Knights Management Consider Options for '08 September 27, 2007 --
Kokomo CFD Knights management will be meeting with sponsors and talking with players in the upcoming days to decide the team’s fate for next year. It has already been decided that the team will still be around but the course of direction for the organization is still unknown. The two main leagues in Indiana are the Midwest Prospects Baseball League (MPBL), featuring most of Indiana’s elite teams and the Indianapolis Adult Baseball League (IABL) that the Knights tried out in their inaugural season.
The IABL is ruled by the Indianapolis Stallions, a team that is arguably the top team in the state year in and year out. The Indianapolis Hurricanes and Indy Dodgers also fight for league supremacy every year. After an unsuccessful year in the league last season, the Knights would have to enlist for reinstatement to play in the IABL. The MPBL is arguably the top league in the state. A collegiate/semi-pro level league, the MPBL features most of Indiana’s top teams such as the South Bend Senators, Lafayette Lumberjacks, Warsaw Indians and more. If the Knights are formed of mainly collegiate players again in 2008, the MPBL would seem like the best choice of league. The league plays a larger, more compact schedule than the IABL, and is built for younger teams while the IABL is built for older teams with less available time. These are just two of the options that are out there for the Knights.
A few more options are being considered and it is likely the Knights will make a decision within the next month or two. The Knights finished the 2007 season with a 16-5 loss to the Kokomo Braves. The squad had an 11-18 overall record and a 4-14 league record.
Note: The Knights website will undergo a few changes over the off season. As of now a new header has been added to give the site a more professional look and the site has been set to a specific size rather than always adapting to the screen. This gives more options on what can be done with the site without things overlapping or lining up incorrectly. Keep tuned in to the site to get all the latest information.
Big Country Reactivated and Ready For Business August 14, 2007 --
Caleb Abbott, better known by his nickname Big Country, will be on the field this weekend when the CFD Knights go head-to-head with the Kokomo Braves. Abbott has been out for the a few weeks healing from a knee injury that kept him from walking for several days and slowly recovered. He is back up and moving now and ready to play. Today Abbott spoke with Manager Robbie Pattengale on the phone and both agreed it is time for Abbott to return to the Knight's active roster. Through five games this season "Big Country" has posted a .421 on-base percentage and is a solid defensive first baseman who can scoop up anything in the dirt and his 6'5 body makes him a big target for the other infielders. "We are glad to have Country back. He will be a big piece of the puzzle for our team and for us to get back on track." Abbott has also proven himself to be a solid short relief pitcher that uses a one-finger fastball that slices in at right handed hitters; but he has yet to hit the mound this season and it is unlikely he will see time on the hill in the near future because of the knee injury. The Knights next game is Friday night at Hummel Park in Plainfield. Kokomo takes on the Braves in a game that carries a 7:00 PM start time.
Wooley Lands In Different Independent League July 26, 2007 --
Written by Bryan Gaskins of the Kokomo Tribune -Robbie Wooley has experienced his share of highs and lows during his professional career. This week brought another ride on the roller-coaster of emotions.
“I wasn’t really sure what to think,” Wooley said of his initial reaction to the trade. “First off, I didn’t know if I wanted to drive all the way to Sioux City, Iowa, to play baseball, but then I realized that it was a job for me and it was a starting spot. They said I was going to get a chance to pitch a lot. And, I knew there was only a month left in the season, so I went ahead and took my chances.”
The Miners informed Wooley of the trade Monday afternoon. He returned home to Kokomo that night, grabbed about five hours of sleep and then hit the road on Tuesday. He drove 101/2 hours and arrived at Lewis & ClarkExplorersPark in time to make a relief appearance against the St. Joe Blacksnakes. He worked 11/3 innings to cap off a whirlwind stretch. The Blacksnakes won 5-4 in 14 innings.
“I felt very comfortable on the mound,” he said. “There were not nearly as many people in the stands [compared to Miners’ games], but the fans seem to be into the game a little more which is cool.
“I feel like I am going to have a lot of fun with this team. There are a lot of good guys on the team.”
The Explorers led the North Division through Tuesday’s games with a 13-6 record.
“From what I’ve been told, this league is better than the Frontier League because there are older, more experienced players,” said Wooley, a former Milwaukee Brewers farmhand.
The Explorers plan on using Wooley as a starter. He is scheduled to make his first start for the club Friday against the St. Paul Saints in the second game of a three-game series at St. Paul. Wooley noted the Explorers carry fewer pitchers than his former team, which means he will have the opportunity to pitch more innings.
Wooley went 4-2 with a 3.51 ERA in 10 appearances for Southern Illinois. He worked 511/3 innings, allowed 45 hits and 33 walks and struck out 42. He earned a spot in the Frontier League all-star game, which was played on July 11 in Florence, Ky.
Jeff Trueblood And Ryan Moore Selected To NL All-Stars July 19, 2007 --
Kokomo CFD Knights catcher Ryan Moore and starting pitcher Jeff Trueblood have been selected to the 2007 IABL National League All-Stars. Ryan Moore, who gained the NAIA Gold Glove Award last month, added to his list of accolades in 2007. Moore leads the IABL with an outstanding .800 batting average in league play. He has 13 RBI’s and scored 11 runs with 16 hits in just 20 at-bats. He also holds a .800 on-base percentage and a 1.200 slugging percentage in league play. “Ryan just stays hot. People keep saying his bats going to calm down soon, he can’t keep this up forever; but he just keeps going up there and keeps getting hits.” said Manager Robbie Pattengale. Moore is also one of the best defensive catchers in the league. He will be out of the town the weekend of the All-Star festivities but was honored he was picked for the event.
