    Chesapeake Baseball Association Tournament
June 21, 2009  --   With rain washing out all of Saturday's games, Sunday turned into a baseball marathon for the GORC Wildcats at the Chesapeake Baseball Association (CBA) tournament. The Wildcats were forced to play 4 games over 12 hours. Their efforts were rewarded with a second place finish.

The day began with a first round contest against the Lake Shore Bluesox. Offense was the story of this game as the two teams combined for 30 runs. The Wildcats prevailed 19-11. Hitting stars for GORC were Peyton Hudlow (3-4, 2 RBI), Brady Ward (2-3, 2 RBI), Robert Colvin (2-3, double, 1 RBI), Chris Ford (2-2, double, 1 RBI), Mason McElhaney (2-3, 3 RBI), Tyler Schmitz (2-3, 1 RBI).

Defensive highlights included Catcher Calvin Wood gunning down two would-be basestealers at 3rd in the same inning (4th), and a 1-6-3 (Peyton to Robert to David) double play to end the game.

In game 2, GORC squared off against the Southern Maryland Knights. The Wildcats took a 3-2 lead into the 3rd inning, but their pitching could not contain the Knights' bats as they fell 13-5. Hitting stars for GORC included David Williams (3-3, 1 RBI) and Ryan Kendig (2-2).

Game 3 pitted the Wildcats against the PAL Astros. This epic see-saw battle would turn out to be the most exciting game of the tournament.

The Wildcats took the early lead 6-2 after two innings. However, PAL would battle back with 10 runs to take a commanding 12-6 lead heading to the bottom of the 5th inning.

Down to the last 6 outs of their season, the Wildcats mounted the most impressive comeback in team history. Ryan Kendig delivered the big blow in a 5-run 5th inning with a two-out 3-run homer to left center. Robert Colvin then pitched a scoreless top of the 6th inning to keep the game close.

Up by a run in the bottom of the sixth, PAL retired the first two batters and were one out away from securing the victory. But Andrew Cassard singled, stole second base and scored on a Peyton Hudlow single to tie the game and send it to extra innings. After PAL once again took the lead with a run in the top of the 7th inning, the Wildcats showed they still had one more Houdini act in them.

Singles by Brady Ward and David Williams put runners on the corners with one-out. Then, Chris Ford delivered the game tying single, followed by a Mason McElhaney single to end this thrilling game.

Defensive highlights included two double plays started by First baseman Brady Ward, shortstop Robert Colvin gunning down a runner at the plate, and catcher Chris Ford throwing out a runner trying to steal second.

Pitcher David Williams went the first three innings for GORC allowing only 1 earned run. He would be re-inserted back on the mound in the top of the 7th inning with no outs and two runners on. He retired the only three batters he faced, setting the stage for the dramatic finish in the bottom of the 7th.

Exhausted after 10-hours of baseball, the Wildcats took the field again in the tournament finale against the Knights. Trailing 8-4 heading to the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Wildcats showed they still had some fight left in them. A one-out double by Robert Colvin got things started, and the Wildcats took advantage of some Knight fielding miscues, to battle back and tie the game at 8 heading into the 4th inning. However, fatigue would finally prevail as the Wildcats could not contain the Southern Maryland bats, eventually falling 17-8.

    Notable Tournament Performances:

    David Williams (9-12, double, 2 RBI, 0.769 OB%; 7 2/3 innings pitched, 3.91 era)
    Robert Colvin (7-13, 4 doubles, 3 RBI, 7 runs scored, 0.538 OB%)
    Peyton Hudlow (6-11, 4 RBI, 0.643 OB%, 5 innings pitched, only 3 BB)
    Mason McElhaney (5-11, 2 doubles, 5 RBI, 0.500 OB%)
    Chris Ford (5-11, 2 doubles, 3 RBI, 6 runs scored, 0.538 OB%)
    Tyler Schmitz (5-10,4 RBI)
Ryan Kendig (3-8, homerun, 5 RBI, 6 runs scored)

    GORC 13, PAL 12U Astros 1
June 16, 2009  --   The Wildcats put together one of their best games of the season Tuesday night, rolling over the PAL 12U Astros 13-1. After setting down the Astros in order in the top of the first inning, GORC scored 6 runs in the bottom frame before a single out was recorded. They added 4 more runs in the bottom of the second inning and the rout was on.

