Atwater Alleyoop wins two championships in own tourney
Many talented AAU basketball squads invaded Atwater over the weekend June 22-24, as the Atwater Alleyoop hosted its inaugural Summer Slam tournament.
18 Teams in 4 different age divisions competed in over 30 games at both Buhach Colony High School & Atwater High School. On Sunday it would be grueling as 8 teams fought for titles. Both Atwater Alleyoop squads made a mark on the tournament, winning the 12 U & 13 U titles. The 12 U Alleyoop team would have a tough road to the championship game opening up tourney play with a convincing 37-16 win over the Atwater Jr. Blallerz and then dropping a 37-34 contest to the Lodi Flying Tigers. The Alleyoop would then cement its championship appearance with 30-27 win over the Visalia Ballers. Atwater would seek redemption against the Tigers, who awaited the Alleyoop in the Championship game. Atwater proved to be too much the 2nd time around with a dominating 28-14 win over the Tigers. Joe Marquez & Stefon Gold were huge in the the tournament for Atwater. Atwater's 13 U squad stormed into the Championship game in dominating fashion defeating the Escalon Cougars 52-15, the Stockton Equinox 50-15 and the Lodi Tigers 52-19. The Alleyoop would meet the Cougars once again with the title on the line. Atwater's sqeed and defense again proved to be too much for Escalon as the Alleyoop took the title 48-19. Jaquari People, Robert Garrett, Keith Ducey, Rene Saenz, DJ Dawson and Akeem Peterson all had solid minutes for Atwater.
In the 11 U title game, the Tracy Outlawz defeated the Visalia Ballers 26-19 while in the 14 U championship the Central Valley Hornets held off the Merced All-Stars 38-36. Other teams participating in the tournament included Turlock Saints 10 U team, Visalia Ballers 12 & 14 U teams, Merced All-Stars 11 U team & Tracy Outlawz 12 U squad. "The tournament was really successful," said Tournament Director Keith Ducey. It was really nice seeing all this talent converging in Atwater. There were no problems and all the kids, coaches and fans were great while exhibiting good sportsmanship."
"It was lots of work but well worth it as quality basketball was being played locally and even capping it off with a couple titles was fun," said Coach Rob Garrett. "We'd like to thank Scott Wine & Buhach Colony High as well as Ray Guerrero and Atwater High for their generosity in allowing us to use their facilities. It means a great deal to us to get this type of support from the local schools," said Ducey.
Atwater Alleyoop 13 U squad finishes 2nd in Tracy at the Juneteenth Extravaganza. On June 16 and 17 Atwater competed in the Tracy tournament opening with a tough 38-31 loss to the Tracy Outlawz. Atwater bounced back with a 48-17 win over the Patterson Lakers.and then finished the tournament with a 37-21 win over the Lincoln Trojans. The week prior, both Alleyoop teams traveled to East Palo Alto to compete in the final NAYS Spring Tournament. The 12 U squad opened with a tough 51-29 loss to the eventual champions out of Richmond. Atwater would finish the tournament on a high note with a huge 42-15 win over the Oakland Dominators. The 13 U squad opened the tournament with a decisive 44-23 win over the Milpitas Showtime and captured the championship with a 54-38 win over the 3D basketball Club from Alameda. "It's truly exciting to see our teams compete and even defeat some of the best competition in Northern California," said Coach Rob Garrett. We've done extremely well this season." The Alleyoop plan to compete in one or two more tournaments before the season comes to an end. Thus far the 13 U team has captured 5 championships and added three 2nd place finishes with a 19-3 record, while the 12 U squad has won two championships and finished with three 2nd place finishes with a 9-4 record.

Thunder 12 U Finishes 3rd, while 13 U finishes 5th
June 19, 2006 --
Tracy - The Thunder 13U squad closed out the tournament with a 59-47 loss to the East Bay Bandits. The Thunder made it exciting in the last period tying the game up at 46-46, before stumbling in the waning moments. Missing a couple of players, the Thunder still remained competitive and showed why they are a class group with great work ethic. Andrew Morgan led the Thunder with 12 points and 8 rebounds.
The Thunder 12 U squad faced off against the Tracy Flight for 2nd place and jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the first period, but would be unable to withstand a furious rally by the Flight and end up falling 69-53. Brian Jones had 9 points, Keith Ducey had 8, and Rob Garrett added 7 points to pace the Thunder. "We're happy with how we competed in this tournament, there were some top quality teams that have been together for a while and competed in quite a few tournaments together, and we were still able to compete and hang tough," said coach Rob Garrett.

