Championship Match Victory over Long Island Tournament TeamMatch number four against the Prime Time Pride was slated to originally be our fourth and final game of the tournament's round robin phase before the championship final. Both teams headed into this game with three wins against no losses and both had already qualified for the finals. Given that temperatures were in the middle nineties by the 11:00am kickoff, it was jointly decided between the tournament organizers and both sets of coaches to turn this game into the Championship Final.
Prime Time figured to play hard in this game as it was their first and only game of the day. Their players from a variety of LIJSL Division One teams figured to come out playing hard. Commack countered the physical aggressive play with quick two touch play. Liz opened the scoring in the eighth minute as her shot from the right side about ten yards off the touch line was placed perfectly into the left side netting of the goal. Tori doubled the lead three minutes later on a breakaway where she brought the ball from right-to-left and dribbled around the Prime Time keeper and placed her shot home. During the last fifteen minutes of the half, Prime Time played very physically trying to slow the Blasters attack and as we headed to the halftime break, play became chippy, exactly what Commack did not want to see. In the second half, Gina played a nice ball from the left side that struck the right post in the tenth minute. Midway through the second half, Jen M. was injured just off the field and Commack did well to keep their game play under control. The Blasters were generating chances but Prime Time capitalized on a defensive error as Sara's attempt to change the field in the twenty-third minute was intercepted and the resultant shot was arched over her head for a 2-1 game. Commack's offensive attack came back to life as Nicky scored her second goal of the tournament on an assist from Ashley on a perfectly placed set piece. Finally, with two minutes remaining, Katie scored her fifth of the tournament assisted by Nicky for a 4-1 final score. Following four wins, the Commack Blasters accepted their team trophy for winning the Inaugural Empire Cup.
