Super Bowl fundraiser
January 8, 2009  --   You all saw Hans email, lets all show up to this and get absolutely smashed, er I mean support the team. Its at Rush Hour, party starts when you wake up in the a.m. Everyone should sell 5 tickets, and bring some form of booze for the raffle.

Since Nelly's Bucs completely tanked and missed the playoffs, and the game is in Tampa, he will be pissed off about that the whole time. Also, Tulsa and Guy will chat about the Bengals chances in '09, and Trent will be counting down to MLB opening day. And finally, Norm will most likely be the drunkest. Hopefully some Longhorns show up so they can tell us how good they were when they went to college back in the 80s.

Cards add two players
January 15, 2009  --   The Cards added a couple Calgary veterans today, as Brett Bousquet and Justin Edgar joined our roster. Brett actually played a few games at shortstop for us in 2007 before playing for the Redbirds last summer. He currently attends the University of Pacific in Oregon. You may remember he made what was thought to be the greatest play from a SS in Cardinals history, but the more it was thought about we realized we had Tulsa regularly playing SS back then so opinions on this play are diluted.

Justin is a Babe Ruth alum, and played with fellow Card Justin Bryant at the Babe Ruth World Series. Being one of few players who bat right-handed and throw left handed, he plays the outfield and first base while also being a good pitcher. As vet Bryce McLean will concur, Justin once hit a line drive off Nelly that went just over his glove and if not for the CF fence at Burns would still be steadily rising to this day. Also he currently works for the Hyatt Mercedes Benz dealership, so anyone wanting a sweet ride should consult with him.

As usual, stay tuned to the ticker for more updates.

Team goes over salary cap with latest signing
January 29, 2009  --   We have added another Ontario native, Shawn Scott, to the team. He comes to us having played college in both Michigan and West Virginia, and hails from Windsor. He is a SS who has some pretty impressive stats, but how about this one: he wont be attending the Super Bowl party because his recently engaged brother is having a party that day. Sounds made up to me. This will make it  difficult to gage his post-game beer consumption capabilities. Luckily there is 3 months until the season starts.

In other player news, Chico, who was last seen following up a clutch grand slam by leaving and never coming back is returning for 2009. His arm troubles will hopefully be healed, giving us some pretty solid infield options and a stacked lineup. Also Frenchy most likely wont be back, we wish him luck in the Lobster hunting industry or whatever he does back in Nova Scotia. Hot Karl is on the fence due to accounting season, but for now it isn't looking good. And Kai Alexander, who showed up for one game of a double header last season: who knows. Dickie might be back, but we havent heard from him at this point. And finally Roy may be only coaching/yelling at us at this point.

With the depth of players, we should be able to score touchdowns this year instead of settling for field goals against our FMBA brethren.

Cardinals cant come through in big game
February 2, 2009  --   Possibly the best Super Bowl ever, amid controversial calls and a tainted ending. Still the team named the Cardinals couldn't come through in the big game; a very similar storyline to our baseball team the past few seasons. Yes the Super Bowl party has come and gone meaning baseball season is drawing close, and talks of practice linger much to the dismay of many vets.

There were no incidents other than the talk of Blizz's roommate and Shannon having a boob-off. Shane Black might be gunning to get traded back to the Stags upon leaving 15 mins before kickoff, and all of our rookies who are in town didn't show. Suspensions loom.
Still we had many players out and many beers drank, while also making some coin for the team. Hans, Chris and Glenda won all three of our booze raffles, no it wasnt rigged at all. Also, we set over/unders on number of games that both Chico (now named the Phantom), and rookie Justin Edgar play before never showing up again: it was set at 5.5 for each.

Spa-na-na-na-na-na. Yes, the real topic was that if our team can ever live up to our talent, that we too may be able to warp whistle to level 8: Koopa's castle, err I mean the league title. We just need to stop being fag-gina's, as JB would say. Speaking of JB, congrats as he will be helping coach the Okotoks J-Dawgs this summer. Let's hope he doesn't teach them how to run out a pop-fly to the catcher.

First practice booked
February 13, 2009  --   We are going to the cage on Monday from 7-8, at NSD South. It is located at 7475 Flint Road South, just down the road from the Maid. This is the earliest we have ever practiced by about two months, hope to see you all there.

Practice Schedule
February 17, 2009  --   With the first practice of the year in the books, we are going to continue practicing every Monday night at NSD, at 7pm, until we can get outside.

Cardinals add two players
March 3, 2009  --   Todays practice went well with newly appointed coach JB heading BP. We also added two more players, bringing our total near 30 for the season (actually 22ish). Seriously though this is a tentative roster with the final roster to be set in spring training when we figure out who will still show up. The final roster will be set by having a fungo golf elimination tourney.

Drew Ambach joins us as at a much needed position: catcher, where we now have lowered the average age down to 28 and making Trent's nickname "Boy" seem unfitting. He hails from Missouri, having just graduated from Avila University near Kansas City where he played his college ball. This now brings us to two US players on the team, an all time FMBA record. Also added was pitcher Richard Perkins, who is also related to JB. No word if this is the last signing who is related to JB, but if he ever marries his Cuban g/f we might have to bring in some imports. Richard is a Calgary vet who doesnt drink, which may or may not bring team morale down.

Stay tuned to the ticker for more signings, or trades in exchange for those orange BP balls that would have really come in handy today.

Cardinals Baseball Preview Extravaganza
March 13, 2009  --   Now that Team Canada was embarrassingly eliminated from the WBC by powerhouse Italy, the nations focus can shift to the Calgary Cardinals Baseball season. The team has continued to add players as we have each of the last 3 off-seasons, bringing in some competition at key positions and some extra arms. We have also added at least one additional tournament to the schedule, Fathers Day weekend, although we arent yet confirmed as to which one we are going to: St. Albert or Saskatoon. And there are more exhibition games on the horizon.

Further, we may have overtaken the Longhorns as most hated team in the league since I guess everyone reads our website and most didnt take too kindly to being called out after a few doozers last year. We might have to tone down the website write-ups this season though until we can actually win a game that means something. Nelly, who is a career 0-4 in the FMBA playoffs with an especially bad performance last season will try not to motivate any further teams, or create anymore rivalries when drunk like he did with Acme last year.

