TYNESIDE UNITED CLAIMS THIRD LEAGUE TITLE IN PKs
    Phillip Detmer / TynesideUnited.com

June 14, 2009 (LAS VEGAS, Nevada) -- Tyneside United were crowned Las Vegas Major Soccer League club champions after beating fellow LVMSL club Caesars Palace at McCarran Marketplace Park ealier today. It was the 3rd time in the past three seasons these two clubs have met in the Las Vegas Major Soccer League final.

After Tyneside Utd. outlasted Caesars Palace for the regular season title a couple of weeks ago, this match was highly anticipated and hardly disappointed. Caesars Palace were the better team early in the first half and put a lot of pressure on the Tyneside defense with Ricky Hernandez leading the way. There was some uncertainty about him being able to perform on the big stage leading up to the final, but he silenced the critics with just 8-mins into the game when he calmly placed a shot into the upper corner of the Tyneside goal and put Caesars ahead. Caesars seemed to sit back just a bit after the goal and it cost them as it allowed Tyneside to start possessing the ball more in the midfield. Tyneside scored an important goal right before half, as the ball found Danny Welsh just outside the six yard box after Reggie Bolden redirected a header to the far post after Brian Rogers served in a corner kick. It was a bit unlucky for Caesars, but Tyneside were finally rewarded for their effort.

The second half belonged to Tyneside for the most part. They seemed the more aggressive team and created many more opportunities including a Lance Esther blast off the outside of the post. Tyneside made some half-time substitutions and they were linking up well in midfield as Ben Stott and Jeff Canarelli were starting to find more open space. Caesars did create a few quality chances of their own though, and would’ve scored if it wasn’t for the brave play of both Oscar Lopez and captain Danny Welsh.

ThumbnailTyneside finally broke the dead-lock in the 56th minute on a corner kick. Javier Hernandez served in a hard driven ball to the near post, where Reggie Bolden rose above the Caesars defense to head the ball just under the crossbar to give Tyneside a 2-1 lead over their rivals. The game got heated soon after, as Caesars began to press the Tyneside defense in search of an equalizer. A scuffle broke out in the 63rd minute, resulting in a second yellow card for Ben Stott and a straight red card for Moises Ixta. Both teams would now have to finish the game with ten men.

Tyneside seemed certain to secure the win and had several more chances to score a goal. However, it was Caesars Palace who scored next in the 78th minute as Hernandez equalized for his side with his second goal of the game. Caesars Palace benefited from a quick counter-attack after Tyneside were caught out of position on a corner-kick play on the opposite end of the field. The Caesars defense cleared the ball out and found the Caesars forward alone on the outside and had a clear chance for a shot to the near post to level the scoreline 2-2.

The game ended dead-locked at 2-2 after regular time and sending the match straight to penalty-kicks. Caesars Palace had the chance to put the game away in penalty-kicks after Ricky Abrego missed another important penalty chance. It was not to be though as Tim Velasquez came up big with an important save on the last round of shots. The penalty shootout then went to the sudden death. Danny Welsh buried his shot to the left corner followed by Phillip Detmer and Steve Lazarus. Tim Velasquez then sealed the victory for Tyneside United after saving Caesars weak effort on the next round which gave them the 7-6 victory in PK’s. All in all, it was a great match and a fitting end to what has been an exciting year in the Las Vegas Major Soccer League.