Offensively, the entire line-up contributed to the victory. Leadoff hitter Andrew Cassard singled, tripled, drove in a run and scored 3 times. Peyton Hudlow contributed a pair of singles and also drove in a run. Brady Ward was 2-2 with 3 runs batted in, while Brett Puhl was also 2-2 with 2 RBI. Mason McElhaney went 1-2 with a two-run single that ended the first inning. Chris Ford and Robert Colvin also contributed RBIs.

Defensively, Pitcher David Williams set the tone by retiring the first three batters he faced. After a leadoff single to start the second inning, he then struck out the next three batters to finish his evening with 5 strikeouts. Robert then followed in the third inning by striking out 2 batters. Brady pitched a scoreless 4th inning to help bring the game to an early close.

Defensive gems included Catcher Chris Ford gunning down a would-be base stealer, and Brett Puhl turning a 4-3 double play by tagging the runner going from first to second and throwing to first to double off the hitter.

Flag Day Festival--Sports at the Beach
June 13, 2009  --   The Wildcats made their annual trek to Sports at the Beach in Georgetown, DE the weekend of June 13th. Competing in the 11U Flag Day Festival, the Wildcats finished with a 2-2 record and a 5th place finish.

In game 1 of Saturday's pool play, the Wildcats faced a Staten Island Cadets team whom they defeated in last year's Sandcastle Open semifinals. This year's result was no different as the Wildcats prevailed 7-4.

Trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the second inning, the Wildcats posted 3 runs to take the lead for good. After Mason McElhaney reached on an error, a Chris Ford double and Ryan Kendig single plated GORC's first run. Then, with two outs, Brett Puhl delivered the biggest hit of the game with a two-run single. Brett later drew a walk with the bases loaded, giving him 3 RBI in the contest. Brady Ward, Robert Colvin and David Williams also drove in runs for the Wildcats.

In Saturday's second game, the Wildcats did not fare as well falling to the Tri State Arsenal 13-1. Nine walks and one hit batter put too many Arsenal runners on base, and Wildcat batters could only muster 5 hits of their own.

Sunday's first round elimination game began as an old fashioned pitchers duel. David retired the first 9 batters he faced, while the South Jersey Young Guns pitcher nearly matched him. However, in the bottom of the third inning, GORC exploded for 6 runs. Three of those runs were generated by Wildcat speed as Ryan, Calvin Wood and Andrew Cassard all scored from third on wild pitches. Andrew, Robert and David also contributed RBI singles, while Brady Ward recorded the only GORC extra base hit of the game with a double. Meanwhile, David completed his best pitching performance of the year, going 4 innings without allowing a base hit. A two-out walk in the top of the 4th accounted for the only Young Gun batter to reach base against him. Robert and Peyton Hudlow, closed out the last two innings of the 6-3 Wildcat victory.

In the quarterfinals, the Wildcats came up short against eventual tournament champion Indian Mills 9-6. Trailing 6-0 after three innings, the Wildcats showed great determination, but their late rally wasn't enough. In the game, Peyton and Robert each delivered a pair of singles and drove in a run. Chris drove in two runs as well.

    Gambrills 16, GORC 4
June 8, 2009  --   The Wildcats kept the game close for 5 innings before a 9-run outburst by Gambrills in the top of the sixth inning put the game out of reach.

Offensively, Mason McElhaney was 2-2, while Peyton Hudlow, Robert Colvin and Calvin Wood also collected base hits.

Defensively, Catcher Chris Ford made a great catch up against the fence, while shortstop Robert also threw out a batter from his knees.

