Passed away suddenly at his home that he loved, on Thursday, September 14, 2023. He was married to Robin Fetterly for 49 years. Father to Ryan, Rory and the late Reed. Son-in-law to Helen Fetterly. Brother to Karl, Craig, Wane and Larry Montgomery. Born in St. Catharines, Randy was a proud member of the Ironworker Union Local 736 out of Hamilton. Randy was employed by the City of St. Catharines Fire Department for 28 years, retiring in 2012. Monty enjoyed many years playing lacrosse, baseball, football, and hockey starting from a very early age. He met and maintained many friends through his years playing the sports he loved. Sean was a devoted father to Danny and Jake (Danielle) and grandfather to Tayler. He was predeceased by his parents Cornelius and Elinore Sullivan and sisters Maureen (Denny) and Patty. He is survived by sisters Kathy Connie (Greg) Terry (Rick) and brothers Casey (Debbie) and Ryan. He was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews. Sean grew up in Thorold where he was an outstanding athlete in his youth. He won a Memorial Cup playing defense for the 1975-76 Hamilton Fincups. Sean worked for many years as a ranch foreman in Alberta until his recent retirement. Got to meet a great bunch of kids and all the coaching staffs and some of the nicest people that were the shareholders. Most of these people has since passed away, but, they will remain in my heart and mind. We were very fortunate to help a lot of these young men move on to higher education. To all of these players that might see this, it was a pleasure working with you. |

I attended Niagara College and played on that 75-76 team. Please correct if possible. I cannot remember my statistics but do remember getting knocked out of the playoffs by Guelph Platers. But I remember that in their next game they beat one of the best teams 11 to 0. Then they came back to earth. This should be documented on the internet somewhere, somehow. |

He was a loving husband to Donna for 63 years. A devoted Dad to his girls Jo Ann Quam (Pat) and Dana Dennis (Chris). A very proud, loving and dedicated grampa to Tyler and Brittany Dennis. So many things to say about a great man, good friend and mentor. He started his business Crown Delivery in 1954 which grew into Crown Moving and on to Crown Trucking Services until he retired in 2012. His sense of humor, stories and of course his jokes are part of the wonderful legacy he leaves that will keep him in our hearts forever. We would like to thank Dr Linda Lee, her staff and the Walker Cancer Clinic for the excellent care they provided. As well as CCAC and St. Elizabeth nurses Kim, Lori and Linda and to his family Doctor, Dr. Rene deWet and his staff for all their kindness and compassion. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends at the H.L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main Street, Welland on Thursday, May 24th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A service to celebrate Don’s life will be held in the Cudney Chapel on Friday, May 25th at 11 a.m. As an expression of sympathy donations, in memory of Don, may be made to the Walker Family Cancer Centre. Welland May 9, 2017 5:31:20 PM Entry ID: 2081922 | Kenneth Breitenbach Welland Sabres 71-72 Breitenbach, Kenneth , 62 of Pelham Ontario passed away peacefully on Friday April 28th, 2017 surrounded by his loved ones after a long hard fought 6 year battle with cancer. He was born in Welland Ontario, January 9th, 1955. Ken was a professional hockey player in the National Hockey League and was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1975 hockey draft. He played professionally until 1979. After his hockey career, Ken was an entrepreneur with Breitenbach Trucking, a metal fabricator at E.S. Fox, and was a Team Captain with Canadian Tire JumpStart. Above everything for what he was known for he wished to be remembered for by what he was most proud of, being a papa to his 5 grandchildren. Ken is survived by his loving wife Rosemary who was there every step of the way during his battle with cancer. Also survived by his loving mother Joyce Breitenbach and his children Ken Jr. (Gayle) Breitenbach, and Erica (Jeff) Horton. He leaves his grandchildren Victoria, Jenna, Emily, Jeffery Jr. and Megan, his sister in laws and brother in laws Denis and Angelina Carrier, Guy and Adriana Wilson, Clayton and the late Rita Booth, Joe and the late Fernanda Curcio, Kevin Kirk and the late Sylvana Pace. Ken will be sadly missed by his many uncle's, aunt's, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ken is predeceased by his father Ernie Brietenbach, and his in-laws Terzo and Stella Pace. Special thanks to all of the staff at Hospice Niagara who provided exceptional care and comfort to Ken and his family. A celebration of life will be held at Faith Welland Church located at 380 South Pelham Road, Welland Ontario on Tuesday May 9th, 2017. Family will be receiving guests at 10 am with a service at 11 am. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. I would like to clear up the reason for leaving the team mid season. The short reason is that I was very immature, sorry but it is as simple as that. No Mr Cooney was not the reason, money was not the reason, no one on the team was the reason, only immaturity on my part, and I have regretted that decision since. I have stayed in touch with Norm Lalonde, Norm Ethier, Ken MacKenzie, Ken Gazdic. I would love to have email addresses if that is possible and in return I will get you some - especially Brian McDavid who is very kind to mention my name in his article. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Steve loved fishing, golfing, traveling and most of all his girls of whom he was immeasurably proud. His passion and zest for life will be missed by everyone who knew him. I was playing midget with Dunnville and ended up playing in Welland for three years. Good friends along the way with Robbie Balyk and I playing hockey in Welland and baseball in Thorold. Vic Favot and Doug Boyd came to Ohio State with me. Some great memories and that experience gave me the chance to play college hockey @ Ohio State...start a hockey program @ Miami University....then begin my pro career with the Detroit Red Wings in 1990, Florida Panthers in 1995 and currently with the CBJ starting in 1999. Thank you Welland for giving my first experience away form my hometown of Dunnville!!! |

