SAN CARLOS (4-20-12) — When it comes to clutch situations, just hand Mira Mesa High senior TANI LEASAU a bat.
The Cal State San Marcos bound catcher drove in both runs with line singles in the 3rd and 5th innings, allowing the Marauders to slip past host Patrick Henry, 2-0, in Thursday's (Apr.19) battle of Eastern League co-leaders.
Leasau, who lined out to the pitcher to start an inning-ending double play in the 1st, continues to hit the ball hard, driving in both of the MAUGA sisters in the victory.
In the 3rd, QUIRISA MAUGA lined a basehit to center, then LANI VANTA sent a drive over the left-fielder's head, but it too went for a single when the runner had to play halfway since the line was catchable.
Leasau then made it three straight Mira Mesa hits with a shot up the middle.
MERCEDES HUMPHREY followed with a fourth consecutive Marauders single, but Patrick Henry right fielder SYDNEY JAMES fired a strike to catcher MADDY BARRAZA to nail Vanta at the plate.
Two innings later, KATIYANA MAUGA went to the opposite field with a double to right-center field. She scored on another Leasau basehit.
Meanwhile, freshman ALICIA GARCIA tossed a 4-hit shutout at Patrick Henry. She struck out three.
For the Patriots, ALLY FAILLACE went 1-for-2 with a bunt single, a walk and a sacrifice bunt.