    Lake Shore 12U 14, GORC 3
June 7, 2009  --   A lack of offensive firepower and sloppy defense led the Wildcats second loss of the day Sunday 14-3.

Offensively, the Wildcats could only manage 4 singles (Brady Ward, Robert Colvin, Chris Ford & Brett Puhl).

Six Wildcat errors in the field led to more than half of Lakes Shore's runs. One bright spot for the Wildcats--for the second game in a row, Chris threw out a would-be basestealer.

    Gambrills 12, GORC 5
June 7, 2009  --   The Wildcats could only manage 5 basehits against tough Gambrills pitching and fielding, falling 12-5.

Offensively, Chris Ford led the Wildcats with a pair of singles. David Williams, Andrew Cassard and Tyler Schmidt also collected hits for GORC.

Defensively, Chris cut down a runner at second from centerfield, and threw out a runner at the plate after retrieving a wild pitch.

GORC 11, Lake Shore 11U Blue Sox 4
June 2, 2009  --   The Wildcats overcame a sluggish start to defeat the Lake Shore Blue Sox 11-4 on Tuesday night. Trailing 4-1 going into the bottom of the 3rd inning, GORC put 6 runs on the board in that frame to take the lead for good.

Offensively, Mason McElhaney had a big night for the Wildcats going 3-3 (2 singles, double) with 3 runs batted in. Other Wildcats with multiple hits were David Williams (double, single), Chris Ford (2 singles) and Ryan Kendig (2 singles). Robert Colvin also contributed with an RBI triple.

Wildcat pitchers struggled with their control at times, but Peyton Hudlow, Tyler Schmitz, Calvin Wood, David & Ryan combined on a 3 hitter. Tyler allowed no runs and struck out two in the second, while David struck out 4 in and inning and 2/3 of relief. Ryan came on in the 5th and set the Blue Sox down in order to earn the save. Catcher Chris Ford threw out two would-be basestealers to help the GORC cause defensively.

The Wildcat's next game is 6:00 pm Thursday night at GORC Field 7 against the GORC 12U team. Plenty of good seats still available.

    GORC 12, PAL 12U Astros 11
May 30, 2009  --   The Wildcats came out on top of a see-saw affair with the PAL 12U Astros Saturday, 12-11. At least one run was scored in every half inning but one in this 5-inning contest.

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the first, the Wildcat bats came out swinging as they put 6 runs on the board. PAL answered with 6 of their own in the top of the second, but 4 more Wildcat runs in the bottom of that inning gave the Wildcats the lead for good.

Offensively, David Williams had a big game for GORC going 3-3 with 4 runs batted in. David's two-out single in the bottom of the 4th, plating Peyton Hudlow, proved to be the game winning rbi. Mason McElhaney had the Wildcats only extra base hit on the day with a triple to lead off the 3rd. Mason later scored on a wild pitch, just getting in under the pitcher's tag. Besides David, Ryan Kendig (2-2, rbi)was the other Wildcat with multiple base hits on the day.

Defensively, Robert Colvin pitched two very strong innings striking out 4 batters, while Peyton earned the save with a solid final inning of relief pitching. Tyler Schmitz caught a deep fly in left field for the final out of the game.

    MD Monarchs 11, GORC 2
May 28, 2009  --   The Wildcats stayed close early, trailing just 3-1 heading to the bottom of the 4th inning, but a 6-run outburst that inning by the Monarchs put the game away and the Monarchs cruised to an 11-2 victory.

The Wildcats put together 3 singles in the first inning (Peyton Hudlow, Robert Colvin and David Williams), but could only muster one run on Brady Ward's fielders choice. After that first inning, the Wildcat bats went quiet.

Defensively, David, Robert, Brady and Tyler Schmitz all pitched effectively. Ryan Kendig made a couple stellar plays at third base, but in the end, it was not enough for the Wildcats to top the Monarchs.

