Strong First Half Hour Yields No Blasters GoalsMatch number two of the Jefferson Cup 2008 Premier Orange flight saw the Commack Blasters take on the Virginia Rush Nike who the team last saw at the CASL/Raleigh Tournament in December. Despite great opportunities and strong play in the first thirty minutes from our home town Blasters, Virginia responded with a goal just before half time and two in the second half to take the match, 3-0.
The Commack Blasters had excellent offensive pressure early in the game and a corner kick opportunity was just stopped outside the goal line by a Rush defender in the sixteenth minute. After playing a pressing game, Commack yielded a goal in minute thirty-six as Virginia scored on a well placed low shot to the far post for a 1-0 halftime lead. Scores in the second half in the fifth and twenty-eighth minutes sealed the final result in favor of Virginia. As a result, Commack dropped both matches on the tournament's opening day. None the less, the action was with the coaches as schools including Brown, Fordham, Highpoint, Brandeis, Bryant, SUNY/Binghamton, George Washington, Pace, William and Mary, University of Pittsburgh, Skidmore College, Bucknell, Virginia Wesleyan, Boston University, Johns-Hopkins, Slippery Rock, and many others were at the field.