Tulsa is currently investigating team apparal and more info will be presented shortly but anyone wanting some sweet gear should contact him. Lastly the most important member of our team: the post-game beer cooler guy, is an open position thus far. Any current team member, or former team cooler guy from other organizations looking to pay $350 to be a member of a great team can join. Resumes should be submitted with a cover letter to team management.

Outdoor practice times posted
March 13, 2009  --   We have four time slots at the diamond in April. We will be playing some exhibition games at this time on the weekends so this should work out nicely. We have our last NSD practice next Monday, although we will probably add one more before April.

Full Schedule Released
March 18, 2009  --   To summarize the summer, the one team anyone on our team cares about playing: the Longhorns, we don't play until the very end of the season. Hopefully those games will mean something for both teams, but as for the rest of the summer it looks pretty busy. "A wise man once told me it's a simple game. You catch the ball, you throw the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes it rains --- think about that for a while".

Also, no one schedule any holidays this season during the playoffs (Hans, Norm). Go Flames.

Pitcher added
March 19, 2009  --   ESPN Deportes is reporting the Cardinals have come to terms with left-handed pitcher Curtis Smith on a free agent contract. Curtis hails  from Calgary and played for Vauxhall Baseball Academy. He has played on some good provincial teams, and currently is a sophomore with the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs. He is looking forward to drinking beers during post-games, which will usually come following him hopefully carving up some dudes.

This pretty much wraps up the off-season, with one more signing possibly out there. Stay tuned to the ticker for more updates.

A living legend steps down
March 23, 2009  --   In 2009, the discoverer of such things as fire, the round wheel, and the man who is suspected to have discovered gravity will be turning in his catchers gear for coaching gear (a cold beer). Yes ladies and gentlemen, the living legend Roy Hewko has reportedly hung them up for good this season, on only his third attempt at retirement in as many seasons. Roy has been a staple behind the dish for the Cardinals since before most current members were even born and is easily the Cardinals and possibly the FMBA career leader in most if not all non-pitching categories. As recently as 2003 Roy lead the league in home runs, the same year the Cards won their last FMBA title, and also played for the Cards over-38 team that won the '03 MSBL World Series in Arizona.

At an age where most men are easing into their final years at the workplace or thinking about retirement, Roy was playing arguably the most demanding position in sports and was still contributing, and amazingly was injury free. This lead to the now infamous Roy Hewko steroid scandal of 2007, however when test results came back negative his Cal Ripken like streak was put back in the Cards record book. Next post-game, buy him a beer.

Wedding
March 24, 2009  --   Congrats to Cards veteran Bryce McLean, who is getting married on May 2nd. Hopefully he doesn't tear or rupture anything prior to the wedding, such as at his first practice where he will surely treat each situation like Game 7 of the World Series.

Get Your Ice Cold Beer Here
March 31, 2009  --   Cards veteran Aren Nelson has volunteered for the beer cooler reigns this season, with Norm Varnel stepping down. At the press conference on Tuesday, Nelson told TSN that he will be putting an end to all stiffs who dont pay their tab. Whether or not he has to break any legs remains to be seen. Beer tickets will remain at $30 for 14 beer.

On a completely unrelated story, the Cardinals would like to encourage you to take a cab, or sleep at the diamond or a teammates's house if you've had too much to drink.

Sid Back on DL
April 7, 2009  --   Cards starting pitcher "El Sid" has been placed on the 15-Day DL with a back injury and may not be ready for Opening Day. Neither Sid nor his father Sid Senor were available for comment, but the injury may be related to the extreme daily weight placed on it by Sid's size 7 3/4" melon.

Breaking News: Beer now sold in 36 can cases!
April 14, 2009  --
Cardinal rookie infielder Richard Perkins, who previously has stated he no longer drinks, fell off the wagon tonight by setting a team record of shotgunning 7 beers. Once he started he couldn't stop; it was an impressive display, and many veterans who were present have penciled him in to win the coveted Cardinal Cup after the performance. Perkins girlfriend, a frequent reader of calgarycardinals.com, was unavilable for comment but according to Perkins would probably not be amused by the evening's events.

In another story, Nelly made an impressive start as beer cooler guy, purchasing little known "Boxer Beer", an Import Lager from Mountain Crest. The beers reportedly did not taste like absolute crap as suspected, and are certainly worth another 36 can investment. Also, you can apparently now buy beer in a 36 can case.

And finally, the above story about Perkins was recounted from an unreliable drunken source, so a retraction is pending. Kudos to him though for knocking in a rare albatross on the 18th hole Par 5 of post-practice fungo-golf on Friday, hitting the pop machine from the fairway.  Had it been a post-game it would certainly have warranted Cardinal Cup points.

Off-season spending
April 14, 2009  --
ESPN's Baseball Tonight has reported the Cards have opened up their pockets this year, signing the team up for four tournaments in the summer with a possible fifth in August. This has gone hand-in-hand with the lucrative free-agents contracts signed over the offseason, all to help the Cards make a playoff push and capture the elusive FMBA Championship. With the much-added depth Peter Gammons has picked the Cards to win it all in his FMBA preview, while lead analyst John Kruk has the Cards losing in the final.

Gammons also has reported the team is in talks with GM Glen Hansen regarding a possible contract extension, expected to be in the 3-year, $25M range. Meanwhile veteran players Norm Varnel and Josh Ritchie, who are entering the final year of their deals, are also in negotiations with the club about possible extensions. However their agent, Scott Boras, has refused to comment publicly on any contract talks.

Cards Pass FMBA Cap-Limit, luxery tax pending
April 19, 2009  --
The Cards have added two more players to their roster today, and are expected to be hit with the salary cap luxery tax. Team GM Glen Steinbrenner Hansen however was not concerned as the team's revenues from the beer fund should cover this.

Drew Carpenter, who has been on a hiatus from ball for a few years joins us as a utility guy but will see most of his PT in the OF. He played football at CB for the University of Calgary Dinos, opposite current Card Dave Holowaychuk who was a WR. Previously Drew played Babe Ruth with the Giants, and grew up playing with a lot of current members. With JB gone most of the summer coaching the JDawgs this gives us some depth in the OF.

Also joining us is pitcher Tahylor Law, who previously played for the Concordia University Irvine Eagles in California, as well as the PBA in Lethbridge. He played on the Calgary Dawgs in 2003-2004 as a starting pitcher and also grew up with a lot of current team members. In a former life he used to bartend, and he really likes the movies Little Big League, Frequency, and Airplane.

