Second Half Rally Falls Short, Championship Awards GivenWhile the third and final day of the 2007 CASL Raleigh Shootout Showcase saw the Commack Blasters entertain only twelve closing day coaches, the action was still intense and entertaining. After falling behind 3-0, two late goals produced an exciting closing ten minutes leading to the 3-2 final score.
Virginia opened the scoring two minutes into the game as Ashley and Liz were split and the ball was slotted past Sara, the first goal yielded in more than 230 minutes of play during our last two showcases. The lead doubled just before the half for a 2-0 score. Sara returned to the pipes to start the second half at the request of two coaches. A third goal was allowed that handcuffed the Blasters' keeper for a 3-0 lead. While Stephanie and the defense kept the scoring quiet from there, Commack scored two in the closing ten minutes, both from Katie Gradel. In the final five minutes, the Blasters had all the pressure and several coaches noticing the team's work ethic. While the team did not get the equalizer, the game led to several post game discussions with college coaches regarding specific players. Coaches attending this game included representatives from Johns Hopkins, University of Virginia, William & Mary, Carleton, American, Barry, Drexel, Mount Olive College, Highpoint, IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis), Christopher Newport (VA), University of Delaware, Hofstra, Meredith University, and Virginia Wesleyan.