| Brian McDavid Kalamazoo, MI January 2, 2012 4:10:17 PM Entry ID: 1944455 | Playing for the Welland Sabres was awesome. I was 15 when I left home for the first time. I'd just got cut from the Sudbury Wolves in training camp. I was the last cut. Mr. Cooney was scouting our camp and told me that he would sign me right away. He was high on me. He said he would fly me to Welland to show me the rink and the city. I got off the plane. He picked me up. We made a stop at this house and he got out and told me to stay in the car. Ten minutes later, he came out and we loaded up another person, the only thing was, the other person was in a body bag. I questioned Mr Cooney, and he explained that he was a funeral director. That was his way of life, but for me, a little overwhelming. Welcome to Welland! After leaving the Wolves training camp, there was this buzz on how tough this Jerry Portelance was. I remember my first game playing with the Sabres. It was against the Guelph Biltmores. I remember looking around and thinking “Who is this Portelance?”, number one, and number two, “There's no one here who looks that tough”. So, I turned to the player next to me, and asked Who is Jerry Portelance? He asked why I was asking. I told him what the other players had said, but I said I couldn't see anyone here who looked very tough. He answered by saying “Is that so?”. As I looked down at this player that seemed to be only five feet tall with a “baby face” he said “I'm Jerry Portelance!”. I then saw Mr. Portelance in action. He took on their toughest player and mopped him up. Then he came over and said “Welcome to the league.” It was going to be a real challenge. Playing in Welland was a wonderful experience. It was the start of forming me, not only as a player, but also a young man. While I was with the Sabres for the 1974-75 season, I lived with Donna and Dave Wight. I returned to stay with them each fall for the next ten years, while teaching at Burkholder's Hockey School. They are great people. After 37 years, I am still close with them. I went on to play pro, drafted by the New York Rangers, and playing 95% of my career with the Detroit Red Wings organization. I was on two Turner Cup (IHL) championship teams, and one Calder Cup (AHL) championship team. Tearing my rotator cuff ended my playing career. How time flies. I remember Don Snider, our coach. Murray Burkholder always hold a special place in my memory. He was a small man with a huge presence. He kept us on our toes. He brought out the best in me. I later had the opportunity to work at his hockey school. His sons were my friends. What a wonderful ride it was. I will never forget the great memories and friends I made. |
