Bertrand outduels Covarrubias to lead Brewers to victory.
Greg Bertrand allowed only 2 hits and 3 runners in 7 strong innings. He was in control all game and took advantage of a fine defense by the Brewers. Scott Singleton came in to pitch the final 2 innings working out of a bases loaded situation in the 8th and earning the save.
For the Reds, Tony Covarrubias was on as well. Only allowing 1 run to the hard hitting Brewers in a complete game effort.
The only run of the game came in the 2nd as Joe Pita singled in Mark Grizzle who had singled earlier in the inning. Fine effort by both teams in 106 degree weather on a fantastic field.
Although the Brewers played an errorless game, and there were many highlights, the defensive play of the game came in the top of the ninth. The Reds' speedy leadoff hitter, Luis Cruz, lined an apparent single to right field, but rightfielder, Mark Behn quickly retrieved it and fired a bullet to 1st baseman Matt Trites to nail Cruz by a half step. Had he gotten on, he likely would have tried to steal second or the Reds might have tried to bunt him over, and the Brewers would have faced the toughest part of the Reds' lineup with the tying run in scoring position.
