the second half shutting down the Rowdies attack. With 10:00 minutes remaining in the game, Gina made a pass to Coryn who made a great shot for the equalizer. Both teams had several opportunities to score but the match ended up tied at two goals a piece. This was a hard fought game for the Lions as they showed a lot of character negating a two goal deficit.

FPYC Lions 3 goals vs PAC Striker 97 0 goals
The Lions were looking to rebound after last week’s tough loss to the Panthers as they traveled to play the PAC Strikers on a damp spring day. The Lions appeared to control the game with some excellent ball movement and penetration but the Strikers defense was able to keep the Lions from scoring. The first half ended scoreless. At half time, we discussed the Lions necessity of having to play with more passion especially at the midfield. In the second half, the Lions were definitely more aggressive but were still having difficulty getting any real serious scoring opportunity. With only 6:00 minutes remaining in the game Gina made a beautiful pass to Coryn who put the ball in the net for the first score of the game. Less than a minute later, Katie C punted the ball from and it bounced over the Striker defense and Gina settled the ball in took a couple of dribbles and put the ball into the net for the second of the game. With less than 20 seconds remaining, Catie Z. took a ball down the wing past several defenders and drilled a low shot just inside the post for the third goal of the match.
Sunday May 4th
FPYC Lions 0 goals vs BRYC Panthers 1 goal
For the second week in a row, the Lions were playing a tough opponent and this week’s match against the BRYC Panthers was another great test for both teams. To make matters more challenging, the Lions were still missing Cara and this week lost Diana who broke her wrist and Jessica who had the flu. The Lions were playing without many of their starting defenders. Both teams started out playing very hard for the ball and making possession very difficult to maintain for either team. The Lions moved Gina back to sweeper and she was doing a great job distributing the ball from the back line. Ciara and Paige were also having excellent games stifling the Panthers offense. The first half ended scoreless. In the second half, the Panthers moved the ball up the right wing and on a unassuming shot that the Lions keeper at first mishandled and the ball went through her legs but the keeper recovered and pulled the ball in but the referee had determined the ball had crossed the goal line for the only goal of the game. This was an incredible gutsy game for the Lions as they were playing without three of their defensive players against a very good opponent.
Sunday April 27th
FPYC Lions 3 goals vs PWSI Courage 1 goal
This was the Lions toughest match of the season against a talented PWSI team on the all weather field at Howiston Homestead Park. The Lions were going to be missing Cara and Gina both out with broken arms. We were also missing Paige, so for the second week in a row the Lions were down to 1 sub. Both the Lions and Courage were undefeated so this match was a great test for both teams. The Lions came out very strong and were able to get some very good penetration on the wings. The Courage play a very good possession style of play but the Lions were able to keep the Courage from getting any real quality shots off. As the Lions were able to push up the field, Jessica took advantage of a loose ball just outside the penalty box and drilled one into the back of the net for the first goal of the match. The Lions kept up the pressure and Coryn took a pass from Maria and put it into the back of the net as the Lions took a 2 goal advantage into the half. In the second half the Courage came out with renewed passion and was able to move the ball deeper into the Lions defense. The Courage recorded a goal at the 10 minute mark of the second half and the momentum appeared to be shifting. The Lions did not give up and kept pressure on the ball. Both teams missed several chances. With 5 minutes remaining in the game the Courage were called for a penalty just outside the penalty box. Jessica took the direct kick and drilled it into the back of the net to seal the victory for the Lions. This was an excellent win for the Lions against a formidable opponent.
Saturday April 26th
FPYC Lions 2 goals vs SYC Pride Red 0 goals
The Lions overcame some adversity to win their second game of the season. Earlier in the week Gina broke her elbow and during pre-game warm-ups, Cara broke her wrist! We were also missing Anna, so the Lions were down to 1 sub. The Lions knew what they had to do and that was play tough soccer from the outset. The Lions were having success moving the ball and making passes across the field. On a beautiful pass from Coryn to Katie C on the wing, Katie took several dribbles and drilled the ball into the back of the net to put the Lions up 1 goal. The Lions continued to keep pressure on the midfield. On another cross from Coryn deep in the opponent’s box, Maria was there for the easy goal and to seal the win for the Lions. This victory was a good win for the Lions having lost two teammates unexpectedly to injury.
Saturday April 12th
FPYC Lions 3 goals vs MCLN Extreme Gold 1 goal
On a beautiful spring afternoon, the Lions kicked off their season by playing the MCLN Extreme Gold. Both teams came out playing hard and it was obvious the girls were ready to get the season started! The Extreme Gold had some early success moving the ball. At the 10 minute mark the Extreme Gold had a nice run down the left wing and on a defensive miscue they took advantage with a nice low shot to notch the first goal of the match. The Lions rebounded and started playing with some purpose and started controlling the midfield. The Lions defense started pushing up the field and at the 20 minute mark Cara scored on a nice play from her fullback position to tie the game before half. In the second half the Lions really took charge with the defense and midfield controlling the ball. The defensive pressure paid off as Jessica pushed up and scored the go ahead goal. The Lions kept up the pressure and Gina scored the decisive goal on a beautiful pass from Ayda. Overall this was a total team and a great way to get the season started.
Let's Go Lions!!!
