Blasters Open Scoring, Second Half Swoon CostlyDay two saw the Commack Blasters taking the field without a chance at a semi-final berth, a very unusual position from all of their recent tournaments. None the less, the return match from last season's Colonial League saw the Blasters play against the Howell United Eclipse. After an outstanding first half, four second half goals were allowed on way to a 5-1 final score.
Scoring opened only five minutes into the match as Katie Gradel crossed a fine ball to Liz whose shot picked the upper left corner for a 1-0 lead. The Blasters were building momentum when a seemingly innocent cross five minutes after our opening score resulted in a low shot by Howell which caught the right side netting for a 1-1 tie to the half. Stephanie went into net for Sara in the second half. The tenth minute saw our defensive formation beaten and a Howell attacking player dribble around our keeper for a 2-1 lead. Meredith seemed to equalize the game in the fifteenth minute as her shot hit the crossbar and rippled the netting, but the goal was called off by the referee. Howell countered three minutes later for a 3-1 lead. Two high balls in the final ten minutes were both misplayed en route to a 5-1 final score. Despite the difficult second half, good efforts were still shown. Attending our Sunday match were coaches from Frostburg, the Citadel, Brandeis, Johns-Hopkins, Gettysburg and others.