    MD Monarchs 12, GORC 6
May 19, 2009  --   The Maryland Monarch's pitching proved to be to much for the Wildcats as they handed GORC a 12-6 loss Tuesday night. Brady Ward was the only Wildcat able to muster a base hit off of 5 different Monarch pitchers, and Brett Puhl had the only Wildcat rbi on a 5th inning groundout. Ryan Kendig reached base twice on Monarch errors and scored two runs.

Starting pitcher David Williams gave up 2 earned runs over 3 innings while keeping the Monarch batters off balance. He also picked a runner off first as the Wildcats executed an excellent rundown. Pitchers Robert Colvin and Peyton Hudlow also pitched well for the Wildcats. Robert struck out 5 over two innings, while Peyton only allowed two runs and struck out a batter. Robert also picked a runner off third.

    GORC 26, PAL 11U Astros 12; GORC 7, PAL 11U Astros 6
May 16, 2009  --   The Wilcats secured their first doubleheader sweep of the season this morning defeating the 11U PAL Astros 26-11 and 7-6.

In game 1, the Wildcats jumped out to a 15-2 lead after 3 1/2 innings. However PAL put up 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th and 5th innings to make it a 3-run game heading into the sixth. In the top of the 6th, the Wildcats exploded for 11 runs to put the game out of reach.

Hitting stars for the Wildcats in game 1 included Tyler Schmitz (4-4,3 rbi, 4 runs scored), Brett Puhl (3-4, 5 rbi), Chris Ford (3-5, 4 rbi) Robert Colvin (4-5, 1 rbi), Andrew Cassard (3-5, triple, 2 rbi), Ryan Kendig (3-4) and Mason McElhaney (1-3, 4 rbi).

Starting pitcher David Williams walked the first three batters he faced before settling down and retiring the next 9 in a row. Shortstop Robert contributed to the defensive cause by throwing a running out at first from the seat of his pants. Brett and Calvin Wood also pitched well for the Wildcats in relief.

Game 2 was a much tighter affair. Tied 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth, Mason came to the plate with one out and Chris on second. He blasted a 2-2 fastball over the rightfielder's head to easily plate Chris with the winning run. For the game, Mason was 3-3 (2 doubles, single, 2 rbi). Other hitting hightlights included Brady's 2-run single in the bottom of the 5th which gave the Wildcats a 6-3 lead at the time. Chris and Andrew each collected a pair of singles.

Starting pitcher Robert Colvin was sensational, striking out 9 and only allowing 2 hits over 4 innings. The 4-inning stint was the longest by a Wildcat pitcher this season.

Brady came on in the 5th and pitched well. Calvin Wood came on in the top of the 6th with the go-ahead run on first base and only one out. After a weak comebacker for the second out advanced the runner to second, catcher Chris Ford's perfect peg to third nailed the would-be basestealer to send the game tied to the bottom of the sixth.

    GORC 3, PAL RED 1
May 14, 2009  --   There is an old baseball adage that says good teams find a way to win. The Wildcats exemplified that adage tonight as they defeated PAL Red 3-1. Despite managing only 1 basehit, the Wildcats used tough pitching, solid defense and hustle on the base paths to prevail in the contest.

Andrew Cassard led the game off with a walk and later scored on a Brady Ward fly to center. In the second inning, Chris Ford walked, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored on a wild pitch.

Meanwhile, Wildcat pitchers David Williams, Calvin Wood (struck out the side in the second) and Peyton Hudlow (2 innings, no runs) kept the PAL Red hitters at bay. Leftfielder Ryan Kendig snuffed out a 2-out rally in the third when he snared a bases loaded liner to end the inning. Brady pitched a solid 5th inning to send the game to the final frame with the Wildcats hanging on to a 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Brett Puhl scored on Andrew's sacrifice fly. Robert Colvin then came in and struck out the last 3 batters he faced to record the save.

