First Half Goals Leave Huge Hole, Strong Second HalfThe final match of the 2008 Shenentaha Mad Dog Mania College Showcase featured the Commack Blasters playing against the Mamaroneck Panthers. Several defensive splits in the opening half helped Mamaroneck open a big lead and despite some powerful efforts in the second half, Commack surrendered the match, 5-2.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the seventh minute in a two-on-one situation and doubled that lead just four minutes later on a breakaway as the defensive trap was not being called by the side referee in the two-man system. In minute fourteen, the Blasters were left scratching their heads as Mamaroneck opened a 3-0 lead on a set piece that again appeared to be their second offside goal in less than five minutes. Despite a good initial save from Caroline in the twenty-second minute and second defensive save, Mamaroneck managed to take advantage of a failed clearance for a 4-0 halftime gap. The Commack Blasters stepped up their play in the second stanza as pressure was inside the Mamaroneck box throughout the first fifteen minutes. Two hand balls in minutes eight and fourteen were both converted by Nicky to close the gap to 4-2. Katie dribbled around an on-coming Panthers keeper just three minutes later, but her shot from the deep left side went high over the net. Liz made a great offensive turn in the twentieth minute on which the Mamaroneck keeper made a diving save. Commack switched to a 3-4-3 to close the scoreboard gap given their momentum, but surrendered a late goal to close the scoring at 5-2. Limited coaching attendance at this match (only a couple of repeat coaches with earlier interests) as the tournament drew to a close.