13 & U Take 2nd, 12 & U take 3rd in Delhi
May 8, 2005 --
Delhi - The Thunder 13 & U squad locked horns with the Fresno Extreme Ballerz in the Championship game, in which Fresno dispatched of the Cen-Cal Raiders by a wide margin to advance. Atwater came in with lofty expectations and a goal of keeping the high octane Fresno offense off the board as much as possible. The plan worked in Atwater's favor early on as Fresno took a 10-9 lead into the half.
Missed scoring opportunities hurt the Thunder early on as two and three shots were missed on various possessions. The Thunder defense held tough and provided a plethora of blocks but Fresno would overcome a horrendous game at the line as they went 2 for 18 and pull out a 35-16 win. "our boys played very physical with these guys thorughout the game but especially early on. We wanted to let them know that we were ready to play and that it wasn't going to be easy," said Coach Steve Harvey. It was similar to a heavyweight fight, I though we played with intensity, we came up just short but we're happy with the performance." "We hurt ourselves by missing 11 easy layouts, you can't do that when you play a team the caliber of Fresno. We'll get back to work on Tuesday and prepare for the next tournament.
12 & U Dominates Modesto Tigers for 3rd Place
Jaquari People & Rob Garrett both had 9 points to lead the Thunder 12 & U squad to a huge 39-8 win over the Modesto Tigers. The defense was extremely solid limiting the Tigers to 4 first half points.
"The boys had to focus after dropping the close one to Fresno All-Net (who won the tournament 60-32 against Cen-Cal) and after we worked out the kinks, things went well for us," said Coach Rob Garrett. "It seemed like our game against Fresno was their "true" championship game, but there's definitely nothing wrong with winning 3rd place. We're happy for the boys and their effort."

13 U advance to Championship Game, While 12U splits and will play for 3rd
May 6, 2006 --
Delhi - The 12 and under squad opened with a heartbreaking 37-32 loss to Fresno All-Net. The Thunder darted out to a 20-10 lead but was unable to withstand a furious Fresno rally in the waning moments of the game. Rob Garrett led all scorers with 16 points while Jaquari People added 6 points and 10 rebounds. "We didn't finish strong enough," said coach Rob Garrett. "Against a talented team like these guys we can't let a lead slip away and expect to win."
In the 2nd game, Atwater was scheduled to play Diablo Valley G&B Club, however they didn't have enough players so they forfeited.
The Thunder 12 & U's will take on The Tigers Sunday morning at 8:00am for 3rd place.
The 13 & Under advanced to tomorrow's Championship Game after winning a hard fought game in sudden death overtime against Diablo Valley G&B Club. Playing from behind for most of the game and trailing 16-8 just before a buzzer beating 3 pointer bringing the Thunder within 5, as it was 16-11 at the half. Atwater would stormed back and tie the score up at 16-16 before Diablo spurted out to a 7 point lead. Trailing 31-28 with 8.5 seconds left in regulation, Corey Chapman sank a 3-pointer to tie the game 31-31 with 2.4 seconds. The Thunder intercepted an errant pass but failed to make the final shot. The teams then entered sudden death overtime with the first team to score getting the win. The first trip down court Atwater was unable to capitalize missing to scoring opportunities. Atwater then turned back Diablo Valley forcing three missed shots, the ensuing trip down the court saw the Thunder miss 3 shots and then Andrew Morgan came down with the rebound and put it back up and in for the 33-31 win. The crowd erupted as Atwater dodged a bullet. "Our boys didn't play too well today, but when it counted , they dug deep and really showed poise and character in winning this game," said Coach Keith Ducey. "we are definitely excited about the chance to play for a championship." Corey Chapman led Atwater with 11 points while Andrew Morgan added 8 points. Atwater will play the winner of the Cen-Cal Raiders / Fresno Xtreme Ballerz contest Sunday evening at 7:00pm.
