EDMONTON CHURCH LEAGUE BASKETBALL 5-ON-5 RULES
The following rules have been designed to ensure fair play for all participants. Each player is expected to understand these rules prior to participation in the league. Any questions concerning these rules should be directed to Kurt Roy (edmontonchurchleague@telus.net).
    CHURCH LEAGUE ROSTERS
Rosters consist of 6- 12 players. You may not have anymore than 4 players of post-secondary experience under the age of 40. Post secondary experience does not apply to anyone who is 40 years old or older during the season. The idea of the league is that every team has competitive competition each season every year. Any team caught with illegal rosters will retroactively forfeit games and will be suspended for 1 season of play as voted on by the league captains. The league may make exceptions.
    PLAYOFF ELIGIBILITY
Players must play a minimum of four (3) games during the season and be included on the team registration, to be eligible to play in the playoffs. Players may not be added to the team registration after Game Three (3) of the regular season. There are no exceptions to this rule except for players who are injured. Injured players are required to still be at three (3) games, and on the sidelines for half of the game, through out the season to be playoff eligible, or receive permission from the league.
    REGULAR SEASON BREAKDOWN
All seven (7) teams play a single round robin in Division 1. All three (3) teams play a triple round robin in Division 2. All teams are then seeded in a double elimination playoff bracket. This occurs after the 6th vs. 7th play in game in Division 1 (the loser goes straight into consolation playoffs). Because we have more gym time in the fall than winter, winter playoffs will be single elimination. Cost has been averaged out over both seasons to $500.00/season.
    PRIOR TO THE GAME
Each team must have five (5) players on its roster who have registered their team by the predetermined game-time. Team members may join a game in progress at any point by adding their name to the score sheet. No substitutions are allowed once a team's roster of twelve (12) players has been filled without the prior written consent of the league. A player is allowed to participate for only one (1) team for the duration of the season without the prior consent of the league.
THE TEAM CAPTAIN WILL REPRESENT HIS/HER TEAM AS A SPOKESPERSON AT ALL TIMES.
All games must start with at least five (5) players on each team, unless both teams only have FOUR (4) players. Teams are penalized one point per minute after the designated start-time up to 15 points. The game is forfeited after 15 minutes.DIVISION 2 ONLY... If a team only has 4 players that team has the option of making the game 4-on-4 until a 4th and subsequent player(s) arrive, no matter how many players the other team has.
The home team has the initial possession. The visiting team will start the second half with possession out of bounds.
    ALL FORFEITS ARE FINED $50
    THROW IN/STARTING PLAY

The ball must be thrown in from OUT OF BOUNDS after being “checked or handled” by an opposing player in the offensive end. Any ball put into play by a player in their backcourt does not have to be checked by a defending player. ALL FRONT COURT POSSESSIONS MUST BE “CHECKED”.
    AFTER THE GAME
The captains of the both teams must sign the completed score sheet. THE LEAGUE WEBSITE CONTAINS THE OFFICIAL SCHEDULE FOR THE SEASON. AFTER EACH GAMENIGHT TEAMS SHOULD CHECK THE WEBSITE FOR OFFICIAL RESULTS AND SCHEDULING.
    GAME PLAY
Length of Games: Game consists of 2 halves, each 20 minutes in length.
THE LAST MINUTE OF THE 2ND HALF AND ANY OVERTIME IS STOP TIME IF THE SCORE IS WITHIN 10. Each game has only a 1 minute half-time.
Overtime: If the score is tied at the end of the game, the game goes to overtime. The team who last held the lead in regulation starts with OT possession. Overtime consists of 2 minutes run-time.
Stalling: No stalling is allowed. In the spirit of the league there is a 24 second clock. If you feel a team is stalling please report it on the league website or note it on the score sheet.
Jump Balls: All jump balls (tied up possessions) become the possession of the defensive team.
Time Outs: Each team is allowed two (2) 30-second time-out per game. The game clock does stop during time-outs. There are no time outs in overtime. A time-out can be called after any made basket or dead ball situation but not during play.
No Parking Zone (3 in the key): This zone is the key in front of the basket. An offensive player CANNOT remain stationary with both feet in this box AND receive the ball when guarded by an opposing player. A foot on the line of the no parking zone counts as a foot in the zone. Please play fair and move in and out of the key. If you feel a team is stalling or camping in the key, please report it on the league website or note it on the score sheet. Do not call it on your opponent, but please bring it up with their captain. If it remains unresolved, please report it to the league.
Substitutions: A player may substitute in after any dead ball situation only. During regular season play a player may also substitute in after his team is scored on. Please substitute in quickly as the clock never stops.
    SCORING
Baskets made from the inside the arc count as two points. Baskets made when the shooter has BOTH FEET behind the arc count as three points. Defensive team will decide "three points". If there is any doubt as to whether the made basket is worth two or three points, the basket will count as two points. Where no ARC exsists, team captains may agree on a three (3)- point area for baskets.
    FREE THROWS
Free throws count as one (1) point. A player is awarded two (2) free throws when the team that has committed the foul has 10+ in the half.
Missed free throws are live balls, meaning team’s line up to potentially rebound. The try for goal shall be made within 10 seconds after the foul called. Three players from the defensive team and two from the offensive team may line up to rebound. All other players will remain behind the three-point arc while the free throw attempt is being made.
    FOULS
Any time a basket is MADE and a foul is called the basket counts and NO FOUL IS RECORDED OR FREE THROWS TAKEN.
Flagrant fouls or continuous misconduct will result in team forfeiture and team dismissal from the league. All flagrant fouls are to be reported and recorded on the game sheet. A flagrant foul may be a personal technical foul of violent or savage nature, or a technical non-contact foul which displays unacceptable conduct. It may or may not be intentional. If personal, it involves violent contact such as striking, kneeing, etc. If technical, it involves dead ball contact or non-contact at any time, which is extreme, or persistent, vulgar, or abusive conduct. This includes yelling or clapping when a player attempts a shot. Trash talking. Continuous physical play. At no time should you intentional foul player because he has an easy lay up or basket.
First Offense: Player fouled will shoot one free throw and his/her team retains possession from check box.
Second Offense: Team forfeits game and is under probation for the duration of league.
Third Offense:Team is dismissed from league following review.
    BASKETBALL GOAL INFORMATION

    LEAGUE ADMINISTRATION
Any questions or disputes will be discussed only with the team spokesperson.
League Staff reserves the right to disqualify any team for infractions of the following policies: Use of illegal players: The players listed on the roster at the time an entry form is submitted are the only players eligible without the consent of the league. League Staff reserves the right to request identification from players at any time during the league. All participants are encouraged to bring picture identification to the games.
