First Half Penalty Kick Sets Tempo in Final MatchDay two of the Jefferson Cup 2008 opened with cloudy, cold conditions as sleet was falling at Deep Run High School in Virginia, a far cry from our eighty degree temperatures just fourty-eight hours earlier. Despite the conditions, Commack faced off against the New Jersey Wildcats (formerly, the Hibernian Crush), a strong Region One contender in all of their tournaments.
Scoring opened in the sixth minute as a defensive penalty was called against LB inside the box for tripping. The resulting penalty kick was sent wide left and struck the inside of the post, rebounding back towards the eighteen yard box. Commack was not ready for the rebound as the Wildcats stepped in for a second shot that found the netting for a 1-0 lead. The Blasters played well for the remainder of the half as the defensive unit kept the score level. Offensively, the midfielders were pressing up the field to keep pressure on New Jersey while the forwards were pushing inside the box. In the seventeenth minute, Saulty netted a goal that was called back for being a "half torso offside". In the second half, the Wildcats netted two goals, one at the midpoint of the half and one at the end, to close the scoring at 3-0. Coaching attendance for this game was good given the weather conditions as SUNY/Binghamton, New Hampshire, Siena, Boston University, Virginia Wesleyan, and several others were at the match.
