SPARTANS @ GENERALS
August 30, 2009 --
Matt Carr, Defense, Dominate Young Spartans
It became fairly obvious from the opening kickoff who the better football team was at Hunterdon Central HS. on Saturday night. Generals wr Ryan Lindsley from Sparta, NJ fielded the opening kickoff at his own 17 yard line, found a seam and followed his blocking up the field for an 83 yard touchdown before the game was 15 seconds old. Ryan has gamebreaking speed as was witnessed this night during a 55 yard punt return, which was called back due to a penalty.
The young, but determined Spartans, from South Philly, never quit , even thought they were totally outmanned by an experienced Generals defense, 63-0, led by Defensive end/linebacker Matt Carr, who was a human highlight reel in tonights contest. Matt was all over the field making tackles, was credited with two sacks, caused and recovered a fumble, and even caught a touchdown pass on offense. This Generals Defense has some "players" and they play with reckless abandon. As well as Carr, there is Dan "Tatoo" Leask,#24 a DE who blocked a punt on an outside blitz, and Justin Papa, a former Voorhees All Star running back, who recovered the blocked punt and returned it for a TD.
Jason Golden, A Moravian college graduate, #21, played his usual stellar defensive game causing and recovering a fumble. Barry Coles, #20, DB made a spectacular over the shoulder interception and ran it back 40 yards to put the Generals offense in the Red Zone for an eventual score. Joe (captain) Phillips, is another of the defensive stalwarts on the Generals. He also picked off a Spartan pass and was involved in a slew of tackles. Justin Green, who played his football at Del Val HS, picked off an errant pass, picked himself up off the turf and returned the int, 35 yards for a TD. Justin also had a bone jarring block during the game on a kickoff. Jim Robertson, #32, played his HS ball at High Point , but starred at Frostburg State College, a Division III perennial powerhouse. Jim was named nationally, division III player of the week twice while playing OLB at FSC. He has a nose for the football and knows the nuances of the game. Def lineman Jerry Terpay, played his customarily tough defense bottling up the spartans offense line so the General linbackers could make the plays. Linebacker JD Rhinehart, #34, a Warren Hills, star, and Kellen McCaughey #39 a Hunterdon Central grad, both made outstanding hits on defense. Kellen played TE at Wesley College, another strong division III program. DL Nick Piacenza, #78 was a force in the interior line as he was involved in 6 tackles.
Offensively, the Generals only ran 20 plays!!! QB Ricky Kurtz, Del Val HS, once again led the offense, running for 91 yards and 3 TD's on 5 carries and completing 3 of 5 passes for 2 TD's to his two favorite recievers, Ryan Lindsley and Mike (Mr touchdown) Opdyke. Kurtz used his football saavy and footspeed and once again, ran over an opponent on his way to one of his touchdowns. He is a very physical runner who refuses to run out of bounds when confronted by a pursuing defender.
It should be mentioned here that kicker Steve Hellings, HCHS, and Akron U. drilled all nine extra points splitting the uprights and continued to pin his opponents deep in their own territory with his booming kickoffs.
Its not often that an offensive lineman gets mentioned simply due to his job, which is simply to block. Not as simple as it may seem. This Generals offensive line, led by center Ron Vladyka, #60 who played football for Lebanon Valley college, as an offensive guard, Corey Clarke, #71, OT, and Logan Yukniewicz, #99 are melding together into a cohesive unit. Chemistry and execution seem to be the keys, according to Clarke and Yukniewicz.
RB Justin Franklin, #30 a 2006 Warren Hills grad, looked good as he ran for 20 yards on 4 carries. Reserve QB Darrell Moresi #43 saw his first action of the year, at that position and scored a touchdown on a 7 yard run, and Barry Coles # 20, made a nifty 12 yard run to set up Moresi's TD.
The halftime show featured the "Generalettes" a dance team brought together by a love for entertaining and Generals football.
They are:Madison Riley an incoming Franklin Township 6th grader and daughter of Generals Head coach Chris Riley. Lauren Hunter, who loves to dance and is a graduate of Kean university with a double major in Criminal justice and broadcast communications as well as a Masters degree. Brittany Mortensen, a Warren Hills grad in 2002, and currently working in sales. Abbey Fink, a 2006 Rutgers univ graduate, who is employed in the Human Resources field. Hanna and Jessica Smith, daughters of Owner, Dan smith. Both young ladies attend Good Shepherd Christian Academy. Hanna would like to eventually become a Medical doctor, and Jessica dreams of becoming a high school teacher.
