Alumni Stay Undefeated - Win Annual Game 12 - 5
November 27, 2010

The Alumni needed to wake up a little but eventually got things going while cruising to a 12 to 5 win over the Aztecs.

The Aztecs scored first on a goal by Freshman Garret Howell on a feed from Junior Jeff Smith, which let everyone know that the Aztecs were ready. After goals by Howell and Freshman Matt Hoh the Aztec team was up on the Alumni 3-1, and the fans were wondering if this would be the year that the team beats the Alumni.

It stayed close and the current team held a 4-3 lead early in the 2nd quarter. The Alumni started getting some time of possession (meaning that they could rest) and used the "twin power" in transition to build a 3 goal lead at half.

The Alumni started working their offense and the attack duo of Matt Prausa '09 (4 goals) & Will Allen '09 (3 goals) helped build the lead along with midfielders Austin Thibault '10 (2 goals), Jesse Dodt '09 (2 goals) and Ryan Thibault '10 (1 goal). The scoring for the Aztecs came from Freshman Garret Howell (2 goals), Freshman Matt Hoh (1 goal), Junior Ivan Hunter (1 goal) and Senior Cesar Diaz (1 goal).

The "old man" award goes to Defensman Adam Sell '06 for being the oldest graduate at the game and he looked strong making many coast to coast runs as he tried to score this year.

Strong showing from the Alumni for their uniforms and next year we'll have an award for the "best" outfit, as voted on by the fans on the sideline.

A special Thank You to John & Nancy Blevins for organizing and hosting the after game b--b-que. It was great and a good chance for the players & parents to reconnect.

I also want to thank all of the parents that helped with the field prep, field set up, post game hospitality, timing, scoring and clean up.

Thanks to all the Alumni that made it out! See you next year!

Half Fast Lacrosse wins "Norm Webb Memorial" Title

The Corona summer travel team, Half Fast Lacrosse, won the Great Western "Norm Webb Memorial Tournament" this past week in San Diego. Team Half Fast is comprised of players from Corona, Mountain Pointe, EV Elite & Tucson Tanque Verde, and coached by Coach Larry Noble of Mountain Pointe and Coach Cliff Prausa of Corona.

Attack Jeff Smth led the tournament in scoring with 10 goals & 9 assists and was named to the All Tournament Team. Scott also contributed on the offensive end with 7 goals and 4 assists. After recovering from a "stinger" in the first game Andrew did a great job on face-offs in the playoffs including some key wins against the all-tournament fogo that gave us key possesions during the 2nd half of the championship game. Both Will and Zac played strong defense all weekend while Alex made some big time saves at the end of the Semi & Final games of his first "varsity" games to secure the wins.

Everyone played some great lacrosse in the San Diego summer and met a lot of players from other teams. Mark your calendar for Mid-July of 2011 as the Half Fast Lacrosse Team will return to defend their title.

Alumni Win the 1st Alumni vs. Aztec Game
December 1, 2009

When it comes to alumni games some things don’t change. In a game that was “spirited”, Alumni Goalie Zeric Butters ’09 turned away all of the Aztec shots in the 1st half to keep the lead for the ‘lums. The alumni might have been outshot in the first half but they were able to get 4 or 5 goal lead into half.

The Aztecs did a good job on their clears and moving the ball around on the offensive side. Z continued to make saves or the Aztecs weren’t able to get on goal with some good opportunities. In the 4th quarter the Aztecs made a run when they scored back to back goals. First, a Twin ’10 got open in front of the crease and buried it. The next time down the Aztecs scored when Scott Caruso ’11 got instructions to “Shoot!!” from Jeff Smith ’11 and added another goal.

The unofficial final score was 9-2 for the Alumni. It was a good, entertaining game and great to see the old Aztecs come back to support the team.

Let’s see what else we saw or heard:

> A great showing from the ’05 class who showed us if nothing else that they are in shape and can run.

> I saw Pete “Speedy” Guth ’06 give an Aztec a 20 yard head start and still catch up to him by the restraining line.

> Dylan Dunlap ’09 wearing his blue “Smurf” helmet. For those of you that didn’t know, the blue helmet was what Dylan was wearing when he showed up at his first practice with the Warriors in the 7th grade.

> Spencer Nelms ’08 getting stuffed by Brandon Moreno ’11, not once but twice. Followed by a sideline call to “shoot low!”

> Not sure where the Tahiti Cruiser shirt and/or the Board Short tradition has come from but it should be a standard uniform for future years. The uglier the better.

> Saw “Dobson vs. Dobson” face off battle that seemed to be a draw. Maybe a slight edge to the old man.

> Adam Sell ’06 making a coast to coast clear, lose the ball, chase it down, go back at the goal and then have his between the legs shot go off the top pipe.

> A great turn out from the ’09 class. They didn’t miss a beat after rolling out of bed and onto the field, literally.

> Best Beard - Goes to Jared Wellman. He came after the game started and when he ran out onto the field a lot of people weren't sure who that was.

> Best Tradition - The Class of '05 (then seniors) giving Spencer Nelms a pink belly (then a freshman) just like after their last game at Corona.

It is great that so many of the players that played & graduated in 2005 were able to make it out. It was because of this crew that we were able to establish a club at Corona that year and grow to where the team is today.

The post game bar-b-que (sponsored by Marketside) was a great success and special thanks to Jim Berns and Mike Wall working as the grill masters and Sara Berns, Darolyn Wall, Judy Bock and Kris Burkholder for getting, and keeping, everything organized.

See you next year, the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