    GORC 17, Lake Shore 4
May 12, 2009  --   The Wildcats took care of business Tuesday night, defeating the Lake Shore Bluesox 17-4. Robert Colvin led the way for the Wildcats with a triple, a single and 4 runs batted in. The entire GORC lineup contributed as the Wildcats banged out 15 hits and 10 different batters drove in runs. Catcher Chris Ford contributed a pair of doubles, and gunned down a would-be base stealer at third where Ryan Kendig applied the quick tag. Mason McElhaney, Tyler Schmitz and Brett Puhl each had a pair of singles.

Pitchers David Williams, Ryan and Tyler each pitched an inning and only faced 3 batters a piece.

    RBI 9, GORC 6
    May 10, 2009  --
The 3-game series finale Sunday afternoon was yet another tight battle between these two teams. RBI was clinging to a one run lead (5-4) heading to the top of the 6th when they put 4 runs across the plate and eventually earned a 9-6 win. In this game, Brady Ward continued his hot hitting going 2-3 (single, double) while driving in a run. Calvin Wood also contributed with a single and 2 rbi. Chris Ford also reached base twice (walk, single) and scored two runs.

    GORC 3 RBI 3; RBI 6 GORC 5
    May 9, 2009  --
Game 1 on Saturday was an extra inning affair that ended in a 3-3 tie. The Wildcats got on the board in the top of the first thanks to the speed of Andrew Cassard. Andrew walked, stole second and scored on two passed balls. Brady Ward singled to lead off the Wildcat second inning and eventually scored on a Tyler Schmitz ground out. The Wildcats scored their last run in the top of the third when Peyton Hudlow scored on Robert Colvin's two-out double to right. After RBI tied the game in the bottom of the 4th, pitching and defense prevailed as neither team oould muster another run. Defensive highlights included a perfectly executed rundown to nail a runner at the plate, and a sensational diving stop by Robert in the bottom of the 6th when he threw the RBI hitter out from his knees from shortstop. David Williams, Robert, Peyton and Brady were outstanding on the mound for the Wildcats as they limited RBI to just two hits over 7 innings.

The second game Saturday was just as tight as the first. Robert got the scoring started with a tape measure homerun over the right field fence in the bottom of the first. This was his first and the teams first round tripper of the season. Unfortunately, RBI answered with a homerun of their own in the top of the second.

The Wildcats led 3-2 going into the top of the 5th, but a pair of walks and an untimely error resulted in 4 RBI runs. The Wildcats answered with two unearned runs of their own in the bottom of the 5th, but were retired 3 up 3 down in the 6th as RBI held on for the 6-5 victory.

Pitchers David, Ryan Kendig, Brett Puhl, Calvin and Peyton all kept the RBI hitters off balance. Stellar defensive efforts included Chris Ford's throw from the right centerfield fence that eliminated a would-be RBI double. David also picked an RBI runner off first base, while Chris came out from behind the plate to pick another runner off first.

SO MD 13 GORC 4; GORC 18, SO MD 12
May 2, 2009  --   It has often been said that a great defensive play can turn a game around. Such was the case Saturday when the Wildcats faced South Maryland. Having lost Game 1 of the doubleheader 13-4, the Wildcats found themselves trailing Game 2, 3-0 going into the top of the second. Aided by 4 walks and an error, the Wildcats held a 6-3 lead as they took the field in the bottom of the second. At this point, South Maryland had scored at least one run in every inning of the doubleheader. When their leadoff hitter lifted a soft liner over shortstop, it appeared as if another inning would begin with a runner reaching base. GORC leftfielder Andrew Cassard, however, had other ideas. Streaking in from left field Andrew made a spectacular diving catch to take away a sure basehit. More importantly, his catch generated a sense of confidence in the entire GORC team that carried over to the plate. Spurred on by that defensive gem, the Wildcats would post 6 runs in the 4th and 6 more in the 6th to earn a doubleheader split 18-12.