Thanks, ladies for a very entertaining dance routine!
The next game for the Generals is scheduled for this Saturday against the Blackhawks at Iron Works Park, in Mount Holly, New Jersey. Kickoff will be at 4:00 pm. Directions for the game is on the Generals website.
The South Philly Spartans were led by QB, reciever, and OLB Spencer Cross, a Shawnee HS graduate, in NJ. Spencer was all over the field and for a young player , shows a great deal of promise for the spartan's future. Spencer wears #15. Chris Napoli #82, played WR and DB and is a graduate of Roman Catholic HS in Philly. George Castro, #21 played for Bach HS in Philly and George Pettit, #69 a two way lineman, played for the Philly Thunder, a semi pro team, at one time in the league. Best wishes go out to these fine players from the Spartans.

GENERALS @ CONSHY STEELERS
August 9, 2009 --
GENERALS STRUGGLE IN LOSS TO CONSHOHOCKEN STEELERS 17-14.
The Steelers had not felt comfortable with their starting QB even though they were unbeaten in their first three games played this year. So they re-signed their 2008 QB who had gone into retirement, just for the game against the unbeaten Generals. The move paid off as he threw two touchdown passes and drove the Steelers to within field goal range, which proved successful, and that gave the Steelmen their fourth consecutive win of the year and dropped the Generals from the unbeaten ranks. Interestingly enough, the rivalry will be renewed in three weeks when the Conshi black and gold invade the Generals turf at Hunterdon Central High School in a game you, as a fan, will NOT want to miss. This RIVARY is becoming intense!
The first quarter was all Steelers as they dominated possession throughout keyed by two facemask penalties, which kept the ball out of the offense' hands and kept the Generals defense on the field. But the Gens "D", anchored by defensive lineman Jerry Terpay and DE Matt Carr, stuffed run and kept the game scoreless as the first quarter ended. Carr , a force throughout the contest, sacked the Steelers QB twice and made several tackles for minus yardage. Terpay, who plays both offensive line and defense is a throwback to the old style players of the 50's and 60's. OLB Jeff Martin, and MLB, Dan Smith bottled up the Steelers running game and kept them at minus ground yardage. Martin, #42, is a young player fresh out of the college ranks who knows the game well and is in on most every tackle.
The second quarter began with the Steelers driving the ball down to the Generals six yard line, and on first and goal, their QB dropped back, raised his arm to throw, and the ball pooped out of his hands into a the hands of, guess who?, Matt Carr, who intercepted the fumbled football in midair which put to rest another Steeler drive.
The Generals "D" was constantly put to the test as the "offense" could not put together a consistent drive. Dan Leask, who became a proud "Daddy", the night before, was instrumental in pressuring the QB and is a positive presence on defense.
The first points of the game came on a 32 yard field goal by the Steelers kicker after a big time stop on defense for the team from Flemington. It was a psychological victory for the Gens, but they now trailed 3-0. After a failed QB sneak by Gens, QB Ricky Kurtz the Steelers got the ball back and their newly signed ex retired QB proceeded to engineer a succeesful TD drive ending in a perfect 9 yard fade pattern to his favorite reciever, # 13 Palmer.
That TD put the Steelers in front 10-0 and the Generals looking for a solution to the offensive inconsistencies. Irving Mims, #9 WR/KR/DB returned the kickoff to the Generals own 33 yard line , but the offense stalled again, as Kurtz' pass to Ryan Lindsley was intercepted to end the first half.
the second half started well for the Generals defense as they stuffed the Steelmen offense and forced a punt. At that point the Generals offense became rejuvenated under the leadership of head coach Chris Riley , QB Rick Kurtz, and RB Erik "E" Foxworth #26. "E" ran for 19 yards during the drive and Kurtz hooked up with his two "go to" guys, Ryan Lindsley, and Mike Opdyke. Lindsley played an outstanding game at Flanker with 7 receptions in the game including one for a touchdown late in the 4th quarter.
After Kurtz' 27 yard recption to Opdyke #17, He and center DJ Fiore, noticed a flaw in the Steelers defensive setup, and called an audible for a QB sneak. The paln worked as Kurtz took the snap from Fiore and scampered untouched for a 32 yard TD. Hellings follwed with the PAT and the Gens were back in the game, 10-7.
