A's "Walk-Off" With Night League Championship The Kewaskum A’s captured the Tri-County Night League Grand Championship on Sunday knocking off the Rubicon Red Sox 8-7 in walk off fashion. The win capped another successful season for the team and also gave the A’s their first league championship since 1988, when they also claimed the Tri-County Championship. The A’s found themselves down early in this one though, as Rubicon exploded for 5 runs in the 2nd inning. Rubicon took advantage of three hits and an uncharacteristic four walks in the inning off Kewaskum starting pitcher Jim Ziegler in jumping ahead 5-0.
Kewaskum cut into that lead in the bottom half of the second inning when Jason Strobel connected on his seventh home run of the year with nobody on. Jake Panzer followed with a one out double down the left field line and Ziegler followed with a single through the hole at short to put runners on the corners. Matt Schilter then ripped a RBI single and Dan Shea delivered a two-out RBI single to cut the Rubicon lead to 5-3.
The A’s kept their momentum rolling into the third inning. Kurt Zagzebski walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on an Adam Sarauer one out single. Panzer followed with a tailor made double play ball to short, but when the throw to second sailed into right field, the A’s inning remained alive. Ziegler followed with a RBI infield single to tie it and Schilter ripped a RBI single to center to give the A’s a 6-5 lead after three complete innings. Both pitchers settled in from there though, as neither team scored until the 7th, when the A’s added an insurance run to push their lead to 7-5.
Rubicon would not go down easily in the ninth, as a single through the right side and a walk put runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out off reliever Jake Panzer. Panzer was able to strikeout the next batter for the first out of the inning and then induced the next batter into a possible double-play groundball to short. Everyone was safe on the play though, when the throw to second base sailed wide of the bag allowing for Rubicon to cut the lead to one. Rubicon then tied it on a fielder’s choice to short, but further damage was avoided as a groundout ended the inning.
With the game tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth, Jason Strobel lifted a deep fly ball to straightaway centerfield. However, in a game that featured numerous odd plays, the Rubicon centerfielder fell down backpedaling on the ball and Strobel ended up on third base giving the A’s a golden opportunity to win this one. Adam Sarauer was able to work a walk, as did Jake Panzer to load the bases. With the Rubicon pitcher completely struggling to find the zone, Ziegler walked on five pitches to force in the winning run. The A’s were led by Jason Strobel 3x5 (2B, 3B, HR, RBI), Dan Shea 3x5 (2 2B, RBI), and Jim Ziegler 4x4 (3 RBI’s). Jake Panzer picked up his fifth win of the season in relief. The A’s end 2009 with a final record of 31-12.

A's Salvage Weekend, Advance to Nite League Championship While the A’s had their opportunity to play in the Rock River Championship end on Saturday, they still had a chance to advance to the Tri-County Night League Championship with a win over Neosho on Sunday. In this game the A’s pounded out 20 hits and hung on for an 11-6 victory over a Neosho team coming off a three week layoff. The A’s now advance to play Rubicon in the championship at a time and place to be determined. The win also marked the 30th victory on the season for the A’s, the second consecutive season they have reached the 30 win plateau.
The A’s threatened early in this one, but wasted a chance to score when Jon Olla was thrown out at home on an Austin Sarauer single to right. The A’s were still able to take a 1-0 lead in the inning though, thanks to a Kurt Zagzebski RBI single. Neosho answered back in the 2nd, taking advantage of a fly ball that dropped in for a single to score two runs. Kewaskum took the lead for good in the 4th when consecutive balls hit by Matt Schilter and Jon Olla dropped in for RBI basehits to give the A’s a 3-2 lead.
The A’s tacked on four more runs in the 5th to push the lead to 7-2. The big hit coming in this inning on a Jake Panzer 2 RBI double to left. Adam Sarauer, Dan Shea and Matt Meisenheimer also chipped in with singles as the A’s batted around in the inning. Mitch Huffman cruised through the first seven innings only giving up the 2 runs, which came on a ball that probably should have been caught. Huffman began to run out of gas in the 8th though and gave way to Jim Ziegler who entered with the bases loaded for Neosho. An ensuing single by Neosho cut the lead to 7-6, but Ziegler was able to get a double play to get out of the jam.
Kewaskum pushed across four more runs in the 9th, with Zabzebski leading off with a double and later coming into score on a Jason Strobel RBI single. Panzer and Schilter followed with singles, mixed in between outs, to load the bases for Jon Olla. Olla ripped a clutch double to the gap, clearing the bases and pushing the A’s lead to 11-6 as the A’s hung on for the victory. Mitch Huffman picked up the victory for the A’s tossing 7 1/3 innings and was relieved by Ziegler, who threw the final 1 2/3 innings. Olla led the A’s hit parade with a 5x6 day (3 2B, 4 RBI’s) at the plate. Jake Panzer was also 3x4 (2B, 2 RBI's).