Offensively, the middle of the Wildcat lineup came through as Robert Colvin, David Williams and Brady Ward each had a pair of singles. Peyton Hudlow also delivered a key two-run double in that top of the second rally.

Pitchers Ryan Kendig, Robert and Brett Puhl each limited South Maryland to a single run, before Peyton closed the door in the bottom of the sixth, striking out the final batter of the game.

In Game 1, only Robert had a multi-hit game (double, single), as the Wildcats hit the ball hard, but could not put a rally together.

    GORC 14, PAL Blue 7
    April 30, 2009  --   The Wildcats used a 4-run 4th and a 6-run 5th inning to cruise past PAL Blue Thursday night 14-7.

Offensively, Andrew Cassard's two run double in the bottom of the 4th inning broke open a 6-6 tie. In the 5th, Mason McElhaney's bases loaded triple was the key blow that sealed the victory. Two batters later, Brett Puhl's double down the third base line scored Ryan Kendig and Tyler Schmitz to end the scoring. Ryan and Tyler both collected a pair of singles and drove in two runs each. Calvin Wood also collected his second double in as many games, while Chris Ford reached base all three times he came to the plate (walk, single, hit by pitch) and scored all three times.

Peyton Hudlow, in his second game back since being activated from the disabled list, started the game by retiring all six batters he faced--striking out 5 of them. Andrew struck out two batters in the third, but was victimized by some defensive miscues. Calvin Wood struck out 3 batters over two innings, and Brady Ward pitched a scoreless 6th inning, striking out two, to close out the win.

    GORC 9; 12U Gambrills Bulldogs 7
April 28, 2009  --   Despite trailing 4-0 heading into the third inning, the GORC Wildcats defeated the 12U Gambrills Bulldogs Tuesday night 9-7. Brady Ward was the Wildcat of the Game going 3-3 at the plate (2 singles, double), driving in 2 runs and recording the save in relief. Brady's double capped a 6-run rally in the top of the 5th inning that put the Wildcats out in front.

Other hitting stars for the Wildcats included Andrew Cassard (2 singles, 2 rbi) and Calvin Wood who doubled and drove in a run during the 6-run rally.

Defensively, pitchers David Williams and Robert Colvin kept the game close early, while Calvin held the Bulldogs to a single run in the 5th. Brady pitched a scoreless bottom of the 6th to nail down the victory.

TRANSACTIONS: JUST PRIOR TO GAME TIME THE WILDCATS ACTIVATED PEYTON HUDLOW FROM THE 15-DAY DISABLED LIST (broken finger). IN TWO PLATE APPEARANCES PEYTON ADVANCED A RUNNER INTO SCORING POSITION (THE RUNNER LATER SCORED) AND WALKED AND SCORED A RUN IN THE 6-RUN 5TH INNING.

    GORC 12, PAL 12U 6; PAL 12U 11, GORC 8
April 25, 2009  --   The Wildcats split a doubleheader with the PAL 12U team on Saturday. GORC took the opener 12-6, but fell in the second game 11-8.

In Game 1, every Wildcat batter reached safely at least once. Brady Ward led the way going 2-2 (single, double, walk), driving in 2 runs and scoring 3 times. Andrew Cassard also had a pair of singles and scored 3 times.

Defensively, David Williams, Robert Colvin, Ryan Kendig and Brett Puhl limited the PAL team to just 2 earned runs.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats dug themselves into a 8-2 hole after 2 1/2 innings with sloppy fielding. They eventually closed the gap, but could not come all the way back. Ryan and Robert each collected a pair of singles in the losing effort.

Brett started the game with two solid pitching innings, giving up just 2 earned runs. Robert also pitched well, striking out the side in the 6th.

    Wildcats 7, PAL Astros 5
April 26, 2009  --   The Wildcats completed a busy weekend Sunday afternoon with a 7-5 victory over the PAL Astros. As is always the case when these two teams face each other, this was a close battle.