Finally it is unclear if pitcher Dave McElroy will join us as well because he might have availability issues, but would be a welcomed addition to the team. He played at the PBA alongside Tahylor before moving onto the Centenary College Gents in Louisinana. He was a starting pitcher for the Calgary Dawgs from 2003-2005, and has a dirty dirty changeup, while also thoroughly enjoying the movie Little Big League.

We now have an MLB size 26 man roster, but the availability of some veterans is in question. The league may be adding a 13th team and a second field for use this year, which would mean more league games. Stay tuned for more info on that.

Burlo added
April 21, 2009  --   The Cards added one more pitcher to their repertoire today, with Calgary veteran Jeff Burlo set to join the team. Jeff has most recently been a member of the Red Deer Riggers in recent years, but has played in the past on the junior Cardinals team and previously the Longhorns.  While being a crafty righty, he will help us out both on and off the field and with the rest of our staff. He also will be around for many a post-game, and brings us Cliff Clavin type knowledge about facts and trivia of baseball.

Fire started in Left
April 21, 2009  --   No Tulsa didnt lead off a game with a HR, rather some faggot members of the Transformers gang or whatever they are called now, thought it would be a good idea to start a grass fire just beyond left field with an entire baseball team as witnesses. The wind spread the fire faster than Norm finishes a beer card, luckily we called the fire department who were on hand to put it out. As for the rest of practice, no other excitement was to be had. Next practice is most likely Thursday at NSD.

Weekend Postponed
April 23, 2009  --   Those going to McLean's stag can now start drinking before 10am. New Work Bee date is May 2nd at 10 am. The Cardinals might have the least people there since that is also Bryce's wedding day. Also our games on Sunday have been postponed, possibly until next weekend.

Schedule Change
April 24, 2009  --
The Calgary Dinos summer program, a team most of us Calgary players have played on in the past, has joined our league as the 13th team. The schedule will be changing shortly, but we now play 24 games in league-play. Should be a good summer.

New Schedule Posted
April 28, 2009  --   We will have to take our visits to the Stampede in shifts this season, as we now play on six of the ten days and Sneak-a-Peek, and in total have a possible 18 games in July including a new league record 14 FMBA games. At least we know it is good beer drinking weather, the cooler could make record team profits this year, maybe a team bus is in the future. Has the season started yet?

Bryces Wedding Recap
May 3, 2009  --   The reception had an open bar, there was a dance floor, and the cab ride from Priddis to my house cost $60. Thats about all I can remember. Oh yea, the 1st baseman from the Mets was there. Good times.

Cards Shutout Stags
May 10, 2009  --
In an exhibition game with the Red Deer Stags, we showed up with 10 guys and won 5-0. Nelly and Shane allowed 4 hits combined, with only 2 fly balls on the day as the outfield didn't need to make the trip. Shaner also hit a 3 run bomb which put the game to bed, gaining an early HR lead on an absent HR hopeful rookie Justin Edgar. Guy would have probably got Cup points if he didn't completely botch an inning for us, and Norm struck out three times looking, proving why he is a pitcher - plus the Blackhawks won 4-2 over the Nucks so he might be on suicide watch. Next up is the D-Backs as we open FMBA play Sunday. Also the first team blowup nearly happened as we went over signs before the game, it was fantastic.

Cardinals Cup Points

15 points - Shaner - 1-3 HR 3RBI, 3IP 0R - making an early case for repeat Cardinal Cup winner
10 points - Nelly - 4IP, one ground ball made it to Tulsa in CF.
5 points - Drew A. - 2-4, hit the ball well

Cards Snake One from DBacks
May 10, 2009  --
This was a very close game until we scored 6 runs on 1 hit in the 6th inning. Blackie might be tested for HGH or roids soon from the FMBA as he has 2 bombs in 2 games and has provided our only extra base hits thus far. Our hitting needed some work, but the defense played well with the pitching solid as well. The Dbacks catcher threw out a couple guys, but failed to throw out Guy who looks poised to steal 130 bases this season ala Rickey Henderson. Finally there was another near blowup during the game between Roy and Hans, while a heated post game discussion about whether stealing up 9 runs in a tourney being good form was debated as well.

And, we decided that on Saturday July 18th, Hans will get the start on the hill vs. the Mets in one of those two games. It will mark his first appearance on the hill in 40 years in the FMBA.

Cardinal Cup Points

15 points - Shane Black. 2-3, 2B, HR, post game beer production also has picked up of late
10 points - Drew A. 2-4, key hit in the game to bust it open
5 points - Nuke 3IP, only 3 walks! pitched well

Alumni Game Announced
May 11, 2009  --   Its a ways down the road but on Saturday August 15th 2009 the Calgary Cardinals will host an alumni game with some of the many faces from past teams. It will take place at the Deerfoot field starting at 6pm, after which we'll have a BBQ. The early over/under line for the number of beers drank that night opened at 1,000 on most Vegas sports books.

Ah-OOOOOOOOOO Pack come up lame
May 16, 2009  --
With a short bench, only three pitchers, and Perkins first appearance behind the dish in 5 years we swept the Pack today. Game 1 started out as their new shortstop, possibly A-Rod or Jeter Im not sure, was chirping at Nelly for not cleanly fielding the ball he hit back to the mound, yet was still thrown out by 15 steps. So the next inning, A-Rod first dropped a ground ball then threw it almost over their dugout, pretty much costing them the game. We walked 13 times but looked pretty terrible only getting 6 hits. Nelly didnt allow a ball out of the infield until the 7th inning, but walked 6 himself.

Game 2 we fell down 4-0 early but Burlo crafted his way to 6 solid innings, not walking anyone while Shane came in and vultered the win. Jesse was the player of the day though as he nearly turned a triple play, missing the runner at 1st by a step, while also leaving the Pack on the field with an RBI single to give us the win. Im still not sure how we won this game, since we k'd 10 times and struggled at the dish but whatever the beer tasted excellent with two dubs. Of note, there seems to be an O-fer fraternity going on with some of the new guys, they should bring some form of Mushroom or Magic Flower for the Dukes Mario-like staff on Tuesday.