Clutch Hits Missing in 1-0 Loss to Clyman The Kewaskum A’s hopes for a chance at the Rock River Grand Championship game came to a screeching halt on Saturday as they dropped a 1-0 decision to 2-time defending champion Clyman. The A’s came into the game as one of the most potent offenses in the league, but a pitcher’s duel was in store, as temperatures in the low 60’s and stiff breeze blowing in all day limited both team’s scoring opportunities.
The A’s went down in order only once in the first five innings, but most of the scoring opportunities in those innings came with two outs. The clutch base hit never seemed to come in these situations and the game remained scoreless through four. In the bottom of the 5th, Clyman led off with a double, down the left field line, just off the glove of the leftfielder. A groundball out moved the runner to third, and a double to the gap plated the only run of the game. Kewaskum threatened in the top of the 6th as Austin Sarauer ripped a one out single and Kurt Zagzebski followed with a single of his own. A fielder’s choice put runners on the corners with two outs, but a failed double steal ended the inning.
The A’s best chance of the day came in the 7th though. Adam Sarauer singled to lead off the inning and Mitch Huffman walked to put two runners on with nobody out. Meisenheimer laid down a sac bunt and the A’s were in business with runners on 2nd and 3rd and only one out. That brought up Matt Schilter who ripped a one hopper to the shortstop, but with the infield drawn in, there was no way the runner on third ever had a chance to score. Jon Olla followed with a pop out to the first basemen to end the A’s threat. Kewaskum went in order in the 8th and 9th innings as the loss eliminated Kewaskum from the Rock River playoffs. For the second consecutive year, the A’s found themselves on the wrong side of a 1-0 elimination game in the Rock River playoffs. Jim Ziegler took the tough loss, throwing the complete game, while only giving up 3 hits. The A’s were led offensively by Adam Sarauer (3x4) and Kurt Zagzebski (2x4).

Strobel, Ziegler Push A's Past Rubicon in Rock Playoffs The Kewaskum A’s avoided getting knocked out of the Rock River playoffs on Sunday as they defeated the Rubicon Red Sox 6-1. It was the first win at Rubicon in easily over a decade, but it couldn’t have come at a better time for the A’s. Jason Strobel led the way at the plate for the A’s belting a 2 run home run to go along with a 2 RBI triple, while Jim Ziegler shut down Rubicon on the mound giving up 1 run in the complete game effort. The A’s now travel to Clyman on Saturday and with a win would earn themselves a spot in the Grand Championship game to be played September 5th either at Clyman or Rubicon.
Rubicon got on the board first in this one when Shane O’Hagan dumped a RBI double in front of a diving Jon Olla in leftfield. Kewaskum finally got on the board in the fifth and took the lead on a Jason Strobel two-run home run that was crushed to left. Strobel struck again in the 7th inning. A Nick Whitty walk and an Adam Sarauer single back up the middle put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. Strobel worked the count to 3-1 before ripping a triple to left, nearly missing his second home run of the day. The A’s would tack on two additional runs in winning this one 6-1. The A’s will now take on back-to-back Grand Champion Clyman on Saturday in Clyman at 1:30pm. The A’s then will travel to Neosho on Sunday for a night league semi-final game at 1pm.

A's Continue to Struggle Against Brownsville, Lose 4-2 The Kewaskum A’s recent woes against the Brownsville 49ers continued on Saturday as they dropped a 4-2 Rock River Playoff game at home. Brownsville jumped ahead 1-0 on a James Goodfellow 1st inning homer to dead center off Kewaskum starter Mitch Huffman. The A’s were able to tie the game in the 2nd inning on an Adam Sarauer RBI single back up the middle. Brownsville came right back in the top half of 3rd and took a 2-1 lead on a Goodfellow RBI single. The A’s quickly tied the game back up in the bottom of the 3rd on an Austin Sarauer RBI single.
With the game still tied at 2-2 in the sixth, Nick Whitty and Adam Sarauer ripped back-to-back singles to put two on for the A’s with only one out. Brownsville starting pitcher Tyler Witkowski was able to strike out the next two Kewaskum batters as the A’s wasted one of their best opportunities of the game to score. Brownsville rode that momentum into the 7th as JJ Raflik belted a 2 run home run putting the 49ers up 4-2. The A’s put a runner on base in each of the next three innings but were unable to get much else going and dropped their fourth game of the season to Brownsville. With the loss the A’s face a must win on Sunday in the Rock River playoffs. Nick Whitty and Adam Sarauer led the A’s at the plate each going 3x4.

A's Remain Unbeaten in Rock Playoffs With Win Sunday The Kewaskum A’s remained unbeaten in the Rock River Playoffs with an 8-2 victory over the Lebanon Whitetails Sunday afternoon. The A’s struggled early against Lebanon starting pitcher, Zach Lauersdorf, but the toll of Lauersdorf already throwing two complete games already this week may have began to show in the fourth. With Kewaskum trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, Jake Spaeth walked to leadoff the inning. Spaeth was able to get to third base thanks to a throwing error and a wild pitch and came into score on a Kurt Zagzebski RBI single tying the game at 1-1. The A’s took advantage of another Lebanon miscue in the fifth as they loaded the bases with two outs, but were only able to score one run, thanks to an errant throw back to the pitcher.
Kewaskum tacked on a single run in the sixth inning as Austin Sarauer reached on a single, and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The A’s put the game away in the seventh inning when they plated three more runs. Matt Meisenheimer doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a one-out RBI single by Spaeth. Shea reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases and Austin Sarauer followed with a 2 RBI single past a drawn-in infield to put the lead at 6-1. The A’s also picked up an insurance run in the 8th and 9th innings as they scored at least one run in each of the final 6 innings. Jim Ziegler got the win on the mound tossing 8 innings, while giving up 2 runs on 7 hits. Jake Panzer threw a scoreless ninth to closeout the victory. The A’s were led at the plate by Nick Whitty 3x5 (2 2B), Kurt Zagzebsk 3x4 (2B, RBI) and Austin Sarauer 2x5 (2 RBI). The A’s continue their Rock River playoff run on Saturday as they host the Brownsville 49ers in Kiwanis Park at 1:30pm. The A’s will also play on Sunday against an opponent and location TBD.

