HISTORY OF BEAVERTON YOUTH LACROSSE
The Beaverton Youth Lacrosse League also known as "BYL" is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization run by enthusiastic parent volunteers. All students in the Beaverton School District and the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District are welcome to join.
It was founded in September 2002.
The first spring season had over 225 registered players (boys and girls) from the Beaverton School District's middle schools and THPRD areas. Also, other players outside the city of Beaverton participated. A total of 18 teams were formed.
The mission of the league is to promote the game of lacrosse for youth players in the Beaverton School District, both boys and girls, with the emphasis on the development of skills, sportsmanship, fitness, teamwork in an environment that is positive, fun and safe.
Parent volunteers who had coaching experience in other sports were trained as "lacrosse" coaches. They attended coaching clinics given by parents who had the opportunity to play the game of lacrosse in England and the United States.
The spring season started in mid-March and was completed in the last week of May. The players practiced two games a week and played one game every Saturday, a total of 8 official games.
Lacrosse players who played for the Beaverton School District high schools were trained as BYL referees.
Additionally, BYL sponsored their first annual 5th/6th Grade Tournament. Over 15 teams participated in this tournament at the end of the spring season.
Due to the popularity of the spring youth lacrosse program, BYL offered a summer league program. A total of 90 players registered and played one or two games a week for 6 weeks during the summer of 2003.