Cardinal Cup Points
Game #1
15 points - Chico 1-2, 2RBI stellar d,
10 points - Nelly CG, 6 BBs kept it interesting
5 points - Drew C. 1-2, key early hit
HM Guy and Breen who were our only other notable players

Game #2
15 points - Jesse 1-3, RBI near triple play
10 points - Burlo 6IP, changeup was solid
5 points - Chico 2-2, key double, scored winning run

Post-games called on account of weather
May 19, 2009  --
I never thought I would say this, but it was too cold to drink post-game beers tonight after we beat the Dukes 9-5. Bailey's and coffee would have hit the spot nicely though, as it was possibly -10C after the wind chill. Game highlights included Tulsa hitting an inside the park HR, Guy stealing third while being held on at 2-bag and Norm fielding a one hopper with his bare hand, which surprisingly didn't smash his frozen hand into 1000 pieces. Bryce also made his first appearance in 3 years without injuring himself while El Sid looks poised to be removed from the DL, making his first team function in 3 months. We also stole 8 bags on the night and walked 6 more times, setting a new world record of 38BBs through 5 games. Next up is the Gamecocks Friday where we hopefully see someone who throws over 65mph.

Cardinal Cup Points
15 points - Tulsa 2-3, 3R 4 RBI, HR
10 points - Guy 2-4 2SB,
5 points - Shane 2-3 2RBI, SB, broken bat single on 60mph fastball

On-field and off, Cards get Cocked
May 22, 2009  --
In a very fast game, the always well named Cocks threw their lefty who shoved it for them, k'ing 13 guys, 6 looking as we lost 5-0 tonight. Its good for us to see a good pitcher early in the year, hopefully we expand our zone a bit as 6 ks looking is a bit ridiculous. Rookie Curtis Smith took the hill for us and threw well, he has a dirty bender. The Cocks put the ball in play though and beat us straight up on the night. Since we are hitting like crap thus far some slump busting was needed so after the game, we all gathered round the campfire and listened to JB tell us stories about his many off-field escapades, and got piss-drunk cocked before some guys hit the Yardhouse to work out their demons. Next up is the Dinos next Saturday.

Cardinal Cup Points
15 points - Jeff Breen 1-2, 2B, BB, got to third base!
10 points - Curtis - 5IP, 7Ks,
5 points - Guy - 1-2
HM - Justin Edgar, lone player to not strike out on night

126!
May 31, 2009  --

We took on the Dinos today and looked good out of the gate, with the exception of the worst pregame infield ever. But after getting ahead, much like the fans watching the game we fell asleep for 4 innings and the Dinos made it interesting as we held on 8-6. A terribly sunburned and hungover Nuke allowed 2 hits in 4 IP, but the big guy tired, so Dave made his Cardinal debut and shook off the 3-year rust preserving the win. Eddie busted out hitting a HR while Guy had a solid day at the dish but a Guy-like day in Left. Chico added a bomb for good measure.

Game 2, the newly named El Whammy got the start and lasted all of 1/3 of an inning giving up 3 huge HRs as we fell behind 6-0; he then packed up his stuff and left after I think 4 people complained about sore necks. If you are reading this though Sid we came back the next inning with Chris and Breen hitting huge bombs to make it 6-5. Enter a pitching duel for the next 4 innings with Blizz throwing very well and being Maddux like fielding his position, as we ended up winning the game 8-7. It was a great day, everyone got in the game and contributed and our wins made the Dinos have a team meeting in left field following the games. But the real highlight was trying to calculate Sid's ERA, we called in some experts from NASA to figure it out, and it ended up only being 126.00. PS, 1 of the 2 Perkins now has a batting average.

Next up is the Horns on Monday, in a battle of which team has the funnier website.

Cardinal Cup Points

Game 1

15 points- Eddie 2-3 HR 3RBI, 2SB

10 points- Guy 3-4, 2SB

5 points- Nuke 4IP, 2H, 2R, 4BB, 2HBP,liked Longhorns cheering, and nearly decapatated one of their players chasing a foul ball

HM- Chico 1-3, 3R, HR, 2SB

Game 2

15 points- Blizz 4-2/3 of shutdown relief was key, 2H, 2BB, 1HBP

5 points-  Chris 1-4 huge HR, SB started us off in the 2nd

HM- Bryce 1-2 2B, RBI - hit the ball well on the day

Cards Hook Em Horns
June 1, 2009  --
In the fastest game in FMBA history, we beat the Horns tonight 3-1. We took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as we had 2 singles and 2 doubles on 6 pitches. We then shut it down as there was a cooler of post-game beers to be drank, plus Ted mowed us a tad. Before the game Curtis said he would shotgun a beer for each K and he ended up dealing 12 of them. He did drink twelve though and had one of Sid's scotch shots, he was feelin okay. Not much else happened except Guy continued his torrid baserunning and hitting while Perkins did not like being heckled. After the game, the old-timers opened up their broiler and we shared many hot dogs and stories about how to annoy teams in the league. Next up is the Outlaws in a week, we may hit the Vipers game on Saturday.

Cardinal Cup Points
15 points - Smitty, 7IP 5H, 12K
10 points - Guy 2-4, key steal of third
5 points - Blackie 2-4, 2B, RBI, cashed the game winning run

Stags punt Cards
June 1, 2009  --
The Cardinals got booted out of this tourney today with lots of time to reschedule something else - less than two weeks. The reason they gave was they couldnt run an 8 team tourney on two diamonds so they cut it down to 6 to utilize one diamond - Im glad this was thought of when the tournament was announced two months ago. Also since we are a "new" team they stuck with teams they have ties with. Since it is our teams 45th anniversary next season, 30 years older than theirs, plus the fact that two of our players actually were on their provincial team the last two years I will keep this in mind.

The league has an empty slot that Sunday so we'll see if we can get some games moved up, otherwise team party at Perkins house.

Roster Moves
June 8, 2009  --
The Cards have placed infielder Brett Bousquet on the 15-Day DL retroactive from sometime in April. Due to blowing up his knee last July at the Longhorns tourney while crossing first base (playing for the Redbirds), he never fully recovered and has been off any physical activity for the past three months. It is unclear whether he will be able to play at all this summer, but has been advised to take his time while he regains muscle in his knee. Let's drink a beer next post-game to a speedy recovery, or two or three or four.