Kewaskum Picks up Victory on Day 1 of Playoffs The Kewaskum A’s knocked off Madison L.T. 10-2 on Saturday in a Rock River Playoff game. Madison L.T. jumped ahead 2-0 off Kewaskum starting pitcher Mitch Huffman in the top of the 1st, but Huffman settled in from there and shut down L.T. over the next 6 innings allowing no more runs. Jake Lathers threw two scoreless innings of relief to seal the victory for the A’s.
L.T.’s lead was shortlived on Saturday though, as the A’s put up 9 runs over the first two innings. Matt Meisenheimer got things started in the first with a walk, followed by singles from Dan Shea and Austin Sarauer to load the bases for Kurt Zagzebski. Meisenheimer scampered in on a wild pitch during the at-bat and Zagzebski eventually ripped a sac fly to left knot the score at 2-2. Jason Strobel blooped a double into right to give the A’s the lead and Whitty dropped a double of his own in to put the A’s up 4-2 after one complete inning.
The second inning was more of the same for the A’s as Adam Sarauer lifted a solo home-run to left, his second homer of the year. Jake Panzer followed with a single. After a sac bunt from Jake Spaeth, Meisenheimer again walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Dan Shea delivered a RBI single putting the score at 6-2. Austin Sarauer singled to load the bases for the A’s and Zagzebski followed that up with a RBI single. Nick Whitty capped the scoring in the inning with a 2 RBI single back up the middle pushing the A’s lead to 9-2. This was more than enough support for the A’s as they cruised to the 10-2 victory. Leading the way at the plate for the A's were Dan Shea 3x4 (RBI) Nick Whitty 2x3 (2B, 3 RBI) and Adam Sarauer 2x4 (HR, 2 RBI).

Kewaskum Wins Nite League Playoff Thriller Over Lannon The Kewaskum A’s knocked off the Lannon Stonemen Thursday night 10-9 in 12 innings in a Tri-Couny Night League playoff game. It was the A’s third extra inning victory in their last six games and the first time they have won at Lannon in a significant number of years. The A’s jumped ahead in the first as Matt Schilter led off the game with a single and Jake Spaeth followed with a double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no one out. A passed ball brought in Schilter for the first run and Jason Strobel followed with a two-run home run to put the A’s up 3-0 before the hosts even came to bat. The A’s picked up single runs in the second and third innings. Spaeth had a two-out RBI single in the second to score Schilter and Strobel had a RBI single to score Kurt Zagzebski in the third to push their lead to 5-1.
Lannon came storming back in the bottom of the third as they sent 10 batters to the plate scoring 6 runs. The big blow was a grand slam off A’s pitcher Nick Whitty that snuck just inside the foul pole in right. Trailing 7-5 in the fifth, the A’s loaded the bases on singles by Spaeth & Austin Sarauer and a walk to Zagzebski. Nick Whitty jumped on the first pitch he saw for a grand slam to put the A’s back on top 9-7. Lannon didn’t stay down for long as they scored two quick runs to again tie the game at 9-9.
A game that started off as a slugfest quickly turned into a pitcher’s duel. Jake Panzer came on in relief of Whitty in the sixth inning and tossed 7 innings of shutout ball. In his first lengthy appearance on the mound in quite a few years, Panzer dazzled to keep the A’s in the game. Lannon also countered with solid pitching after the fifth though. The A’s did not get the clutch hit in innings 6-11 that they needed, but in the top of the 12th with two-outs, Austin Sarauer ripped the go-ahead single to right plating Schilter. Panzer worked out of a jam in the bottom half of the12th inning to preserve the victory. The A’s advance to play a Night League semi-final game versus a team and time to be determined. The A’s also learned their Rock River opponents for the weekend. Kewaskum will host Madison L.T. on Saturday at 1:30pm and then will travel to Lebanon on Sunday also at 1:30pm.

A's Lock up #2 Seed in Rock Playoffs The A’s were able to secure the number 2 seed in the upcoming Rock River Playoffs as they defeated Oakfield 13-3 in Brownsville Monday night. The A’s jumped ahead 2-0 in the first thanks to an Austin Sarauer 2 RBI double to right. The A’s pushed their lead to 3-1 on a Dan Shea RBI single in the third, but Oakfield scrapped together two runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game at three apiece. Kewaskum took the lead in the fifth on a Shea sac fly and blew the game open in the sixth as they sent 12 batters to the plate and scored 7 runs. Nick Whitty had a big 2 RBI single in the inning putting the A’s up 6-3. Shea, Austin Sarauer and Jason Strobel each had RBI singles in the inning. Jim Ziegler picked up the win on the mound tossing seven innings and Jake Panzer followed with two perfect innings of relief. Leading hitters were Dan Shea 3x4 (3 RBI), Austin Sarauer 2x4 (2B, 3 RBI) and Nick Whitty 2x5 (2 RBI). The A’s travel to Lannon on Thursday night for a night league playoff game before returning home Saturday for a Rock River playoff game. The A’s will play at Kiwanis at 1:30pm on Saturday against a team to be determined at this point.

A's Offense Shut Down in Loss to Hartford With Rubicon defeating Brownsville on Saturday and the Rock River Northern Division title no longer a possibility, the A’s looked to lock up the number 2 seed in the playoffs with a win over Hartford on Sunday. Hartford had other ideas though as they knocked off the A’s 3-1. The A’s couldn’t cash in on numerous scoring opportunities as they left 11 runners on base and hit into two double plays as well. Taking the tough luck loss for the A’s was Mitch Huffman who gave up 5 hits to go along with 11 strikeouts. A few timely hits by Hartford was enough to give them the victory. Leading the way at the plate was Matt Meisenheimer who went 3x5 with a RBI. The A’s look to lock up the number 2 seed Monday as they take on Oakfield in their final regular season game.

