When it comes to alumni games some things don’t change. In a game that was “spirited”, Alumni Goalie Zeric Butters ’09 turned away all of the Aztec shots in the 1st half to keep the lead for the ‘lums. The alumni might have been outshot in the first half but they were able to get 4 or 5 goal lead into half.
The Aztecs did a good job on their clears and moving the ball around on the offensive side. Z continued to make saves or the Aztecs weren’t able to get on goal with some good opportunities. In the 4th quarter the Aztecs made a run when they scored back to back goals. First, a Twin ’10 got open in front of the crease and buried it. The next time down the Aztecs scored when Scott Caruso ’11 got instructions to “Shoot!!” from Jeff Smith ’11 and added another goal.
The unofficial final score was 9-2 for the Alumni. It was a good, entertaining game and great to see the old Aztecs come back to support the team.
Let’s see what else we saw or heard:
> A great showing from the ’05 class who showed us if nothing else that they are in shape and can run.
> I saw Pete “Speedy” Guth ’06 give an Aztec a 20 yard head start and still catch up to him by the restraining line.
> Dylan Dunlap ’09 wearing his blue “Smurf” helmet. For those of you that didn’t know, the blue helmet was what Dylan was wearing when he showed up at his first practice with the Warriors in the 7th grade.
> Spencer Nelms ’08 getting stuffed by Brandon Moreno ’11, not once but twice. Followed by a sideline call to “shoot low!”
> Not sure where the Tahiti Cruiser shirt and/or the Board Short tradition has come from but it should be a standard uniform for future years. The uglier the better.
> Saw “Dobson vs. Dobson” face off battle that seemed to be a draw. Maybe a slight edge to the old man.
> Adam Sell ’06 making a coast to coast clear, lose the ball, chase it down, go back at the goal and then have his between the legs shot go off the top pipe.
> A great turn out from the ’09 class. They didn’t miss a beat after rolling out of bed and onto the field, literally.
> Best Beard - Goes to Jared Wellman. He came after the game started and when he ran out onto the field a lot of people weren't sure who that was.
> Best Tradition - The Class of '05 (then seniors) giving Spencer Nelms a pink belly (then a freshman) just like after their last game at Corona.
It is great that so many of the players that played & graduated in 2005 were able to make it out. It was because of this crew that we were able to establish a club at Corona that year and grow to where the team is today.
The post game bar-b-que (sponsored by Marketside) was a great success and special thanks to Jim Berns and Mike Wall working as the grill masters and Sara Berns, Darolyn Wall, Judy Bock and Kris Burkholder for getting, and keeping, everything organized.
See you next year, the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
