I found a interesting post on a local football message board I would like to share with everyone... All, Went to a JAA game last night to support a friend and their team did very well it was a midget game. After the game, I noticed that 90% of the kids from both teams had mentally moved on from the game. Their biggest issue was where they were going to eat, and they definitely wanted their after game treat. In the stands, the parents on the winning team were celebrating, yelling chants and as happy as can be. The parents from the losing team were planning how they were going to kill the coaches from their team. In the parents mind, these coaches from the losing team were complete idiots. Comments were made about the coaches with no regard for the family and friends of the coaches that may be in the stands to support their husbands that voluteer for free, while the parents in the stands offer nothing! Yes they paid their money and have the right to do and say what they feel, but the look on those coaches face said it all. No words the parents said could make them feel worse than they already did. I held my head in shame. I held it in shame because I've been there! I've been there, and did not deserve it. Parents make volunteering so much more difficult than it has to be. Coaches are doing the best they can, for free! Not even free, we spends thousands of dollars over the course of a season, especially the cities that have inner cities. Gas, picking up and dropping off kids, paying for physicals and for kids fees that can't afford to pay. Buying them cleats, babysitting them because their parents can't be found. I have had kids show up at my house because they didn't want to go home, and I proudly do this, would stand in line and pay money to be a role model for these kids, and because I lost a game, I have had parents disrespect me and my family in the stands and on a message board, not to my face, but behind a screen name. Many coaches sacrifice time away from their families and time away from work to do this. Work is also effected for many coaches. Can't concentrate on anything but football when you are preparing for a game. Parents if you are a better coach and role model than your coach/coaching staff, where are you? We need you! We need your time, money and car to coach, mentor and transport these kids. Are you out there? If so, please man up, I mean step up and show us what you have! Funny thing about the game I attended, the coaches from that winning team are only 1 or 2 losses from being in the same position those other coaches are in. I have coached 7 seasons total, all but 1 in the playoffs or championship, and even that isn't good enough for some, and at the end of the day, it's cool with me, it's almost a part of the job now-a-days! For what it's worth, I will ask all parents and the like to support their coaches and boards win or lose. They volunteer so much of their time for two reasons, the love of the game and the love of the kids, so even in losing, they have earned your respect. For the few that are not coaching for the right reasons, time will weed them out anyway, always does. Finally, I would like to send love to all coaches, board members, team moms and parents for contributing to little league sports. I love and respect you all, win or lose! Coach Smith- SB Cardinals