A's Give One Away in Plymouth Championship Game The A’s found themselves in position to knock off the Brownsville 49ers for the second consecutive year in the Plymouth Tourney Championship on Wednesday night, but one bad inning left the A’s on the losing end of 9-8 game. The A’s jumped all over Brownsville pitching early on, scoring 8 runs in the first four innings. Matt Meisenheimer got things started with a one-out single in the 1st. After Austin Sarauer reached on an error, Kurt Zagzebski ripped a 2 RBI double to left to put the A’s up 2-0. The A’s stayed hot at the plate in the 2nd as Adam Sarauer and Nick Whitty reached with consecutive singles. After a sacrifice bunt by Jake Panzer, Jake Spaeth blasted a pitch off the rightcenter field fence for a 2 RBI triple. Meisenheimer followed with a sac fly and it was 5-0 Kewasum.
Kewaskum kept the momentum rolling in the 4th with a two-out rally. Meisenheimer had an RBI single and Shea followed with a RBI double. After Austin Sarauer was hit by a pitch, Kurt Zagzebski drove a RBI single to right to make it 8-0 A’s. Starting pitcher Jake Lathers cruised through 5 innings giving up only one run, which came on a ball that was lost in the lights. But in the 6th, Brownsville put together a few hits and walks and took advantage of a few Kewaskum miscues to cut the score to 8-4. Lathers was relieved by Jim Ziegler with Brownsville still batting in the 6th, but he did not fare much better as 3 consecutive hits by Brownsville put the 49ers on top 9-8. Shell-shocked by the quick turn of events, the A’s never really recovered and would go on to lose 9-8. An important weekend of games await the A’s, as they take on Oakfield Friday in Rock River action at Brownsville at 7:30pm before heading to Hartford on Sunday.

Panzer's Walkoff Single Lifts A's in 11 innings Jake Panzer’s walkoff double lifted the Kewaskum A’s over the Slinger Stingers on Sunday 4-3, in 11 innings. The win still gives the A’s an outside shot at winning the division and receiving the #1 seed in the upcoming Rock River playoffs. For that to happen the A’s must win their final two games and Rubicon must lose their final game to Brownsville.
The A’s jumped ahead 2-0 in the 4th inning as Austin Sarauer led off the inning with a homerun to get the A’s on the board. With one out, Adam Martz lifted a deep fly ball to left that fell for a double. Martz would later come around to score on a RBI double by Nick Whitty. Slinger answered back in the top of the 5th as the leadoff batter reached via an error. The next two batters went in order for Slinger, but the A’s were unable to escape the inning unscathed and a double by Slinger’s Brad Geldnich knotted the score at 2-2. The score remained tied at two until the top of the 10th when Slinger took advantage of another Kewaskum error to take the lead at 3-2. The A’s were able to bounce back in the bottom half of the inning though. Jake Spaeth was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Dan Shea moved him to second on a sacrifice bunt. Austin Sarauer then ripped a single up the middle to put runners at first and third for Jason Strobel. Strobel flew out to deep center, but it was more than enough to plate Spaeth and tie the game at three.
After a scoreless top of the 11th for Slinger, Adam Sarauer led off the bottom of the inning with a single for the A’s. Nick Whitty executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move pinch runner Jim Ziegler to second base setting the table for Panzer’s heroics. Panzer delivered with a game winning RBI double, past a diving third basemen, to end another nail-biter for the A’s. Ziegler picked up the win in relief of Mitch Huffman tossing the final 6 innings, giving up 2 hits and only one unearned run. Huffman tossed the first 5 innings, giving up four hits and just the two unearned runs. Austin Sarauer led the A’s at the plate going 3x5 (HR, RBI). The A’s travel to Plymouth on Wednesday night to take on Brownsville in the Plymouth Tourney Championship game. The A’s then head to Brownsville on Friday night to take on Oakfield in a make-up game at 7:30pm and the A’s finish their regular season on Sunday when they travel to Hartford at 1:30pm.

Martz, Lathers Carry A's Past Howards Grove The Kewaskum A’s picked up a non-league victory over the Howards Grove Riverdogs Wednesday night by a score of 9-5. Adam Martz led the offensive attack going 3x5 with a triple and one RBI while Jake Lathers threw eight solid innings on the mound to pick up the win. The game was back and forth through the first six innings, but the A’s used a five run seventh to pull ahead by the final score of 9-5.
In the decisive 7th inning, Mitch Huffman led off with a single and Matt Meisenheimer laid down a sac bunt to get the inning going. On Meisenheimer’s bunt, Huffman was able to sprint all the way around to third base. Dan Shea followed that up with a bloop RBI single down the right field line to tie the game at five. That brought up Austin Sarauer who grounded into a fielder’s choice to give the A’s the lead at 6-5. After two outs, Nick Whitty reached on an error scoring another run and setting the table for Jake Panzer. Panzer squeaked a RBI double down the left field line to push the lead to 8-5. The A’s added another run on a Howards Grove error to cap the scoring in the inning.
Lathers worked a scoreless 7th and 8th inning, and Nick Whitty came on in relief to throw the ninth as the A’s picked up their 23rd win against 8 losses. The A’s host the Slinger Stingers on Sunday at Kiwanis Park at 1:30pm in their final regular season home game. This game also marks Fan Appreciation Day, so stop on out for reduced concession prices.