Then Jim Robertson, #32, an outstanding OLB for the Generals picked off an errant pass and once again the now revived Gens took over at the Steeler 25 yard line. Kurtz hit Ryan Lindsley, #13 for what appeared to be a 25 yard pass play which would have put the ball on the Steelers 6 yard line, but there was a dead ball foul on the Generals for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for a late hit, which put the ball back at the Steelers 22 yard line. Hellings then missed a 35 yard field goal several plays later, as the third quarter ended.
The Steelers got back their second wind and their QB thru a flat pass, which should have only been a 3 yard gain but their #13 Palmer made one move, avoided a tackle and ran untouched into the end zone for an 82 yard TD which eventually broke the Generals back. that score plus the PAT put the Steelers up 17-7. The Generals still had fight in them as QB Kurtz led them down the field and once again, scampered for a long 41 yard run on a QB keeper but was knocked out of bounds on the Steelers 9 yard line. Three plays later he hit his buddy Ryan Lindsley for a 9 yard yd TD and the Generals were behind 17-14. After a long KO return setup the Steelers inside the Generals 20 yard line, the Staunch Defense stopped the Steelers cold on a 4th and goal from the 2 yard line with about 3 minutes left in the game. Kurtz, once again led the Generals down the field into Steelers territory assisted by the dogged running of Eric Foxworth. The Gens took the ball down to the Steelers 25 yard line before the Steelers picked off a 4th down and 9 Kurtz pass to end the exciting contest and the Steelers came out on top 17-14.
GENERALS notebook: #14 Russ Campbell wr made two nice grabs for the Gens. Barry Coles, #20 also made a critical reception. Joe Phillips was, once again, a key contributor to the Generals defensive scheme.
Come out and follow your FLEMINGTON GENERALS. The next game is at home vs the Spartans on Saturday Aug.15th at 7:00pm. Bring a "Date" Food, and beverages will be served and its a great night night out for all. Come out and see your Generals come back to WIN out and put Sat Sept 12th on your schedule as the Gens will host the Conshohocken Steelers!!! A victory is gauranteed by the GENS>!!!!!

PUNISHERS @ GENERALS
August 2, 2009 --
Hellings's kicks, Carr's hits, DRIVE Generals to Victory Lane over Punishers.
"They were who we thought they were" was the statement made by one of the Generals players during a battle of unbeatens at Hunterdon Central High School on Saturday night. The semi pro football team from Long Island came in touted as a stingy defensive squad giving up less than 6, thats right, 6 yards per game against its first three opponents. The punishers, composed of several former stars from Nassau community College, a nationally ranked program over the years, were fast, athletic, and used to dominating their opponents.
The game failed to disappoint the several hundred fans who cheered the Generals throughout the contest. The Generals, (3-0) were led by the games' MVP, as determined by head coach Chris Riley, Steve Hellings. Hellings (#4) the place kicker booted 3 field goals of 46, 40, and 34 yards to pace the "silver and Blue" to a 17-7 win. Hellings a former walk on kicker at University of Akron, has connected on 11-11 extra points and 3-3 field goals thus far this year!! Assisted by premier long snapper, and fellow rookie Jeff Martin, and veteran holder, Ricky Kurtz, the threesome has extended the term "chemistry" to a whole different level.
Quarterback, Ricky Kurtz (#3) former 2nd team All New Jersey State QB, at Del Val in 2004, who played for current HC Head football coach Matt Perotti, was his usual tough self. Although he struggled thru a not so characteristic performance, he was able to lead the Generals down the field several times with some gutsy runs at crucial times during the game. Kurtz was 6-13 passing with one TD and 2 int. He picked up two important first downs, by literally running over "punishers" during the second half comeback.
Defensively, the MVP was Matt Carr, a defensive end standout for the Generals and former "All Conference star quarterback" at Del Val high school in 2005. Matt was involved in many huge plays but the one that was the clincher was an interception of a Punisher pass late in the fourth quarter that he ran back 31 yards. " I was able to read the play and saw it coming" a delighted "Carr" quipped after the game. Matt also has "linebacker" reading skills from his All Star days at Del Val and they came in handy on Saturday night! "Truck" as he was know back in his midget playing days, was all over the field making tackles, and even showed his athletic ability by returning a short kickoff 18 yards to open the 2nd half.
Generals rookie running back Eric Foxworth (#26) played an outstanding game gaining crucial yardage against a very tough to run against Punishers defense. Eric will take his skills to Wagner College in the fall and will be sorely missed from the Generals backfield.