The Cards have also been notified that pitcher Tahylor Law has retired from baseball at the tender age of 25. The Brett Favre-like "will he stay retired" talks will be sure to begin over the next few seasons, as ESPN has reportedly already been in contact with his agent.

Finally, the Cards have filed a missing person report with the City of Calgary Police Service on pitcher Jared Dickie. This is the second report filed in as many seasons on Dickie, who has thrown 3 innings for us in his career. If you see a person who fits his description, please contact us immediately.

City of Calgary: Garbagemen wanted from Cardinals
June 9, 2009  --
Without trying to get myself kicked off the team, let's just say that we really sucked this game. Im surprised we didnt get dimed, I wish we had so I could have drank more beer. The one stat that might throw up warning flags is the two Outlaws pitchers who threw a combined 4 hitter against us tonight have allowed 38 runs (only 37 were earned) in 15.2 innings coming into the game, with the lowest ERA being over 14.00. That and we have 9 players batting under .190 for the year with 2 at .000 (with more than 1 start). We should start a second franchise next year to send them, call them The Garbagemen, and place wagers on who will finish the year above the Mendoza line.

The one highlight was Burlo on the hill who somehow only allowed 1 run behind our defense tonight and didnt walk anyone again. Also, Chico has been named team MVP and has been given a blank cheque to fill in, as he apparantly accounts for 4-5 team runs per game, and 3 less errors, and we show up to play (hint, he was unavailable tonight). Next up we are having an intrasquad game on Sunday at 3pm at the field. Hopefully you are on Nellys team as he will probably dot a few guys for losing tonight to those guys.

15 points - Burlo, 4IP, 0ER, 3H, 3K, 0BB, will never be pulled with less than 100 pitches again
10 points -  Carp - 1-2, 2 runs, 2 meaningless SB, good hustle
5 points - Breen - 1-1, SB, run.
HM - Jesse, if he showed up on time he would start more.
HM - Guy - for the Garbagemen 1 and Garbagemen 2 reference

Cards win sandlot game
June 14, 2009  --
In a fun exhibition game with the D-Backs today, the batting order was generated by reverse position numbers and we may stick with it as we scored 14 runs in a 9 inning game. There were no official umpires and we batted 11 guys so we didnt keep stats, but it is worth mentioning that Bryce McLean (batting lead-off) went 3-3 with 2 huge doubles and a single, and Richard Perkins (in the 5 hole) had two hits including a massive bomb. Nelly got shelled, throwing on 1 days rest after walking the park for the Longhorns Friday, and may be relegated to coaching third all year. Norm pitched for their team as they needed some pitching and threw at Blizz, but then walked in a run and three players from our team told him they would suck his **** if he threw them a strike.

A funny side note was Carp mentioned before the game that apparently Acme reads our website frequently and were questioning why anyone would want to play with Nelly when calls out his own guys. That's an excellent point, perhaps they can also recommend which church to take up, and explain how all the sun from working on the farms thins their skin so much.

Also, the Cards have suspended P Jared Dickie for the year for practicing magic as he has pulled too many disappearing acts. The team also placed P El Whammy on the grievance list as he is obviously still crying from allowing 3 HR in one inning following his one off-season bullpen session. And lastly, OF Josh Ritchie has lost his starting position, which is easy to do when you don't show up and bat .150 when you do.

Next up is BP on Wednesday, then we're off to Saskatoon Friday.

Tourney Sched's
June 15, 2009  --
Here are the teams we are playing at our upcoming tourneys:
At the Saskatoon tourney we play the Kindersley Raiders, who are in second in their league. If we win we go into a pool with the Marysburg Royals and the Saskatoon Outlaws, both of whom are usually in the running to represent Saskabush at AA Westerns. With all the new teams, plus the hotel we are staying at being rated 26th out of 31 in Saskatoon, we will be in for a challenge.

At the Ft. Sask tourney we play the defending AAA Provincial Champs Ft. Sask A's, Bruce-K's 2008 team the Edmonton Angels, and the St. Albert Tabbies (Junior Tigers), all of whom play in the Sunburst League. We will be in tough to repeat last year's performance at the Hotel Karaoke Bar, but we will give it our best shot.

Then at the Longhorns tourney we are in a pool with the Ft. Sask A's, and the Red Deer Stags. We might actually not be the team that the Longhorns heckle during the games as they might have it in for Ft. Sask, but I wouldnt bet on it. At least we can count on us drinking the most beers per game played. If we ever played in more than 1 day at this it wouldnt even be close.

El Whammy recalled
June 18, 2009  --
El Whammy has been taken off the grievance list, and will be making the trip to Saskabush, coming off one of his frequent three week hiatus from baseball. No word on how many HR he will allow this weekend - stay tuned to the ticker for more updates. McElroy is also making the trip meaning we will have 16 dudes, probably more than any of the teams who are actually from there. Cards Alumni Gump is also making the trip from Regina to coach first, where the odds of him getting completely nude in the dugout at some point has opened at 3-1 odds. That's a sure bet, you should triple up before Vegas takes that one of the board.

Two Cardinals Nearly Killed On and Off Field
June 21, 2009  --
There were many write-up quality events that took place this past weekend in a fun Saskatoon tourney. The #1 item discussed in everyone’s car ride home, and surely every other teams was Cards XXX star Dick Porkins rounding third, getting hit by a sniper from the beer gardens and face planting on the way home to the laughter of pretty much everyone watching– it was excellent, if only there was a camera. The second took place when nothing good ever happens - at 4:30am, as a group of street smart Cardinals commented to a couple native Saskatoononians (who clearly had just got in a scrap), “looks like you guys had a great night”. To quote Ron Burgandy, things really escalated quickly as one of them yelled he was going to kill them, and immediately proceeded to scale onto our second story balcony, pulled a knife on Blizz before Perkins pulled out a bat. Rodney, who is now referred to as Sally for his on and off field performances, ran into his room and locked the doors leaving three Cards outside. The guy, who may have been a ninja when not on gasoline, flipped over the balcony railing (again we were on the second floor), landed perfectly on his feet before walking away.

To sum up the rest of the off-field stuff: I really thought that we were playing at the Lac La Biche tourney during Pow-Wow Days. Rodney, who was looking for a slump buster at the Pat Saturday night, apparently doesn’t ever want to get a hit this year as he could have taken just about anyone that night. Guy was helping him, who mentioned the word “standards”, making me wonder if these guys know what a slump buster even is. Im surprised MLB players aren’t flying slumping players into this bar daily to work their way out of them. A girl who was crippled with two crutches made my top-10 list that night, and there was more than 300 people there. And also, our hotel was just off the road to a Compton like neighborhood, and one of the Outlaws players asked if we were stupid for staying there, it was funny.