A's Win in Dramatic Fashion in Oakfield The Kewaskum A’s escaped out of Oakfield with a 9-8, 11 inning victory on Sunday, ensuring themselves a spot in the Rock River Playoffs for the second consecutive year. The A’s jumped on top of Oakfield with a seven run third inning, but that lead disappeared as a sloppy 5th inning let Oakfield tie the game at 7-7. A Kirk Gibson like home run by Adam Sarauer in the top of the 11th and two outstanding defensive plays by Jason Strobel and Jake Panzer helped seal the A’s victory. Not to be outdone was the pitching performance by Mitch Huffman, who gave up one unearned run over 6 innings of relief to pick up his sixth victory of the year.
Oakfield jumped ahead in the bottom of inning one, taking advantage of a walk and an infield single to push across their first run. The A’s responded in the 3rd as they sent 13 batters to the plate in scoring seven runs. Nick Whitty led off with a walk and Jake Spaeth reached via a HBP to put two runners on for Matt Meisenheimer. Meisenheimer dropped down a perfect bunt for a base hit to load the bases for Dan Shea. Shea hit a groundball back to the pitcher and an easy 1-2-3 double play looked to be in order, but the throw sailed over the catcher’s head and two runs came into score on the play. Kurt Zagzebski took advantage and followed with a 2 RBI double down the line to put the A’s up 4-1. Strobel and Adam Martz ripped consecutive singles to score another run and Adam Sarauer capped the scoring with a RBI double to deep left giving the A’s a 7-1 lead.
The A’s however let Oakfield back into the game in the 6th as the Oaks sent 10 batters to the plate taking advantage of 4 Kewaskum errors, 1 walk and 3 timely hits off starting pitcher Jim Ziegler to tie the score at 7-7. The A’s manufactured a run in the top of the 6th as a Strobel sac fly gave the A’s a brief lead. However, Oakfield responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning again tying the score, this time at eight. The score remained tied until the 11th, when Adam Sarauer, bum leg and all, belted a two-out solo homerun to left giving the A’s the lead.
Oakfield would not go quietly in the bottom of the 11th, as they would put a runner on second with one out. The next batter up ripped a sharp single up the middle setting up a play at the plate. Strobel scooped up the ball in center and made a perfect throw to home to Jake Panzer. A collision at the plate ensued, but Panzer hung onto the ball to get the second out of the inning. After another single by Oakfield, Huffman was able to get a groundball to end the game. The win keeps the A’s in second place in the Rock River standings and puts their overall record at 22-8. The A’s travel to Howards Grove on Wednesday for a non-league game and then host Slinger on Sunday at 1:30pm. Sunday will also be Fan Appreciation Day for the A’s.

A's Pull Away Late in Victory Over Hustisford The A’s knocked off the Hustisford Astros 10-0 on Friday in a Rock River matchup in West Bend. It was the fourth shutout thrown by the A’s pitching staff in the last five games. The A’s found themselves in trouble right away in the 1st as Hustisford loaded the bases with no one out. Unlike last weekend, Kewaskum starting pitcher Jim Ziegler, was able to get a strikeout and a double-play to get out of the inning without any runs coming across. The A’s loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning, but were only able to squeak across one run on Kurt Zagzebski fielder’s choice.
Kewaskum tacked on a single run in the fourth inning. With one out, Adam Martz doubled to rightcenter and Adam Sarauer followed with a single to left to put runners on the corners. After a pop-up to second base for the second out, Ziegler ripped a RBI single to left to make it 2-0. Martz got the Kewaskum rally going again in the sixth as he doubled to rightcenter for the second time. Later in the inning Jake Panzer ripped a RBI single to left to score Martz. After a wild pitch moved Panzer up to second, Ziegler followed with a seeing-eye RBI single to put the A’s up 4-0.
The A’s put the game away in the bottom half of the 8th as they sent 10 batters to the plate scoring six more runs. With one out, Adam Sarauer blooped a single into right and Panzer followed with a HBP to put two runners on with one out for Ziegler. Ziegler continued his hot night at the plate as he ripped a 2 RBI double to left. Matt Meisenheimer then reached via a HBP and Dan Shea followed with a single to load the bases for Austin Sarauer. Austin proceeded to empty the bases as he ripped a 3 RBI triple down the line in right. Strobel followed with a RBI single to cap the scoring in the inning and for the night.
The A’s were led by Adam Sarauer (3x4, 2B) and Jim Ziegler (3x4, 2B, 4 RBI) at the plate. Dan Shea, Austin Sarauer, Jason Strobel and Adam Martz all collected two hits apiece. Jim Ziegler picked up the win on the mound tossing eight scoreless innings to go along with 2 hits and 5 strikeouts. Huffman threw a scoreless ninth in relief. The A’s play again on Sunday, heading to Germantown for a Rock River League tilt at 1:30pm.

Kewaskum Downs Lebanon 10-0 in Night League Action The Kewaskum A’s secured themselves a spot in the Night League playoffs with a 10-0 victory over Lebanon on Thursday night. Kewaskum scored early and often, scoring in each of the first three innings. In the 1st inning, Kurt Zagzebski lifted a sacrifice fly to drive in the A’s first run and Jason Strobel followed with a RBI single to put the A’s up 2-0. Adam Martz then blooped a base hit into rightcenter to score another run for the A’s putting the score at 3-0 before the hosts came to bat.
The A’s used another sacrifice fly in the 2nd to plate a run, this time off the bat of Dan Shea. Austin Sarauer also had a RBI double in the inning pushing the lead to 5-0. Kewaskum was able to put the game out of reach in the third. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Adam Sarauer, who ripped a 2 RBI single to right. The A’s improve their record to 19-8 (7-3 in TCNL). The A’s host Hustisford (in West Bend) on Friday night at 7:30pm in Rock River league action.

