U10 Boys Finish Second in US National Futsal Championship!

Asphalt Green’s U10 Boys team already captured the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL) Championships this spring. This summer they were busy pursuing a national title in futsal, a popular form of indoor soccer played with a smaller, less bouncy ball and lines marking the boundaries instead of walls. The name derives from futebol de salão, which is “indoor soccer” in Portuguese.

On July 13, the U10 Boys made it to the finals of the 2008 U.S. Futsal National Championships in Baltimore, where they faced another CJSL team that they had beaten the day before to finish first place in their group with an undefeated record. Unfortunately, the final proved one match too many for the Asphalt Green Wave squad, who seemed weary from the four-day tournament.

Though not an outright victory, the U10 Boys can take great pride in being the second best team in the United States. And they were the only boys team in the tournament to field a female player, Jessie Himel, who played the bulk of every game.

The fact that both of the teams in the final play in the CJSL is a testament to the quality of soccer here in New York City. And, while most of the teams in the tournament regularly compete in futsal, Asphalt Green and its rival rarely play this type of indoor soccer.

Everyone at Asphalt Green is extremely proud of the success of our U10 Boys and Coach Cyril Charles. This is the first time an Asphalt Green team has made it to the finals of a national championship. Congratulations to the entire team, coaches, and parents!

Home Coming '08 .. a Huge Succes....

Green Wave Home Coming 2008 took place this past weekend October 18 and 19th.. On Saturday, the boys travel teams took to the field in high fashion... the U8 Academy kicked things off early in the morning, in the bright sunny, yet cold weather. Regardless fun was had by all as evident by their happy smiling faces...

Soon there after, our Boys travel teams took to the field to square off against local competition, within CJSL, as evident by the strong development of our teams, the Green Wave Boys (U9-U14) finished the day off with a 5-Wins, 1-tie and 1-loss record.

Sunday's Green Wave Girls homecoming was both successful on the field
and a celebration of our growth as a club. All 7 teams played with
pride and represented Asphalt Green well. The 4-1-2 record for the day
showed that AG Wave is fast becoming a major competitor in the
Westchester League. A summary of the day's games follows:

--In the first game of the day, the U14 girls emerged victorious over
the Harrison Hornets with a 1-0 win despite fielding only 10 players due
to injuries.
--The U13 team narrowly missed an opportunity to win and instead battled
FC Greenburgh United Strikers to a scoreless tie, a result which enabled
Green Wave to move ahead of them in the division standings.
--After losing to FC Westchester 6-0 during the first week of play,
the U12 team knew they had a challenge ahead of them on Sunday.
Though letting in two first-half goals, the team played FC Westchester
to a scoreless second half and showed their grit and determination.
--The U11 White team tied the Briarcliff Briars in an exciting game that
could have easily gone their way.
--The U11 Green team blazed to an amazing 7-4 victory over Edgemont that
left the fans exhausted from all their cheering!
--The Rye Falcons came to challenge the U10 Girls, but Green Wave was
determined to defend their home turf and emerge with a win.
--The U9s faced off against the formidable Scarsdale Storm and showed
that they were tough enough to win. As our youngest team, these girls
represent the future of Green Wave and we are proud to both welcome them
to our family, and support them as they develop into well-rounded
players.

Overall, in between, picture taking, eating a few hotdogs and burgers, the prevalent theme exhibited by all was one of team work.. on and off the field.... and this is what makes us all proud.

Thanks to all the parents and volunteers who cheered, helped out, and
made the Girls' and Boys' Homecoming a memorable one!

English FA bans Under8 Leagues

It was announced today, 6/27, by the English Football Association that they will be banning U8 leagues starting this coming season.(click on link above for full article)

In keeping with this current trend in soccer, come Fall 08 AGW is starting its own Grass roots program, The U8 ACADEMY. Studies have shown that focus at the younger ages should be on skill development rather than game results.

The U8 Academy program is designed to appropriately train players at an early age. With a focus being on technical skill development. Players will train 2 times per week seasonally (fall/spring) with a third day of training on Saturday, which includes small sided games in house. In addition, winter sessions will offer at least one day/week of training and may participate in selected tournaments throughout the year. Studies have shown that players at this age benefit more from training that focuses on skill work and small sided games, as opposed to league play in a competitive environment.

U11 Boys State Cup Weekend Results

U11 White lose State Cup Challenge Match to Syosset Warriors in overtime 3-1 this past Sunday, matched played at Pier 40.

At the end of regular time both teams headed off of the field with a goal each. After some dispute between the coaches of both teams and the referee, the referee determined that the boys would play two fifteen minute over-time periods.

Conditioning proved to be key as the Warriors then took the game to the Whites, scoring from a deflection in the box that sent Caden Pavlin one way and the ball the other. Max August did his best to rally the troops but the task proved to be too much for them this day. Syosset scored again and the U11's dream of advancing to the next round ended.

Until next year for the U11 White.....

The U11Green team fared better. The U11 Green boys cruised to the third round of the New York State Cup tournament with an impressive 5-0 win over Bay Shore. Asphalt Green dominated the Long Island visitors with crisp passing, accurate shooting and solid defense. Our team is scheduled to take on the Great Neck Gladiators in 2 weeks for an Away match.