Now to the games. To start out we played Kindersley at 9am, I think they were trying to get into the loser bracket as we won 15-2, Burlo threw another gem although he allowed a HR nearly off the Hells Angels Biker Bar. Breen and Trent hit well and Norm swung at a ball that was pitched 45 feet. This game got us into the winners bracket where we were put into pools. We next faced the Marysburg Royals who were in first in their league. Guy lost three cans of corn in the sun even though it was kind of cloudy, which was 3 of their 4 hits – Nelly threw his best game of the year. Their coach told the umpire that we were good but they should be beating us, which was good for a chuckle. Everyone got a hit except Sunshine Prince as we cranked the ball around the park. We ended the day with a 7pm game, our third of the day against the Saskatoon Outlaws. They threw a pretty good pitcher against us, and the shadows made it tough to pick up. They only got five hits but came at key times as we allowed 9 guys to get on for free. We couldn’t get a big knock to bust it open, but got beat by a good team who were somehow 3 games behind the Royals. I should mention that the home umpire in this game was a complete train wreck, as he threatened to leave the park due to the fans heckling and he may have even started to cry. The fans were fantastic as we had a good crowd in this one.

Sunday got rained out so we got a three way split for first place in the tourney, a good showing in our first trip there, Im sure we will be back there next year. Next up is the Diamondbacks on Thursday before we hit Fort Sask next weekend.

Cardinal Cup Points
Game 1
15 points – Burlo, threw strikes, but did you expect anything else? Team he was facing was questionable
10 points – Breen 2-2, 4RBI, 3BBs
5 points – Trent 2-3, nearly killed his entire family

Game 2
15 points – Nelly, threw well
10 points – Eddie, 2-3, got the cranking started
5 points – Perkins, 2-2, lost his pride
HM – Ambach – HR, called a great game

Game 3
15 points – Shaner, hit well
10 points – Ambach, talked shit to fans
5 points – Chico, lone other RBI

Baseball is totally awesome!
June 26, 2009  --
Oh what a beautiful day. Its too bad there had to be a final score in tonights games, because we were all winners out there! The Cards played their guts out and the motto of fair play was instilled in our hearts this evening. The final score was irrelevant because we won where it counts: in the community. We didnt get that one call to turn the tides, but we respected the umpire and our opponent which makes us winners in my books. The Diamondbacks meanwhile look poised to take the FMBA title and there was no shame in losing to a superior team. After the game, we got ice cream and slurpees from the parents and dreamed of lollipops and rainbows. Three cheers guys - hip hip hooray, hip hip hooray, hip hip hooray! Yeah baseball!!!!!!!!!!!!

p.s. sleepover in Ft. Sask on Saturday, no cooties allowed though.

Hustle Points
15 points - Eddie - we dont keep stats but had a heart of gold out there
10 points - Shaner - smiled during one at bat even when down which is what matters most
5 points - Dave H - looked totally tubular out there dude

Cards play well, come up short in Ft. Sask final
June 28, 2009  --
We started out the annual Ft Sask tourney against the Tabbies (St. Albert Junior Tigers). After complaining about our pitchers not throwing strikes last week, Nelly walked five in the first three innings. However the Tabbies literally hit 2 balls past 90 feet all day so he threw a three hit shutout. Not much happened in this one as their pitcher stopped throwing fastballs in the first inning after we hammered a few runs. Game two we faced the Edmonton Angels, where Burlo was off his game a bit having to throw more than his usual 6 pitches per inning a few times. Rodney just about got a hit but the second basemen came out of nowhere to rob him, pushing him to 0-19.

We faced Ft. Sask the next two games. In game one Norm threw his best game of the year as they didn't hit him except for the 3B who hit a very large bomb. We made a couple errors that hurt us, but their pitcher might not have thrown a ball that went over any white portion of the plate just black making it tough to do anything. The next game they threw his younger brother who had his arm go completely numb during the third inning which might be bad, so yet another good pitcher relieved. Curtis didn't have his best stuff but he threw well enough to win, but we again made a couple mistakes. The difference on the day really was their defense making all the plays, which is probably why they won AAA provincials last year. Also in this game, Nelly tried a slip and slide manoeuver while sliding into home as a courtesy runner.

It was good to see three of the best pitchers in the province, and on that note we now will probably face 2 knuckleballers in a row. On a another note, the Karaoke Bar closed at 9pm so we went to BP's and took home the Name That Tune title on Saturday, with Dave being a legend. Burlo and Shane were the two drunkest as they had a bottle of Drambuie. Rodney coached first on Sunday, which is the closest he has been there all year, I think he even touched it a couple times. Lastly, there were no team blow-ups and it was a real fun weekend. I dont always drink beer, but when I do, it's Boxer.

Beer cooler polished
July 3, 2009  --
We showed up to play the Daisy Dukes, however they only had 8 guys and then left at 6:31 so we decided to upgrade the competition and play an intrasquad game as we had 20 guys. Nelly was a little afraid when he only had 11 guys there by 5:30, but then looked at the zero in their dugout and calmed down - Im pretty sure they may fold next year. Rodney had a hit in this game off Shane, then started walkin around like he owned the place. He is now 1-25 including exhibition games but is heating up.

I dont remember what else happened because we finished the beer cooler. Next up is the Dust Devils Saturday where we will try to start a winning streak. Ooooh look, shiny red ball!

Cards split with Dusties
July 5, 2009  --
Game one can be summarized by saying Curtis was hungover and pitched crappy, whereas Nelly was sober and had no excuse for sucking. "Throw a strike" was yelled often by our team, other than those two everyone played okay. For future reference, Nelly is not allowed to throw in relief anymore, or against the Dust Devils ever again as he may not have thrown a fastball for a strike against them the past three seasons. If we were to have brought in anyone else to relieve that game, we would have won, way to go Nelly you doochbag. Also, Curtis left the field after being pulled which was amusing to no one.