Kewaskum Routed by Brownsville 8-1 on Sunday The A’s continued their struggles against their rival the Brownsville 49ers on Sunday as they dropped the game by a score of 8-1. Brownsville took advantage of 3 walks, 3 errors, and 3 hits in the 1st inning to jump ahead to a 6-0 lead. The A’s had their chances all day to get back into the game, but the initial shock of going down six in the top of the first proved to be too much to overcome. Things started on a sour note for the A’s in the 1st as the leadoff batter for Brownsville reached via an error. A walk followed by a single gave Brownsville the early 1-0 lead. Kewaskum starting pitcher Jim Ziegler was able to then get a strikeout and a groundout for the first two outs of the inning, but another error opened the flood gates to four more runs for the 49ers.
The A’s showed some life in the bottom half of the 1st as Matt Meisenheimer ripped a single and Jake Spaeth walked to put two runners on. All the A’s could get though was a two-out RBI single by Kurt Zagzebski to cut the score to 6-1. Brownsville responded back with two more runs in 2nd to push the lead to 8-1 making a possible A’s comeback a daunting task. When the A’s thought they might have a chance to get back into the game, it was stopped by some stellar defensive play by Brownsville. With two on and one out in the 6th for the A’s, Jake Panzer lifted what looked to be a momentum swinging homer to left. Former Kewaskum ‘A’ and current Brownsville leftfielder Ryan Hall had different ideas as he brought back a for sure home run with a spectacular catch as he climbed the fence in left. The A’s went quietly for the final ten outs as they dropped to 18-8 overall. They remain in second place in the Rock River league behind division leader Rubicon. Ziegler took the loss tossing 5 innings and was relieved by Mitch Huffman who threw 4 scoreless innings. The Sarauer brothers, Adam and Austin, and Jason Strobel led the way for the A’s at the plate each going 2x4.
On Friday night several of the A’s took part in the Rock River All-Star game at Lebanon. Team members for the A’s included Dan Shea, Jason Strobel, Kurt Zagzebski, Matt Meisenheimer, Mitch Huffman and Jim Ziegler. Meisenheimer led the A’s going 1x2 with a double and Strobel chipped in going 1x2. Shea was 0x1 with a walk and Zagzebski finished 0x2. Ziegler tossed 2 innings giving up 2 runs, while Mitch Huffman picked up the win for the Northern Division tossing a scoreless 7th inning. The Northern Division All-Stars defeated the Southern All-Stars in comeback fashion 4-3. The A’s return to the field on Thursday as they take on Lebanon in Tri-County Night League action. A win over Lebanon secures a night league playoff spot for the A’s. On Friday night the A’s host the Hustisford Astros in West Bend at 7:30pm and on Sunday the A’s travel to Germantown for a Rock River game at 1:30pm.

Lathers, Panzer Shut Down Benders 3-0 The Kewaskum A’s knocked off the West Bend Benders 3-0 on Thursday night, due in large part to the sharp pitching of Jake Lathers and Jake Panzer. The A’s got just enough clutch hits to pull out the Night League victory and with the win improve their record to 18-7. The A’s broke through in the 3rd inning as Nick Whitty singled to lead off the inning. Adam Sarauer then drew a walk to put runners on 1st and 2nd. After a fielder’s choice, a one-out wild pitch put runners on 2nd and 3rd for Matt Meisenheimer. With the infield playing back, Meisenheimer grounded out to short allowing the A’s first run to come across.
The Benders threatened in the fourth as a leadoff single, followed by a bunt single put two runners on with nobody out. The A’s caught a break on the next batter though, as Nick Whitty picked off the runner on second base as he crept too far off. On the next pitch, Lathers induced a groundball double-play to end the inning. Dan Shea led off the sixth with a bloop double to center and Kurt Zagzebski followed with a walk to put two runners on again for the A’s. A perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Adam Martz put runners into scoring position with only one out. Jason Strobel took advantage as he ripped a single through a drawn-in infield to give the A’s a 2-0 lead. The A’s would add their last run in the inning when Strobel became caught in a run-down and Zagzebski came into score. Lathers picked up his first win of the season tossing 7 shutout innings to go along with 8 strkeouts and only 3 hits. Panzer picked up the save, tossing the final two innings.

