GAME TALK
4-17 vs. Unicoi County....The Devils took over the Watauga Conference by BomBing the Cyclones, 3-2. Three HRs that maybe totaled 1000 feet put together, but it was enough in that 'cracker box'. You can count up any amount of hits for the Cyclones over the last three games and I will still tell you...... We Are Not Swinging the BATS as a TEAM! Defense is sound and you have to be pleased with the pitching thus far, but you have to put runners across the plate on offense by attacking. I don't see that in the Team right now :^( LOBs have really hurt this team thru the season. Now for a good note........ You really have to like Pappy's bat. Thats Papantoniou and he is swinging his stick with authority. Marley, Issacs, Hyder, Hilton, Anderson and Smith all had a hit. Just not when it counted as there were nine runners LOB! GEEEZZZZZ....... What do you do? You are past the 'drawing board'. Put the 'heart beat' in them and throw them back on the field. They are winners! NEVER FORGET....... "It's routine!"
4-18 vs. Dobyns-Bennett....Disappointing at best but with that 'Heart Beat'. Dunbar picked up the loss. Striding into the top of the 7th with a 6-2 cushion, the Cyclones dropped this one, 7-6. Hilton had a big plate game as well as a big hit from J-Rod and the defense played as expected. Anyhows...... it was a grand Cyclone effort and we get another shot at this #2 State of Tennessee AAA team very soon. Look forward to it with a little more grit in your system! The Cyclones are currently ranked #7 in the AA poll. Two conference contests with those being West Geene at home and Sullivan North away. Neither to be overlooked. One game a time. One out at a time. One pitch at a time. That will get you there. Show that GRIT.... show it Monday & Tuesday and bring the Tough Team to Greeneville, Cherokee and Daniel Boone. Look to 'Sweep' the Week!! Nothing less. We are nearing season's end and it is not a time to 'play down'. The TIME is NOW to Step Up as a TEAM!! One more thing...... HUTCH!!
4-23 vs. West Greene....A good team wins close games, but this one was much closer than it should have been. With no run production to back him up, Rob Davenport's back was to the wall. He threw a great game and Cody Marley came in late to pick up the win for the Cyclones. The Cyclone bats were scarce but with men on first and second, Coach Payne decided to pitch hit 'PAPPY' Papantoniou. Great move as Nick drove the ball to right field scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Cyclones, 2-1!!
4-24 vs. Sullivan North....Burleson took the loss despite a decently pitched game. North scrambled for six runs in the bottom of the 1st to seal the game despite a galant effort from the Cyclones who steadily chipped away at the lead. A dinger by J-Rod and Hyder.......BOOM! Gotta like that. But we fall to North, a very descent team, 7-6. The District Tourny is set. Make some noise and use these remaining games to be 'Tuned'. Still liking this team!!
4-27 vs. Greeneville....There is a reason why I like this team. They went out and had fun tonight and were a pleasure to watch. Davenport led the way pitching a 'whale' of a game. Behind him were a matchbox full of sticks. Rob was backed by the TEAM. Pappy Papantoniou went to work from the DH position in the batting order and Hilton followed suit. Many of the Cyclones joined the hit parade and HUTCH banged a solid 'dinger'. Cyclones 14-2 in five.
The second half of the double header featured Cody Marley with alot of movement. So much that he had the plate ump dodging the ball as it hit the spot. Kinda funny..... Cody did a fine job but was pulled in the fourth down a run or so. Crapps picked up the slack and got us out of trouble in the fourth. Casey continued the mastery of the Trailblazers thru the rest of the contest. The Blazers swing the bat but we swung it a bit better. Hilton had a huge hit late in the game and Anderson capped off the bottom of the 6th with a SHOT! Smith & Payne continue to rack up DPs...... Crapps picked up the win as the Cyclones continue to 'tune' themselves in anticipation of the Districts. Cyclones, 11-8.