Other General players who made major contributions in the game were DE Jerry Terpay, (1999 North Hunterdon). Jerry was a menace to the Punishers offense. He had 1 sack, one pass knockdown, and was consistently in the Punishers' quarterbacks' face all night. Team owner, Dan Smith,(#92) who doubles as defensive coordinator and middle linebacker, engineered a close to perfect defensive scheme vs the speedy team from Nassau. Dan, who never stops moving or coaching inspired his teams efforts by "action speaks louder than words" leadership. Def tackle Logan Yukniewicz, (#99) was a bulldog in the trenches making several tackles for lost yardage and fouled up the Punishers's offense scheme all night by eating up the offensive linemen. Logan is known for his unsatiable eating habits off the field as well. (C) D.J. Fiore (#43) was instrumental to the Generals offensive line, as he provided stout protection for QB Kurtz. DJ, a graduate of Wall twsp HS in 1999 was the3 number one running back prospect in the State of New Jersey, that year and still hold school records at Kean University in "most yardage/ carry avg (7.2) and longest run from scrimmage (91 yrds) DJ, a "team" player would love to return to his tailback days, but plays offensive line because his athletic ability allows him to be a stalwart center. Jason Goldan (#21) plays strong safety for the Generals. Jason played his HS ball at Hillsborough and was "1st team All Conference" D-back for Moravian College in 2000. Jason is one of the key players in the Generals defensive scheme. He is very gifted athletically and was involved in a huge breakup of a pass play late in the 2nd quarter which ended a long Punishers" drive. Jason was also "Golden" as he was able to strip the ball and caused a fumble which Jeff Martin (#42) OLB recovered early in the third quarter. Martin, a star rookie, played his college football at "William Patterson" and is one of the surprising new players on this year's Generals' squad.
Another rookie is WR Ryan Lindsley (#13). He is one of the fastest players on the 2009 Generals roster, and also returns kickoffs and punts. Ryan , a Wagner College former player, caught 5 passes in the game and kept several drives alive with his sure handed grabs. Watch this kid in the future. He has big play abilities and played with Kurtz at Wagner, so the chemistry is there as well. WR Mike "Mr touchdown" Opdyke just makes touchdowns!! He is Rick's "go to guy" and came thru again on Saturday night with his famous "fade pattern" touchdown catch which he has become known for. Mike is a big target at 6'5" and believe it or not, never played football in HS!!
Dan Leask (#24) DE, is an ex MARINE who plays football as tough as Marines are tough! Dan made , perhaps, the biggest play of the game, early in the 4th quarter, when he singlehandedly pressured the Punishers's speedy, talented QB, into a safety which gave the Generals an 11-7 lead, at the time. It was a disheartened Nassau squad after that play, and they were never able to come back from it! Dan played his HS ball at NH and this writer cannot believe he didnt win any individual awards at that level! He is a battler and one of the most "noticed" players on the defensive side of the ball. Nick Piacenza (#78) blocked a punt late in the 3rd quarter, which led to an eventual field goal by Hellings.
The Punishers opened the game with their first possession and moved the ball downfield aided by a questionable facemask penalty called on the Generals. It seemed that the Punishers' punter fumbled the football first, before the facemask was actually grabbed, which would have been a Generals recovery. The Punishers went on to score a TD and led 7-0. That was only score the fired up Generals defense gave up all night. From then on it was the Flemington Generals, led by Coach Chris Riley's up tempo offensive scheme, and the talented foot of Steve Hellings
which crushed the vaunted team from Long Island. Next up for the Generals is a Saturday night contest against the Conshohocken Steelers at conshohocken stadium in Pennsylvania. Directions for the 7:00 pm kickoff in listed on the Flemington Generals website.

GENERALS @ CHARGERS
July 20, 2009 --
The Flemington Generals opened up the season against the Electric City Chargers and the Generals offense was the story as they put up 49 points.
QB Ricky Kurtz threw for 176 yards and a TD as well as rushing for 3 TD’s. Generals rookie RB Eric Foxworth was another key part as he averaged over 8 yards a carry and scored 2 TD’s. The team had over 325 yards total offense. Offernsive line which comprised of tackles Jerry Terpay and Nick Livoti, guards Corey Clarke and Ron Vladyka with center DJ Fiori combined for the teams MVP honors as they provided Kurtz with a lot of protection and gave Foxworth plenty of lanes to run through.
The defense let up a high and surprising 21 points, 7 of them coming on the Chargers first play from scrimmage as they ran a half back pass from the Generals 44 yard line to score. Defensively the team forced three turnovers and set the offense up with good field position all game. The Generals play next Saturday in their home opener against the Blackhawks where they look to continue their high scoring ways.
Final score GERERALS-49 CHARGERS-21