A's Keep Pace With Division Leading Rubicon The A’s kept pace with Rock River division leader Rubicon, by defeating the Horicon Honkers 15-0 on Wednesday night. The A’s jumped ahead early and cruised to the seven inning victory. In the 1st inning, Jake Spaeth got things started with a leadoff double and would come around to score on Austin Sarauer’s RBI single. Jason Strobel followed later in the inning with a two-run home run to put the A’s up 3-0. The A’s tacked two more runs on in the 3rd inning. After Dan Shea reached on a single, Kurt Zagzebski narrowly missed a home run to straight-away center to put runners on 2nd and 3rd base. Adam Martz followed with a sacrifice fly to score Shea and Zagzebski would also score on the play to put the A’s up 5-0.
Kewaskum put the game away in the 5th as they sent 15 batters to the plate with 10 runs coming in to score. Strobel and Martz paced the A’s in the inning as they both collected two doubles in the inning. Strobel would end up 3x4 (2 2B, HR, 3 RBI) on the night and Dan Shea would go 3x5 (RBI). Jake Spaeth 2x5 (2B, RBI), Austin Sarauer 2x5 (2 RBI), Adam Martz 2x3 (2 2B, 3 RBI), and Jake Panzer 2x3 (RBI) also pitched in with solid nights at the plate. It was more than enough for Nick Whitty as he picked up his third win of the season. Whitty pitched 6 innings giving up 1 hit to go along with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. Jake Lathers tossed a perfect 7th inning striking out all three batters he faced. It was the 2nd time this season that the A’s have only given up one hit in a game to Horicon.
The A’s return to action on Thursday as they take on the West Bend Benders in Night League action at West Bend. The next night (July 10th) is the Rock River All-Star game in Lebanon (8:00pm). The following A’s were voted as starters in the All-Star game for the Northern Division: Dan Shea (3B), Jason Strobel (CF), and Kurt Zagzebski (DH). Kewaskum Closes in on Division Leader With Weekend Wins The A’s picked up two big Rock River wins over the weekend, as they moved within a ½ game of Rubicon for the Northern Division lead. On Saturday they knocked off second place Mayville 8-3 and on Sunday downed division leading Rubicon 14-1. Against Mayville, the A’s used a five run 3rd inning to propel themselves to the victory. With the game still scoreless and two outs in the third, Austin Sarauer ripped a bases loaded groundball directly through the shortstop’s legs allowing all three baserunners to come around to score. Kurt Zagzebski followed with a RBI double off the wall in left allowing Sarauer to score. Zagzebski would later score in the inning on a throw wide of third on a steal attempt putting the A’s up 5-0.
Zagzebski struck again in the fifth as he delivered a RBI single to score Dan Shea who had reached earlier on a single. Mayville cut the lead in half in the 6th as a two-run home run gave the Mallards some life. But the A’s took advantage of another Mayville error in the 7th to score a single run and Jason Strobel delivered a RBI single in the ninth for another run to make it 8-3. Mitch Huffman picked up the win tossing 8+ innings. Kurt Zagzebski led the way going 3x4 (2B, 2 RBI, SB) and Dan Shea chipped in with a 3x5 (SB) day.
On Sunday against Rubicon, the A’s jumped ahead right away in the 1st inning, scoring three runs. A Matt Meisenheimer walk and Jake Spaeth double put runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. This brought up Dan Shea who doubled down the right field scoring both runners and giving the A’s an early lead. Shea would eventually score too on a Zagzebski RBI groundout pushing the lead to 3-0. The A’s put four runs on the board in the 4th, pushing their lead to 7-0. Kewaskum took advantage of three walks in the inning and Jake Spaeth delivered a two-out 2 RBI double to cushion the lead.
Kewaskum put the game away for good in the 6th, as they sent ten batters to the plate and exploded for six more runs. Austin Sarauer led off the inning with a bomb of a home run to right, his second home run of the year. Jason Strobel then reached on a one-out single bringing up Adam Martz. Martz fell behind 0-2 in the count, but worked himself on with a 13 pitch at-bat walk. Adam Sarauer followed with a RBI single and Nick Whitty ripped a single of his own to load the bases. Meisenheimer drew the bases loaded walk to score another and Spaeth followed with his third double of the day scoring three more runs.
Jim Ziegler picked up the win on the mound tossing 8 effective innings, while giving up just one unearned run on 7 hits. Jake Lathers pitched a scoreless ninth in relief. Jake Spaeth led the way at the plate going 3x5 (3 2B, 5 RBI) and Jason Strobel stayed hot going 3x5 (RBI). The A’s take on the Horicon Honkers on Wednesday in a Rock River league game before taking a week off for an extended holiday break.

A's Pull Into 3rd Place in Rock Standings With Sunday's Win Kewaskum rebounded with a Rock River league victory on Sunday over the Hartford Hawks 11-1. The win moves the A’s into a third place tie with Oakfield and 1.5 games behind first place Rubicon. The A’s play both teams next weekend in a pivotal Rock River double-up weekend. Hartford jumped ahead to a 1-0 after their turn at bat in the 1st, but Kewaskum would rule the day scoring the final 11 runs.
In the 1st, Matt Meisenheimer led off with a single and scored on a Dan Shea RBI double. Shea would come around to score on Kurt Zagzebski’s single to put the A’s up 2-1 after one complete inning. The A’s tacked on three more runs in the 2nd inning. Mitch Huffman led off with a single and Jake Spaeth followed with a single to put runners on 1st and 3rd. Dan Shea lifted a sac-fly to score a run and Austin Sarauer followed with a RBI double to score another. Red-hot Kurt Zagzebski followed with his second RBI single of the day putting the A’s up 5-1.
In the 4th, Meisenheimer blasted a solo home run to left pushing the lead to 6-1. It was all A’s starter Jim Ziegler would need on this day, as he pitched an efficient 8 innings, giving up 5 hits, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts in recording his fifth win of the season. The A’s tacked on 5 more runs in the 8th inning as Dan Shea, Austin Sarauer, Jason Strobel and Adam Martz all collected RBI singles.
With the win the A’s improve to 14-7 on the season and 6-2 in the Rock River league. Leading the way at the plate were Jake Spaeth 4x6, Matt Meisenheimer 3x4 (HR, RBI), and Dan Shea (2B, 3 RBI). Strobel and Martz each chipped in with 3x5 days as the A’s pounded out 22 hits in the victory. The A’s next home game will be Sunday (June 28th) as they host first place Rubicon at 1:30pm in a game that could possibly push Kewaskum to the top of the league standings with a win.