4-28 vs. Cherokee....YEA-YEA! Dunbar cruised thru Cherokee's line-up like a hot knive thru butter as the Cyclones have begun to look like the team they are supposed to be.... especially at this point in the season. With today's 'Prom' in the back of thier heads, they seem to also have an eye out for May 5th.... the opening of the District Tournament. Several hits were made by the Cyclones but the biggest 'BANG' of all was Cory Hilton's 3-run Slam!! Cyclones, 10-1
5-1 vs. Daniel Boone....This one was like a punch in the stomach but now you get to see if you are a true fighter or not. Get back up or lay down? Hutchins made a 'catch of the year' in right. Davenport weaved his magic, Hyder & Hilton nailed the ball to the wall and Smith produced two RBIs but the Cyclones couldn't hold on to a lead going into the seventh. The Blazers, a very good team as well, put up three in the top of the seventh and made the plays in the bottom of the frame to seal the deal. Burleson was straddled with the loss. TrailBlazers, 6-4
5-2 vs. Dobyns-Bennett....These seniors won't get another shot at knocking off the Indians. The Cyclones failed to get by DB once agian, going down 4-3, although they gave them 3 hard runs for thier 'money' in three very close ballgames over the last two years. Just not good enough and so it goes..... What Could Have Been
Now to some District 1 ACTION!!
DISTRICT 1 TOURNAMENT ACTION
5-6 vs. Happy Valley....Burleson picked up the win after a very shaky first inning start. Hitting was scarce, but with HV up 2-0 after the first, the Cyclones pushed across a run in the third and fourth to tie the game. A little small ball action seemed to be the medicine. Burleson kept the Warriors in check after the first and in the bottom of the sixth our young men pushed across that winning run. J-Rod slapped a double and Hilton added a hit in getting that needed run into the plate. Hyder had a good day as well. The 'Dew' came on in the bottom of the 7th to pick up a valuable save with some crafty work from the mound. Some people get satisfied by playing teams close (See above DB game).... "Just not good enough and so it goes". Cyclones get that very precious first one, 3-2.
5-7 vs. Chuckey-Doak....Davenport threw the winner tonight. Without a doubt, a jewel. Wykle pitched a great game for Chuckey-Doak. The difference........DEFENSE. Great game by Hopson, Smith, Payne, Hyder and company. The TEAM did what it had to do to advance. Cyclones, 5-4
5-8 vs. Unicoi County....How sweet it is! 'The Dew' only managed a two hitter ;^) and the Cyclones banged out 15 hits. Everyone got in on this one, one way or another. Nothing is "Routine", but tonights game showed the fire that this team carries deep inside. Smith, Hyder, Marley, Issacs, Hilton, Payne........everyone 'got a piece'. Now we get to rest a day and wait on the 'Loser's Bracket' to clear itself up tomorrow night. Cyclones, 10-1
5-10 vs. Unicoi in the District 1 Championship....CYLONES 6-3!! WHEN IT COUNTS!!! CODY MARLEY.......let me say that one more time........CODY MARLEY. This young man, thru the year, has gotten better each time out and is peaking at the right time. Just ask Unicoi, as he struck out 8 in five innings (not to mention his two hits and Game Winning RBI). Then Josh Hutchins (who recorded the WIN) came on and was touched early by the Devils, but come the 7th inning, Unicoi couldn't play in Hutch's neigborhood. Then came Weston Issacs with two hits and two RBIs followed by Payne with an RBI, Hilton with an RBI and Austin Taylor with an RBI. It was 'game on' for the Cyclones who followed up the pitching with errorless baseball. DEFENSE has been a huge key for this group of Cyclones as they continue to PROVE that conditioning, hard work and solid no BS coaching gets the job done. And to our friend and sports writer with the JC Press who predicted that the Cyclones would not be in the championship.........well????.......("ROUTINE!" A word we learned from the Devils) JUMP AROUND!!
5-14 vs. Pigeon Forge....The Cyclones in style, 3-0!!!!
5-16 vs. Rutledge....A 'Tuned-In' TEAM. Cyclones, 9-1!!!!
5-19 vs. Gibbs....An end to the road. Cyclones fall to the Eagles, 9-3