David Williams broke open a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the 5th with a one-out single to center that plated Robert Colvin. Two errors on the play allowed David to score. Later in the inning, Mason McElhaney drove in Chris Ford for another insurance run. Mason finished the day with a pair of singles and two rbi. Robert also had a big day at the plate going 2-3 with a double and a triple. Brady Ward also contributed a triple in the victory.

Defensively, David and Robert each pitched 3 solid innings. David walked none and struck out three, while Robert only gave up one run while striking out five Astros. Team defensive was solid as the Wildcats only committed one error.

    GORC 9, RBI 9
The GORC 11U Wildcats and the RBI Angels battled to a 9-9 tie Thursday night at GORC. Thanks to two 4-run innings early on, the Wildcats jumped out to a 9-2 after two and a half innings. However, the Angels kept battling back and tied the game 9-9 heading into the 6th inning. The Wildcats failed to score in their half of the six, and the Angels got the winning run to second base with no outs. But pitcher Brady Ward struck out the next two batters he faced, and induced the final hitter of the game to fly out to Calvin Wood in centerfield.

Notable Wildcat hitters included Andrew Cassard (1 single, 2 walks, 2 rbi) and Robert Colvin (1 single, 2 walks, 2 rbi). Brett Puhl and Calvin also drove in runs for the Wildcats.

Defensively, Tyler Scmidtz turned an unassisted double play when he caught a foul pop-up and got back to the first base bag before the runner. Also Robert picked a runner off first base; David Williams throwing to Brady who applied the tag at second for the out.

GORC 13, So MD Knights 10; So MD Knights 9, GORC 6
The GORC Wildcats and Southern MD Knights split a doubleheader Saturday with GORC prevailing 13-10 in the opener, and the Knights rebounding in Game 2 9-6.

After scoring 4 runs in the top of the first inning of game 1, the Wildcats found themselves trailing 9-7 going into the top of the 5th. A six run outburst in that inning led the Wildcats to the victory. Aided by two walks and two Knight errors, the Wildcats broke the game open with a 2-run single by Brady Ward. Brady finished the day going 2-2 and driving in 4 runs. Ryan Kendig also had a stellar effort at the plate going 3-3 and scoring two runs. Andrew Cassard also collected two hits (double, single) and drove in a run, while David Williams and Tyler Schmidtz each drove in a pair of runs. Solid pitching from David (4Ks) and Calvin Wood (2Ks) helped hold the Knight bats in check.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats could not overcome two big innings by Southern MD. Highlights for GORC, however, included a two double, two rbi effort from Mason McElhaney, and three more runs driven in by Ryan. Chris Ford also collected a pair of hits (double, single) in the losing effort. Brady struck out two of the three batters he faced in the top of the sixth to keep the Wildcats in the game, but a two-out rally fell short for the Wildcats who are now 2-1 in CBA play.

    GORC 15 Lake Shore 2
April 7, 2009  --   The 11U GORC Wildcats opened their 2009 Chesapeake Baseball Association (CBA) season with a victory Tuesday night, defeating Lake Shore 15-2. Mason McElhaney led the way going 2-3 with 5 runs batted in; while Brady Ward went 3-3 and drove in 3 runs. Other Wildcat batters with multiple hits were Andrew Cassard (2 singles) and Chris Ford (double, single). Also worth noting, Ryan Kendig, activated from the disabled list just prior to game time, collected a base hit in his first action in more than two weeks.

David Williams, Robert Colvin and Ward combined on a 3-hitter, while only allowing two unearned runs. Ward made a spectacular diving catch to start 4-6 double play to squash Lake Shore's only serious threat in the first inning. Calvin Wood ended the inning by gunning down a runner attempting to steal third.

The Wildcats turned another double play in the second inning when third baseman Andrew Cassard caught a soft pop-up and doubled a Lake Shore runner off first. Ford and Ward later continued the Wildcat's stellar defensive effort by combining on a nifty 2-6-2 putout to nail a would-be base stealer at the plate.
