18Us Earn National Berth!
The newly developed 18U Germantown Titans have been making a name for themselves by beating some of the best teams in the area. Playing in only their second tournament of the season, the Tri-state Thunder ASA qualifier in Hagerstown, MD, the Titans stole the championship on Sunday in a 3-game single elimination rally, after already playing 2 pool games that same morning to make up for the torrential rain that flooded the field on Saturday.
After losing a sloppy game to the Frederick Heartbreakers in their second pool play game, most would think that would be disheartening. However, the Titans pulled themselves together to “play Titan ball” and after beating the Damascus Hurricanes with 5 runs in the top of the 7th inning to win 6-1, they had a 10- minute break and a chance to redeem themselves. Heads were back in the game against the Heartbreakers, as pitcher Rebecca Einstein led an intense game that flipped back and forth. Beth Ann Fusco and Rachel Browning led the team with three hits each, while Sarah Meleney knocked in three runs. Mercedes Reid had the game winning hit, driving in Einstein to beat the Heartbreakers 6-5 in the bottom of the 7th inning. Together the team tallied 13 hits and had an unbelievable batting average of .542.
Finally the championship game was pitched by Kelly Callan who pitched a total of 27 innings on Sunday, against the Lakeshore Lightening. In a true team effort, the Titans won by the mercy rule in 5 innings with a score of 8-0 and won their first championship along with a berth to ASA Eastern Nationals in Salem, Virginia. Head coach Jim Krichbaum indicated that “For a team that just came together, the players are meshing well and are focused on playing good ball. I expect to be very competitive in all the tournaments that we play, and all the coaches are expecting excellent outcomes.” The pitching staff, consisting of Lauren Fusco, Callan and Einstein, have combined for an team ERA of 1.74, has been rock solid and gives our offense the opportunity to win games,” commented pitching coach Rich Einstein.

The 16U team won their first game 7-3, which earned them a right to play in the championship game where they lost a tight game, 4-3.
