Game vs. Delaware Valley (PA) Added To Schedule
On May 22nd (date changed) the Lakers will travel to Matamoras, PA to take on Delaware Valley Middle School. This game has been added due to empty schedule slots replacing one of the three games dropped due to Chapel Field being unable to field a modified team this season. Last season the Lakers traveled to DV to take on sister school Dingman Delaware. This trip will include a meal stop.....
GWL Bats Come Alive vs. Seward
May 12th - The Lakers traveled to Florida Little League Fields for the second time this season. Connor Schoenrock coming back from a muscle pull in his lower back would get his second start of the season. Schoenrock would be a little wild walking the bases loaded and giving up three runs in the first. The three runs would tie the game after the first inning. The Lakers had given Schoenrock the tree run cushion much the same way, by drawing walks and getting a sharp single from Christian Ruiz.
Schoenrock would settle down giving up only three more runs over the next three innings. The Lakers would stay ahead the entire game as Matt Mondschein, Pat Cisek, and Christian Ruiz would supply most of the offense. They combined to go 8 for 9 with Mondschein gobbling up the RBI's with 4.
The game would get close as close as 11-9 and Schoenrock was pulled for Pat Cisek in the 5th. Cisek would not allow a run and the Lakers tabbed 6 runs in the 5th to put the game completely out of reach. Brendan Buckley, Sean Hickey, John Olson, and Connor O'Toole also collected hits in the contest. O'Toole spiked the plate 4 times out of the ninth spot in the batting order.
The game was ended after the 5th inning by the S.S. Seward coach due to the score and reservations of the field.
Final score Lakers 17 - Spartans 9
Cron's Corner
Not much to talk about here. The Spartans are severely undermanned this season due to the JV coach pulling up so many kids from modified. We are hitting the ball well but we are walking too many batters and making silly errors that will cost us in a close game. It's time to work on these issues in practice. See ya at home vs. Tuxedo.
Jordan Buckley Gets Walk Off RBI vs. O'Neill
May 7th - The Lakers welcomed the James I. O'Neill Raiders to GWL field for their first match up of the season. Whenever these two teams lock horns it is always a battle.
Pat Cisek (1-1) would get his second start of the season for the Lakers as he has mainly been picked to pitch against the toughest opponents. Cisek would come out firing in the top half of the first striking out the Raider's 3 hitter Ortiz looking and getting the clean up hitter Nasi swinging. Cisek would go on to retire 7 of his first 9 hitters in the contest.
GWL leadoff hitter Mickey Hirrel would score the Lakers first run of the game in the bottom of the first as he worked a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and would come into score on a Matt Mondschein sac fly. The run was the only scoring for the Lakers in the first as O'Neill pitcher Hertado would toughen up to get Eduardo Vargas to pop out to first.
The Lakers bats would wake up in the second, as Brendan and Dan Buckley would get the inning started with two sharp singles. Both Buckley's would come around to score in the inning with some more help from Hirrel would also single and score in the frame.
O'Neill pitcher Hertado would then settle down to allow only two more runs over the next 3 innings. Christain Ruiz would show off some speed in the third as he laced a triple in the gap to reach with a stand up 3 bagger. Ruiz would score giving the Lakers a 6 - 3 lead after 3 innings.
Cisek would pitch in and out of trouble up until the sixth as he would reach the 98 pitch mark and be lifted for Matt Mondschein. Monschein would have some control problems loading the bases with one out. The turning point of the game came at this point as Mondschein got a come-backer to the mound and went home to Scott Marren who turned and fired to first for a crucial double play. The play would fire-up the Lakers going into the bottom of the seventh tied 7-7.
Hirrel would lead off the bottom half with a single. Coach Cron would then call upon Pat Cisek to lay down a sac bunt. Cisek would execute the bunt perfectly as the O'Neill 3rd baseman would throw the ball over the first baseman’s head setting up and second a third with no one out. O'Neill's coach then elected to intentionally walk Mondschein to load the bases. Coach Cron would call upon pinch hitter Jordan Buckley to deliver. Buckley would take the first pitch for a strike. The second pitch was high and tight and drilled Buckley in the back for the game winner. Final score 8-7!
Cron's Corner
Scott Marren might say that the double play he turned was not that big but I say it was the game. Getting out of a bases loaded one out jam gave us the opportunity to win the game. I really like having this kid Marren on the team. He is a great kid and he loves baseball. He does not get down on himself and he is a team player. If he continues to work on his game he has the potential to play at the next level. This was a fun game to coach and the boy's enjoyed the close competition. We will have to make less errors the next time we play the Raiders or the results will go the opposite way.