In game two we played Burlo ball, meaning there were no walks issued and surprise we won. We had a record low 10 players for this one due to a wedding, but had enough in the tank to pull out a win.Hewko showed up at the end of this game and was in a rare good mood, and then he got tanked while chirping at the Pirates and Longhorns, it was borderline inappropriate. When asked about some off field incident that happened two seasons ago, Hewko replied "How should I know I've been gassed the past ten years", it might be the funniest thing ever said.

Next up we play the Gamecocks on Wednesday where we will attempt to finish off a full cooler for the third game in a row.

Cardinal Cup Points

Game 1
15 points - Dave H - 3-3, on base all 5 times, and the red cleats really tie the uniform together
10 points - Guy - 3-4, 2 more SB's, needs to mix in a game with 7 SBs to have a chance for 40
5 points - Breen - 2-2, should have been higher in order in this one
HM - Ambach for getting tossed when the game was over (what does that do?)

Game 2
15 points -  Ambach - 2-2, came back with a good approach, although didnt stick around for post-games
10 points - Burlo - 7IP, CG, can you teach me how to throw strikes Burlo?
5 points - Shane - played SS and did not show up drunk, wore his cup until 11 pm that night while drinking in uniform

Slo-Pitch team reaches low point, switch to lower division pending
July 8, 2009  --
Remember when we were talking about playing in provincials? I would be happy with just qualifying for the FMBA playoffs at this point. Tonight we faced our one nemesis, a pitcher who threw above 75mph for strikes and we surprisingly got shutout again, its like our starting 9 of guys who played in or are playing in college had never seen this unprecedented velocity before. I know I was still a little down from the Wacko Jacko funeral so it was understandable that we got 10 runned in 5 innings; the one highlight was the prayers that this game got postponed due to rain. Next up we play the Stags Saturday, then Ft. Sask again, and 95% chance of a day off on Sunday unless we find 9 new players who actually want to be there to win instead of to sulk in their own suckiness.

The "I was the best player on an 8th place men's league team Award" Points

15 points - The two guys from the Mets who were throwing a bullpen during the 20-minute rain delay of our game
10 points - Jesse for scorekeeping a fine game
5 points - Drew C, drank 2 beers during the 20-minute rain delay which impressed management

Cards win Longhorns tourney
July 12, 2009  --

With a relatively short bench during Stampede week, the Cards showed up mentally to play. Game 1 against the Stags Burlo kept us right there against their ace, with two big knocks for the Stags being the difference. We did leave a few guys on base and didnt pull through to bust this open, but still only lost 5-3 in a good game. Needing an outfielder before the game due to a couple alarm clock issues, Blizz had to play right field and has now become a starter in our lineup going 2-2 with a huge bomb. Guy also hit a bomb in this one.

Game two we were in tough against pitching heavy Ft. Sask. Nelly shoved it for a while, but they stayed in the game, and came through to tie it up in the bottom of 7. This is where past Cards teams would fold the tent and quit, but Curtis in relief kept us there until we finally got the one knock to score in the top of the tenth, pulling out a 4-3 win. Despite playing ten innings this was a fast game, and their guy threw the Jack Morris special, throwing all ten and keeping us in check for the most part. This win got us in the semi's Sunday, the first time we have played on Sunday in the past 6 seasons at this tourney.

We faced the Redbirds in the semis who had just boatraced Oyen and the Longies, and we were up against the world famous Jim Lawson throwing for them. However we had our own ace with Curtis absolutely shoving it, completely dominating to give us a 4-0 victory. The wind was blowing 800mph in from left, which robbed a few of our guys of extras or even a bomb or two, but we came through with clutch line drive hits when it mattered most. Shaner pulled his hammy in this game and is probably on the shelf for a while, good thing we keep more than 9 players on our roster.

In the final we played the Stags again. We hit the ball well in this game, giving Nelly a season high 9 runs. On zero days rest, Nelly tried being a power pitcher early, but they were hitting his 79mph fastballs for singles. So he morphed into pitching coach Burlo, serving up BP fastballs and changing speeds on his fastball with the odd 60 mph curves and 55 mph changeups as the Stags rolled over for easy outs. When the game was over, we shook hands, took our trophy and calmly drank beers, I dont think anyone even cheered - it was like we'd done it 1,000 times before. Our tourney MVP would have to go to Curtis for throwing in 3 games and showing what he and our team can do when we are dialed in. Congrats to the Longhorns on running another successful tourney and representing our league well.

Great weekend boys, let's bring the same intensity level Wednesday against the Horns and then our starters can take the weekend off against the intramural Mets.

Cardinal Cup Points
Game 1
15 points - Blizz, 2-2, hit the ball hard, ate a triple cheeseburger at the end of the night
10 points - Breen (aka Billy Leznar), 1-1 on base all 4 times did his job out there
5 points - Burlo, no coin flip required, we know what we get from him every game: a chance to win

Game 2
15 points - Nelly, should have had the W if he could ever strike anyone out
10 points - Curtis - comes in to relief for second game in a row, and was throwing gas
5 points - Guy, 2-3 - got picked off at first, tourneys just arent good for him

Game 3
15 points - Curtis, helluva game, was in total control as his fastball was clearly faster than they'd seen all year
10 points - McKee, shows up for his 7th game of year, and puts on a baseball clinic, hit Redbirds well
5 points - Chico - had a key double, SB, and showed up on time

Game 4
15 points - Edgar - 3-4, had a productive day
10 points - Blizz - 3-4, the 100 pregame flyballs did not help at all
5 points - Dave, hit well in this one

Super Special Fantastic Bonus Cup Points
15 points - Carter Edie of Longhorns for purchasing Boxer Beer after tourney win.

Cards consistency non-existant
July 15, 2009  --
The Horns threw O'Doyle against us tonight who made us look awful, as we failed to show up to a league game again. It was a shocking, no wait predictable let-down following a good tournament showing. Now we play the Mets Saturday who as I know they read this website will be looking for motivation. Well Mets, I have nothing - we are very beatable. Guys on our team think that if we dont put out our "A" lineup, which I have yet to see by the way, that we are throwing the game. Frustrating.

Rodney got a real game hit tonight and was stoked. After the game during fungo golf Blizz nailed Carp with a ball right off his belt buckle. Oh Blizz. Also, we added a couple guys to the team with Nate and John Higgins, who should fill in a few holes as we start to lose guys at the end of the year to holidays and injuries.

