    Field Maintenance

    Dear Guilderland Baseball Players:

The season is beginning and we need to emphasize the responsibilities and importance of maintaining the fields on which you play. We need your help in order to keep them in good shape. This has to be done after the last game of the day, and every player must participate. It should take about 15-20 minutes.

    1. Two or 3 players (Dutchmen may need 4 or 5 players) to bring water hose onto the field and prep it to water the plate and mound. The actual watering should be done by a coach or someone else who has been instructed on how to spray down the field. When finished spraying down the mound and plate, recoil the hose and put it back.

    2. Two players to rake the plate area flat and tamp the batters and catchers boxes (use your feet) and re-level, then move to the 1st and 3rd base paths, raking with the chalk line, not side to side.

    3. Two players to remove the bases and store them in the first base dugout, insert the base plugs and rake the areas around each base.

    4. Four to 6 players to bring the covers onto the field, open them up and place them on the mound and plate when ready.

    5. Four to 6 players to check dugouts for litter and trash and change ALL trash cans liners if full. At Dutchmen place the liners on top of the green tarped Turface near the Price Chopper trailer. Tawasentha trash to be placed near the left side of the Barn. New liners are in the helmet rack in the dugouts.

    6. The remaining players should walk the area outside the fence and pick up any litter or debris and check the trash can liners and change them if needed.

    7. One parent or coach to SandPro the infield area.

    8. One coach or parent, with the help of 2 players, to repair the mound at the rubber and landing zone. All the tools and material are in the dugout.

The managers should also advise the pitchers not to dig a hole on top of the mound! It's self defeating and can create an off balance set point. Scratching the surface to find the rubber is fine, but not a 2 to 3 inch hole. This will need to be repaired after each game. Thank you for your assistance.

    Sincerely,

    Mark Blaauboer - GBR President

    Mound Repair

All material is in the first base dugout at each field.
    Tools you will need:
    Long handle kitchen broom
Small bucket with wide brush inside (Keep water in the bucket)
    Garden rake
    Sand trap rake
    Flat shovel
    Tamper
    Short handle 3 lb. hammer
    Mound mix

    1. Take the kitchen broom and sweep all the loose material out of the hole in front of the rubber and the landing zone. Be generous with how far out of the hole you move the loose material.

    2. Use the small brush and “paint” the holes with water. Again “paint” the area wider than the hole. The key is to moisten the base so the new material has a surface to adhere to. If there is any water pooling in the bottom, brush it out. Let this setup for a couple of minutes. You’ll know when it’s ready by the appearance. There is no water pooled, it glistens because it is not dry.

    3. Spread the mix into the holes, crumbling any chunks that come out of the bag. If the hole is deep, fill it partially and use the small hammer to set the mix. Fill the hole to the top of the rubber and tamp. The final tamping should be done with some muscle. Continue to do this until it’s a solid surface, even with the top of the rubber. The surface in front of the rubber should be 6” deep towards the plate and a bit wider than the rubber.

    4. Perform the same for the landing zone.

    5. Using the sand trap rake, contour the area just filled and if needed, use the tamper to smooth out the edges around the rim of the filled in area.

    6. If there are areas that need to be smoothed out, use the flat shovel to shave off the mix. When done, rake the area smooth.

    7. With the holes filled, tamped and smoothed out, take the loose material from around the mound and spread over the new mix. There is usually plenty of mix and Turface on the mound for this.

    8. Moisten the entire mound using the hose, being careful of the new clay you just put down. It will absorb the water much quicker than the rest of the surface. Spray the water across the mound in quick, sweeping motions from grass to grass. The key here is to not pool any water on the edges. The surface will glisten in spots and show drying in others due to the Turface. When you see water beginning to run, stop there. Wait a few minutes and see if there are other spots you could touch up.

    9. Place the cover over the mound, being careful to minimize stepping on the mound.

Note: Managers call the game if it is rained out and will contact the umpire coordinator and their teams. Water drains off the fields pretty quickly and we have turface to soak up the water. Every effort is made to avoid canceling the games. Up to the minute rain-out info is NOT posted on this website.

Mothers were honored at the Babe Ruth field at Tawasentha Park prior to an afternoon game. Each player presented a rose to their mom following a lively 1-2-3 "Happy Mother's Day" cheer as only baseball players would know how to do - from pitcher's mound.

There are 4 kinds of people that are at each game.

PLAYERS -- Players play + they play hard -- they don't argue calls, they
don't trash talk, they don't coach, they don't dwell on mistakes. That
includes both their own and those made by teammates.

UMPIRES - They are the guys who call balls, strikes, fair, foul, out or
safe. Others might not agree but I have yet to see an umpire respond to
a yelling match by saying..."you know what, your right and I'm wrong. I
think I will change my call. Thanks for yelling at me."

FANS - Fans cheer and applaud all that deserve such. A nice play is a
nice play regardless of the color of the uniform.

COACHES - Coaches are the crossovers. They coach. They also get to
cheer. They are the ones that approach umpires when a "discussion" is
    warranted.

    All Star Selection Process

    * Exerpt from the Constitution and By-Laws document which can be found in the handout section.

ARTICLE X: All Star Team Draft Guidelines

    A. 4 players are voted on by the players with a ballot the week before the All Star draft (they can’t vote for their own teammates) – 13’s vote for 13’s, 14’s vote for 14’s and 15’s vote for 15’s.

    B. 4 players are voted on by the regular season managers - vote to take place by ballot at the All Star draft (managers cannot vote for players on their own team, but will be given an opportunity to promote the players on their team that they think deserve recognition before the vote takes place). REMINDER - vote is based on regular season performance - NOT travel team performance. There may be a player who is not on travel who deserves a spot on the All Star team, based on his regular season performance.

    C. 3 players are selected by the All Star manager at the draft.

    D. 1 player is selected by the President at the draft.
