Bobby Thomson Field Officially Opened By The Man Himself!
December 6, 2003  --   The Edinburgh Diamond Devils were honoured to host Scottish-born baseball legend Bobby Thomson at Meadowmill on Saturday the 6th of December for a special field naming ceremony. The club's home ground will now be known as 'Bobby Thomson Field' after the former Major League outfielder.

Remembered most for his series-winning 3-run home run hit for the New York Giants versus the Brooklyn Dodgers in game 3 of the 1951 National League playoffs that became known as the 'shot heard round the world', Bobby was in Scotland for his induction in to the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame at the National Museum of Scotland, held on Friday the 5th.

However, Bobby was thrilled to learn of the Devils' plans to name the diamond at Meadowmill after him and took time out from his hectic weekend schedule of interviews, awards and t.v. spots to visit the country's top ballclub.

Team members presented Bobby with a traditional Scottish quaich, some single malt whiskey and a Devils cap. A plaque honouring Bobby will also be installed at the field upon completion of the permanent backstop. Club GM Nick Clark explained the extent of the work planned to Bobby who was impressed and excited to see baseball developing in the land of his birth. The day closed with Bobby kindly signing some autographs before having to leave for more media appointments.

The Diamond Devils would like to thank Mr. Thomson and his family for honouring the club with their attendance and for agreeing to the field bearing his name. A former team-mate of Bobby's once said of him - 'a nicer man you will never meet'. This statement holds true to this day.

Diamond Devil hailed as hero after dramatic rescue...
FOR VIDEO OF AN STV INTERVIEW WITH DAVE, CLICK THE PHOTO ABOVE

Diamond Devils pitcher Dave Farr has been hailed as a hero after the dramatic rescue of tennants from a fire on Monday in Dundee. Farr and his colleague Claire Stoddart were on a routine foot-patrol when they noticed a "glow" from a block of city centre flats in Dundee.

Pc Farr ran inside the building to help while his partner grabbed a fire extinguisher. They were both treated in hospital for smoke inhalation, but were back on duty within hours of the incident.

Pc Farr described how he sprinted up the stairs of the tenement in North George Street at about 1800 GMT on Monday to alert the people inside - but when he and residents tried to escape back down the stairs, they were beaten back by the intense heat of the blaze.

Everyone inside the property, including Pc Farr, was trapped until fire crews arrived to extinguish the blaze.

"I suffered a bit of smoke inhalation, but nothing too major and I went back to work after leaving the hospital" said Pc Dave Farr.

Pc Farr, 27, said he found a 92-year-old woman in a first-floor flat and stayed with her until the fire brigade arrived.

He said: "I went in the ambulance with the woman and she was pretty grateful. It was good to know that she was okay.

"I suffered a bit of smoke inhalation, but nothing too major and I went back to work after leaving the hospital. "In fact, as soon as we left the hospital we received a call to go to another incident and of course that was a fire as well."

It is understood that senior Tayside Police officers are preparing a report into the fire with a view to the pair receiving official recognition.

The Edinburgh ballclub would like to extend hearty congratulations to Dave for his bravery! Well done #27!

The Edinburgh Diamond Devils have joined forces with other sports clubs from across Edinburgh to support ClubSportEdinburgh, an organisation set up to represent the voice of all clubs across the City.

The organisation, led by the City of Edinburgh Council, is designed to help promote sport across the city, collaborative working amongst teams and ensure the various sports outlets have a say. Also on tap are training seminars for club staff, joint events and open days.

The Diamond Devils are delighted to support this venture and further news on related activities will appear here in the coming months.

The Edinburgh Diamond Devils are delighted to announce that they have secured the support of O2, the mobile phone network, for their junior programme - the Edinburgh Junior Baseball Association.

The generous support of O2 will go a long way towards boosting the efforts of the committed coaches and volunteers that run the programme and help the little league continue to grow.

The revenue provided will be used to secure new safety and protective field equipment for participants, improving the playing facilities and maximising enjoyment for all.

The Edinburgh Diamond Devils would like to thank O2 for their gracious support of this key component of their ballclub.

Edinburgh Diamond Devils 'brand' trademarked
February 8, 2005  --   The Edinburgh Diamond Devils have taken steps to protect the club's unique name and various logo images. The decals and devices used by the organisation have been copyrighted under 'Creative Commons' licences that assert that the ballclub is the owner of these various items of intellectual property and are protected from being claimed or mis-used by other parties.

Nick Clark, Devils general manager said, 'We have made this move has to protect our brand, something which we have cultivated in to a well-known name across Edinburgh and Scottish sport as a whole. By taking this step we can avoid any future hijacking of our club name, as we have suffered previously. The logical next step is the trademarking of our name and logos under British corporate law and is something we are investigating...'

Full details of the organisation's CC Licence will shortly be available from our 'Downloads' page.