Cardinal Cup Points

15 points - Blizz - 1-2, 2B, scored our lone run, should have yelled "fore"
10 points - Ambach - 2-3, signs of life at the plate following massive slump
5 points - Rodney - 1-1, gets on the scoreboard with one

Cards Swab the Deck
July 18, 2009  --
'Bout 7 turns o'yer hourglass ago we swabbed the deck with th' Mets we did, our pitchers didnt keel haul one guy on th' tide nor did we make an error. Ahoy, our achilles heel gar, thy hittin' managed 18 runs a pence for an old man at o' sea, although th' Mets D an' th' one guy`s inability t' throw strikes matee walked them th' plank as we managed 12 runs in one innin' on th' strength o' 4 hits wi' only one error made. Aye, me parrot concurs th' Mets moved way up in th' Cards scrawlins' tho wi' a solid post-game showin' an' some timely comments durin' th' Chefs-Wolfpack games (aye we stuck around t' watch both). Where can I find a bottle o'rum ye scallywags?

Divey spoils t' all yer matees points

Gunz Beat Cards
July 19, 2009  --
We just lost our first two games to the Gunz in the past 6 seasons - they showed up with their whole team, they played intense and really wanted these games, whereas only ten of us made it out at all. We also got no-hit in game 2, but I'm not going to write about the games, rather thank the guys who showed up today. If we could get the same commitment from others who make playing baseball seem equal to doing the laundry or cleaning the dishes, we might actually start winning games instead of having Nelly playing third for the first time since he was 17, Burlo play SS after having pitched in Game 1, and Shane DHing with a torn hammy.

Cardinal Cup Points
Game 1
15 points - Eddie 3-4, HR,
10 points - Beadle - 2 runs
5 points - Burlo - ran out of gas
HM Rodney for despite striking out 4 times, making a error, was still the first guy to leave the park after the game without helping do the field

Game 2
15 points - Shane 0-1, showed up to all four games this weekend despite having a torn hamstring and knowing he probably won't play, and while having a wife and kid and a 60 hour a week job. And he tells Nelly he wants to start Game 2 on the hill, where is that want to win from anyone else?
10 points - Norm 0-1, hasn't played as much as he wanted, has been given every reason to miss games when he knows he isn't playing, yet shows up to every single game and is reliable and is a positive team leader.
5 points - Mike 0-2, shows up to every game at the field, wants to be there just for the love of the game and to watch us play despite us playing horrible lately, and didn't say one thing about playing time when he hadn't played in more than a month and had only three appearances before this weekend.

Outlaws Fight for Win
July 22, 2009  --
Not much to say here, the Outlaws put the ball in play, had some key hits and fought back to win 15-14 after being down early. Tough one boys, in the end the worst thing that happened is we just lost a men's league baseball game, if we were better we wouldn't be paying to play. Next up is the Pirates on Sunday, then some more Pirates Wednesday and Friday, then some time off.

Cup Points
15 points - Ambach, was told he needed to go 4-4 for us to win and he didn't disappoint, except we still lost
10 points - Dave 2-3, hit the ball well
5 points - Blizz - 2-3, keeps earning more PT
HM - Mr. Sunshine on your god damn shoulders John Denver

Cards GFY
July 26, 2009  --
In Game 1, Sid pitched a dandy, Guy hit the longest HR in FMBA history, Shane added another, and Nelly dropped a routine fly ball in CF as we hammered the Pirates. In Game 2 we were up 6-1, then we melted down and lost 11-10. Our pitching and defense were pretty craptastic in this one as Norm and Nelly entered the downside of their careers, and we also botched a few more routine plays. We did however drink another full cooler of beer plus we scouted our next opponent Acme who we play Wednesday. If we can hold them to under 20 runs and less than 4 home runs I will consider it a victory as we might pay them to give us hitting lessons this off-season.

We only had 10 players tell Nelly to GFY on the day and only three threw jerseys at him, so it felt like a sweep. There were a few times when I really thought we should have bunted, but we need a few more guys to quit to get some others more PT so we didnt call them today.

"Gold belts in 2010 = Cardinals batting average above .350" points
Game 1
15 points - Guy 2-3, was a fantasy stud on the day with bunt single, longest HR ever, sac fly, SB, 3 RBI
10 points - El Whammy, 6IP, kept Chefs in check
5 points - Chico 2-4, 2RBI,

Game 2
15 points - Trent 2-4, hit well
10 points - Blizz 3 runs
5 points - Breen 2-4, on base

AAA Provincial Schedule Release
July 27, 2009  --   Instead of the possibility of playing only 2 games we are now guaranteed 6 games for AAA Provincials which is pretty solid. They start next Monday here in Calgary vs the Redbirds, then in Red Deer vs the rest of the province on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Should be good times.

Cards GFY some more
July 30, 2009  --
A win is a win, we played a team that resembled Acme minus a few of their starter's and won easily. We played solid D on the night, hit when we needed against a guy we didn't even know pitched, and played pretty well, hip hip hooray! Chico was the player of the day with a big knock and a couple great plays at short, while Nelly has optimism that he can pitch well into his 50's as he really worked on the BP fastball, knuckleball and crap curveball today. Next up is these guys again Friday when we will also be short many players. Not much to say except go eff yourself.

Bud Light Lime R.I.P. points
15 points - Chico, 1-3 HR 2RBI
10 points - Nelly, CG, at age 27 is learning how to pitch
5 points - Tully, 1-2, 2 runs on base three times

Fake team shows up, can't be Cards
August 1, 2009  --
Leave it to the last game of the FMBA season when we have the least amount of guys there for us to finally hit the crap out of the ball. It was fun times being the team boat-racing someone for a change as both teams were short players but we still faced one of their better guys. Carp played like a man possessed going 3-4 with a walk in his last game of the '09 season for the Cards. But others contributed with Blizz also going 3-4, Nelly going 1-1 with 3 walks and Trent playing a solid 1B and hammering balls. McElroy threw a gem in relief after Perk figured it out in his last of three innings while our D didn't make one error. Also, Hans stuck around til past 11 for post-game beers, but don't tell his wife. Oh yeah, and we scored in every inning except the one we tried bunting in.

Now for a few days off and we're back at it for provincials Monday against the Redbirds.

Cardinal Cup points
15 points - Carp
10 points -  McElroy
5 points - Burlo
HM, everyone on the team today