Green Bay Pulls Away Late in NBC Tourney Game The A’s traveled to Menasha on Friday night to take on the Green Bay Storm in a NBC single elimination tournament game. In a back-and-forth game, Kewaskum found themselves on the wrong end of the 6-3 game. The A’s jumped ahead 1-0 in the 1st. Shane O’Hagan walked to leadoff the game and scored on errant throw later in the inning. With the scored tied at 1-1 in the 3rd, Mitch Huffman led off with a double to leftcenter. Huffman would score on a James Goodfellow single down the third base line later in the inning putting the A’s up 2-1.
Green Bay went ahead 3-2 in the 6th, but the A’s responded back to tie it up in the bottom half of the inning. Austin Sarauer struck out to leadoff the 6th inning, but reached first when the ball went to the backstop on strike three. Sarauer would score later in the inning on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3. In the same inning, with runners on 1st and 2nd, Adam Martz ripped a line drive to the second basemen that was caught. The second basemen quickly flipped a throw to first base to double off the runner there and end the Kewaskum threat.
The Storm went ahead for good in the 7th putting up three runs off starting and losing pitcher Mitch Huffman. The A’s put two runners on with one out in the bottom half of the final inning, but were unable to push across any runs and were eliminated from the tournament. James Goodfellow led the way at the plate going 3x4 (RBI), while Mitch Huffman chipped in with a 2x2 (2B) game. Matt Meisenheimer also was 2x3 on the night.

Lannon Tops Kewaskum in Nite League Slugfest The A’s dropped their third consecutive Tri-County Night League on Thursday to the Lannon Stonemen 12-8. The A’s raced ahead to a 4-0 lead and clung to an 8-6 lead into the 5th, but Lannon scored the final 6 runs in winning by a final of 12-8. In the 1st, Austin Sarauer collected an RBI single and newcomer James Goodfellow lifted a sac-fly to score another run. The A’s struck again in the second, when Adam Sarauer walked with one and Mitch Huffman singled to put two runners on. Dan Shea then ripped a 2 RBI double to the rightcenter field gap to put the A’s up 4-0.
Lannon answered back over the next three innings scoring 6 runs off Kewaskum starter Nick Whitty. Trailing 6-4 in the 5th, Adam Martz reached on an error with two outs and Adam Sarauer walked to put two runners on. That brought up Matt Meisenheimer who dropped a RBI double to right to cut the lead to one. Huffman followed with an opposite field three-run home run to put the A’s up 8-6. Panzer, on in relief, retired the first batter in the 5th, before giving up a single. Panzer induced the next batter into a groundball back to the mound, but the throw to second base to turn the possible double play sailed wide of the base and the A’s were left with two runners on with still one out. Lannon took advantage of the miscue as they would go on to score four runs in the inning as the A’s aided matters with 3 errors in the inning.
The A’s were unable to mount a comeback and would go on to lose their third Tri-County game in a row. The A’s drop to 5-3 in night league with two games remaining. The A’s record drops to 13-6 on the season. Jake Panzer took the loss in relief, while Mitch Huffman led the way at the plate going 3x5 (HR, 3 RBI).

A's Fall to Johnson Creek, But Rebound With Victory Over Slinger The A’s picked up a pivotal Rock River game on Sunday over Slinger 18-5. The win improves the A’s league record to 5-2 on the year. Slinger jumped ahead early before the A’s stormed back to win in convincing fashion. Slinger added single runs in the first and second innings to jump ahead 2-0 before the A’s finally broke through. In the 4th, Dan Shea and Austin Sarauer started the inning with back-to-back singles and Shea would eventually score on a Kurt Zagzebski RBI single. It was the first of four hits and 5 RBI’s on the day for Zagzebski.
The A’s took the lead in the fifth as Austin Sarauer’s RBI triple put the A’s on top 3-2. Zagzebski followed that up with another RBI single to put the A’s up 4-2. The A’s exploded for five runs in the 6th, as Adam Sarauer and Jake Panzer led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Consecutive errors then led to three Kewaskum runs and Zagzebski finished the inning off with another RBI single.
The A’s put up nine more runs over the final two innings as Strobel and Zagzebski each hit home runs. Strobel’s third home run of the year came with two runners on and Zagzebski’s was a two-run home run, his second of the year. Mitch Huffman picked up the win on the mound tossing 6 innings. He improves to 3-2 on the year. Zagzebski led the way at the plate going 4x5 with 5 RBI’s. Dan Shea chipped in with a 3x5, 3 RBI’s and 5 runs scored and Jake Panzer had a 3x5 day as well.
On Saturday, the A’s dropped a Tri-County game to Johnson Creek 12-8. Walks doomed Kewaskum pitching all day, and the A’s were unable to dig themselves completely out from early deficits. Johnson Creek jumped ahead 4-0 into the third inning before the A’s stormed back. Kurt Zagzebski’s bases loaded double put the A’s up 5-4 after three complete innings. Johnson Creek tied it at 5-5 in the fourth and put up five more runs in the fifth to jump ahead to the 10-5 lead. The A’s attempt to mount a rally failed as they left the bases loaded in the fourth and sixth innings.
John Holt took the loss in relief for the A’s, while Zagzebski led the way at the plate going 2x5 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Dan Shea, Adam Martz and Jake Spaeth all contributed with 2 hit days as well. The A’s now stand at 12-5 overall and return to action on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and Sunday this week. Wednesday’s game is in Plymouth against the Plymouth Flames at 6:30pm.
