    Crimsons refuse to yield
JHS wins regional baseball title against Bethalto, 7-1

    BY BRIAN WEBSTER
SPRINGFIELD — The last time Jacksonville High baseball won a regional title, “American Pie” was burning up the charts. Not the movie.

    The song.

That was a long, long time ago — 1972, to be exact.

But Saturday, in the championship game of the Springfield Class AA Regional, the Crimsons said “bye, bye” to 35 years of postseason failure. Junior lefty Quinton Miller pitched a three-hitter and senior Levi Graham whacked his second two-run homer in as many games as Jacksonville snuffed Bethalto Civic Memorial, 7-1, at Robin Roberts Stadium.

“It’s amazing, just an amazing feeling,” said Quinton Miller, who struck out six and walked two in the biggest start of his career so far. “Words can’t describe it.”

JHS skipper P.J. Moore said he and his players knew all along that a regional championship plaque was within their grasp, but they kept their minds on the task at hand.

“That was a team goal from the start of the season,” said Moore. “But we didn’t think about it in those terms until two nights ago. Our guys are pretty much focused to stay in the present.”

The Crimsons, now 22-12, await either Quincy Notre Dame or Chatham Glenwood for the Class AA sectional semifinals, which also will be played at Robin Roberts Stadium, 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. QND and Glenwood were rained out at the Jerseyville Regional, and will play their game on Monday at 10 a.m.

On paper, Saturday’s game looked like a contrast of styles. Bethalto (24-9), the No. 4 seed in the sectional complex, had gotten by mostly on its stellar pitching and airtight defense, with just enough hitting. Jacksonville, the No. 9 seed, had been outslugging its opponents while making do with a seemingly patchwork pitching staff. The Crimsons had won their previous three games by scores of 14-13, 12-8 and 12-10 (in 12 innings).

The Eagles started one of their aces Saturday, in Tory Doerr, who’d compiled a record of 7-3 with a microscopic 1.35 ERA. Jacksonville went with Q. Miller, whose 5-5 record and 4.58 ERA looked shaky, especially considering that the junior had pitched nearly six innings of relief in Wednesday’s win over Springfield High.

Numbers like that gave Bethalto head coach Gary Bruening plenty of optimism.

“Coming up here, we felt that we probably had the edge,” Bruening said. “We felt that we were the better team, but today we weren’t. They (the Crimsons) impressed us. They played well. We knew they’d swing the bats really well, but defensively, they play well, too.”

Working with an assortment of curves and change-ups, Q. Miller befuddled the Eagle hitters all afternoon.

“I was excited because I wanted the ball,” Q. Miller said. “I looked forward to coming out against this team. I saw them play (Wednesday) and I wanted to see how I’d do against them.”

Two of Bethalto’s three hits came in the first inning, but Q. Miller got Paul Lile on a called third strike to end the threat.

The Crimson pitcher then retired the next seven hitters he faced. Bethalto’s Devin Caldwell led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a walk, but got erased on a double play — one of two that JHS shortstop Chaser Todd started Saturday.

The Eagles got their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. With two out, Sam Johns scored from third when JHS third baseman Alex Miller momentarily bobbled a grounder by Jesse Sitze and threw to first a split second too late to get the out. That’s how close Q. Miller came to a shutout.

He retired the last seven batters he faced after that.

“I don’t know what (Q. Miller) throws,” said Bruening. “It doesn’t look like he throws much, but obviously, he does a great job. He held us to three hits and we usually hit the ball decently. He was very tough on us. He kept us off-balance. I was very impressed with him.”

Moore played a hunch when he told Q. Miller on Thursday that he wanted to start him in the regional championship game. Statistics don’t reveal the intangibles that a head coach can discover over the course of the season.

“Quinton Miller is a bulldog on the mound,” said Moore. “He pitched with a lot of conviction today. He was able to get out front in the count and keep their batters off-stride. He’s tremendous. I can’t say enough good things about Quinton.”

Levi Graham’s third-inning blast followed a gritty, two-out walk by Todd, who battled back from a one-ball, two-strike count to prolong the inning. It was an ominous sign for the pitching-rich Bethalto squad.

“Tory (Doerr) made one bad pitch early in the game, and it was 2-0,” said Bruening. “Actually, he made a mistake when he walked (Todd) with two outs. We had him down in the count, one-and-two, and (Doerr) let him off the hook.”

Graham then belted a high drive way over the left-center field wall.

“It was just right there,” said Graham of the pitch he hit. “I’d missed a pitch right before that. I just got lucky. I got a pitch to hit and hit it out of here.”

From that point on, Bethalto never resembled the higher-seeded team. And that was Moore’s plan all along.

“Levi’s homer was the voltage of the game,” Moore said. “I told our guys that we needed to jump out on an unknown opponent and let them try to adjust to us. We did just that and we kept it going.”

The Crimsons broke the game open with a five-run fifth. Adam Bruner, batting in the No. 8 slot, lifted a fly ball that carried toward the right field line that Eagles outfielder Chris Campbell simply dropped. Bruner wound up at second base on the error. Junior J.T. Rowe then drew a walk, and Todd followed with a well-executed bunt single, loading the bases with no outs for the heart of Jacksonville’s order: Levi Graham, Ben Wagner and Buddy Sexton.

Doerr nicked Graham with a pitch, automatically bringing in one run, making it a 3-0 game. Graham had hoped to get a swing.

“I was ready to get up there and bat,” said Graham. “There’s no doubt about that. But hey, it’s an RBI and a run, so I’ll take it.”

Wagner followed with a hot liner up the middle that ricocheted off the pitcher’s glove and rolled to a stop in short center field. It had the trajectory of a single, but Wagner turned the hit into a two-run double with his legs. 5-0, Crimsons.

“Me and Ben have been the one-two punch all year,” said Levi Graham. “I knew he was going to do it, and we’ve got Sexton behind him. With guys like that, it’s tough not to score runs with no outs.”

Sexton and Alex Miller drove in Jacksonville’s sixth and seventh runs on a sacrifice fly and an infield RBI single, respectively.

“We started off the fifth with a guy who hasn’t had an error in the outfield all year dropping a fly ball,” said Bruening. “Then there was a walk and an infield hit, then we hit a batter and it all kind of fell apart after that. The floodgates opened up.”

Bethalto’s Sam Johns — the team’s top power hitter and arguably its best pitcher — came on in relief of Doerr in the fifth and kept the Crimsons from doing any more damage. He struck out three, walked one and allowed just two hits in two innings in his first action since returning from a bout with mononucleosis.

“I thought Johns came in and did a great job,” Bruening said. “He’s coming back from mono and just got released on Monday.”
