ClubSportEdinburgh sign the Pledge
ClubSportEdinburgh became the first Edinburgh sports organisation to sign up for the new Access to Sport and Culture Pledge.
Chairman Douglas Adamson announced that "Sport is an integral part of community spirit and it's rich history is a major influence in our shared popular culture. By signing up to The Pledge local sports clubs will be able to contribute and make connections with other groups in ways that may never have been considered in the past. The Pledge is a commitment to Edinburgh and sports clubs will be looking forward to working with other groups to help improve participation and help make everyone in Edinburgh active and involved in their city community."
ClubSportEdinburgh pledged to encourage clubs to come together and share resources with both fellow sports clubs and organisations within the arts, theatrical and cultural communities across Edinburgh.
Councillor Deidre Brock, Culture and Leisure Convenor, also added "The Pledge is an excellent way of showing our shared commitment to making sport and culture as accessible as possible for all Edinburgh residents. We've already had some very positive feedback with a number of organisations signing up and I'm sure we'll see even more coming on board in the coming weeks."
Four city clubs, Edinburgh Wolves American Football, Portobello Rugby Club, Craiglockhart Tennis Club and Polonia Phoenix Basketball, have already followed their lead and signed up and it is hoped many other city clubs will link in to this exciting new initiative.
All clubs and organisations who sign up will be invited to the first ASC Conference that will be held on 17th March 2010 and will offer an excellent opportunities to network with like minded groups and share good practice.
WHAT IS THE PLEDGE?
Throughout 2008, the City of Edinburgh Council and partners consulted widely with organisations, partnerships, clubs, groups and residents across the city to explore ways to increase access to arts, sport and physical activity. The consultation highlighted many common issues and challenges and showed that there are many opportunities to increase such access. The vision is that organisations will pledge to take actions to improve access to arts, sports and physical activities. This document shows how organisations and clubs can pledge to improve access by building on existing good practice, making the most of opportunities and meeting current and future challenges. By signing the pledge organisations will make a strong and lasting shared commitment to work together to continue to improve access, increase membership and raise their profile with other key partners in the city.
WHY MAKE THE PLEDGE?
• The opportunity to create links with other partners and like minded organisations
• A platform to promote your activities by area and activity
• An opportunity to identify and engage with Neighbourhood Partnerships
• Access to information regarding subsidies, smart cards, transport etc
• Invitations to participate in annual conferences and other potential networking opportunities
WHO CAN SIGN THE PLEDGE?
The pledge is for any organisation that provides arts, sport or physical activity in Edinburgh. This includes public, voluntary and commercial organisations, partnerships, agencies, companies, clubs and groups. These organisations already work to provide high quality activities. By signing the pledge, they recognise that they can work collectively to increase participation.
WHAT DOES THE PLEDGE INVOLVE?
The pledge provides a framework for organisations to set out activities to improve the impact of their work on access to and participation in arts, sport and physical activity. Each organisation that signs the pledge will specify actions that it will take under each relevant theme. Organisations will specify a set of actions that can lead to real change and improvement in their ways of working. Activities will depend on the size and nature of the organisation, and what they are already doing.
DELIVERING THE PLEDGE
Pledge partners will be asked to report progress and to renew their pledge every year. The City of Edinburgh Council will collate all pledges to produce a detailed description of actions across the city, update this each year and make it available to all pledge partners. It will also be available on a dedicated webpage. There will be an annual conference to review progress, share experiences
and best practice. The City of Edinburgh Council will act as the lead partner organising, hosting and running the annual event.
THE PLEDGE
“We pledge to improve the quality of life and life chances for all people in Edinburgh through increased access to cultural and sporting activities”
by:
• developing and promoting joint working;
• improving the quality and dissemination of information;

Club Resource Pack
DOWNLOAD PACK
Sports clubs have been thriving in Edinburgh for centuries and will hopefully continue to do so. Clubs play a key role in encouraging sports participation and developing young performers through age-group structures and on up to international standard. With these roles come responsibilities and the need to ensure that clubs are providing quality, safe and enjoyable experiences for their members.
You are not alone in facing these hurdles, and there is a lot of help out there for you to access.
ClubSportEdinburgh has condensed the best of this help in to its own resource pack, which is accessible free of charge on the above link.
The pack aims to:
a) provide a generic resource for sports clubs that wish to improve. It is of particular relevance to clubs whose National Governing Bodies (NGB) does not have a sport-specific club development manual.
b) highlight the main issues that clubs need to be aware of when working with children and young people and support that work by providing resources to assist them.
The pack is arranged in eight sections:
1. Duty of Care and Child Protection
2. Coaching and Playing Programme
3. Sports Equity and Ethics
4. Club Management
5. Good Practice – Volunteer Management
6. Contacts – useful contacts and websites for additional support
7. Funding Opportunities for Clubs
8. Templates - clubs can use these to assist the development of their policy, procedures and practices.
You may find that your club needs some help in just one or two of those areas, or feels the need to completely review its long term aims, and begin the process of creating a sustainable plan for the future.
Regardless of the level of help required, the pack has proved a most useful tool to many clubs in the city, and we recommend it to you.

Parks & Open Space Public Consultation
City clubs are invited to share their views on Edinburgh's Parks and Open spaces.
The City of Edinburgh Council is preparing an open space strategy that will set standards of provision across the city and show where these are still to be met. This will help set priorities for change in open space over the next five years. The strategy will be accompanied by 12 action plans, one for each neighbourhood partnership area.
As a first step before the strategy and action plans are prepared, the Council has mapped all significant open spaces in the city and gathered basic information on them. This includes playing fields, tennis courts, bowling greens and golf courses. This information is set out in a draft open space audit.
The draft open space audit is available to view in Council libraries or online here Paper copies can be purchased from the Planning Reception at Waverley Court, 4 East Market Street.
The draft audit will be discussed at public workshops during June and July 2009. The list of public workshops and other events we will be attending with an information stand are below. The end date for comments on the draft audit is 10 July 2009.
We are interested in which open spaces and outdoor sports facilities clubs use, how they use them and what they think of their quality. Tell us what you think by completing our online open space questionnaire.
The final audit will be published in October 2009. The information gathered at this stage will be used to inform the preparation of the draft strategy and action plans. There will be a second public consultation on the draft strategy and action plans at the start of 2010.
If you have any questions or would like to request more copies of the questionnaire, please contact us on 0131 469 3598, or by writing to Finlay Martin, Local Planning Policy, G1 Waverley Court, 4 East Market Street, Edinburgh, EH8 8BG or email here