CFD Knights starting pitcher Jeff Trueblood was also elected to the National League squad. Trueblood has proven himself the ace of the Knights staff over the past few weeks. He brings an upper-80s fastball and some off speed pitches to keep hitters off balance. “Jeff is a huge arm for us. He has a good fastball but what really makes him succeed is keeping hitters off balance. When he mixes his pitches up like he did last Sunday the hitters just aren’t sure what’s coming in.” Pattengale said. Trueblood has thrown 20 innings during league play and has struck out 24 hitters and given up 18 hits. He holds a 1-2 record and a 4.05 ERA. Overall this season Trueblood has thrown 31 innings and has 42 strikeouts while walking 23 with a 2-2 record. Trueblood was originally selected as the National League Alternate but Knights General Manager Robbie Pattengale was contacted later by league officials and told Trueblood was on the team.
Jason Pattengale and Ben Zachary received all-star consideration as well. The event, which will be held at the University of Indianapolis on Saturday July 28th, will begin with the Homerun Derby (benefiting Play Ball Indiana) at 2:45 PM followed by half an hour time interval and then the All-Star game at 4:15 PM.
Wooley Selected To Frontier League All-Stars July 6, 2007 --
Former Knight pitcher Robbie Wooley, who started with the Knights at the beginning of the season, was selected for the independent Frontier LeagueAll-Star game. Wooley is enjoying a solid season with the Southern Illinois Miners. He owns a 4-1 record and a 2.31 ERA. In 47 innings of work, he has struck out 39 batters and allowed just 35 hits. In an over the phone interview with the Knights Wooley noted his fastball has reached a low 90's velocity and his two seam had good movement. He also throws batters off with a hard breaking curveball.
Wooley will play for the South squad in the game which is set for Wednesday in Florence, Kentucky. Note: Wooley was a former Taylor High School standout and was drafted in the sixth round of the 2003 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers and played four seasons with the Brewers and eventually made it to the club's "A" level team. An injury caused the Brewers to release them before he signed to play with the Knights earlier this season. After a tryout for many professional scouts in Chicago Wooley made a deal with the Miners to sign a contract if he was not signed by a MLB organization before a set date.
Wooley Succeeding In Pros; Moore And Others Rack Up Honors June 26, 2007 --
Wooley quickly proved himself to be the real deal in Marion, Illinois. Wooley is the ace of the Southern Illinois Miner's pitching staff and is making a name for himself again in professional baseball. He started the season with the CFD Knights before signing to play with the Frontier League newcomer at the beautiful brand new Rent One Park Stadium. With the Knights Wooley started two games and posted a loss and a no decision. He threw 11 innings and struck out 13 while walking just six and giving up seven runs, five earned, which was good for a 4.09 ERA. Now in professional baseball Wooley is putting up all-star statistics. He has started six games and holds a 4-0 record on the mound. In 34 innings he has fanned 28 and only walked 14. He holds a shimmering 2.12 ERA and has held his opponents to a .229 batting average. "This is great to see. Everyone knew Rob would get back and get his career back on track. He is a great pitcher and he's heading in the right direction." said Knights manager and friend Robbie Pattengale. The Miners are 18-14 on the season and play the Evansville Otters tonight at 7:05 PM at Rent One Park Stadium.
Ryan Moore collected a handful of postseason awards after leading Indiana Weselayn behind and at the plate. Behind the plate Moore took the NAIA National Gold Glove Award. He had a .986 fielding percentage and threw out 19 of 32 baserunners who tried to steal. "He was an ironman," said Indiana Wesleyan coach Mark DeMichael. "He had some injuries and he played right through them because we had no other catcher. I remember telling him once that we'd get him out of there and he said, 'No, I'm staying in.' He is as tough as they come." At IWU Moore led the offense in several categories including batting average (.366), doubles (11), triples (two), and homers (four). He hit in the leadoff spot and had an outstanding .494 on-base percentage. Moore also picked up All Conference, All Regional VII, and NCCAA All-Midwest honors. Harden, Beachy, and Zachary also made the NCCAA All-Midwest Team. Harden batted .290 at IWU with eight doubles, three homers, and 26 RBI. Zachary also hit .290. Beachy had a nice season at the plate as well. He batted .326 with 10 doubles, three homers, and led the team with 33 RBI and 29 runs.
Beachy also had a nice season on the mound before a forearm injury slowed him down. He went 1-1 with three saves and a 3.86 ERA after 16 innings of work. IWU's Coach DeMichael spoke highly of Beachy's pitching. "He is getting to the point where he is a pro prospect on the mound. We took a spring trip to California and the one game we won was against Point Loma Nazarene, which was ranked in the top 10 in the [NAIA national poll] at the time. He came in to close the game in the ninth inning and struck the side out and they had him on the gun at 91-93 miles per hour. He was bringing it." Beachy is still taking it easy with his arm after the injury. He is expected to get back on the mound within the next couple of weeks for the Knights. "We will take it easy with him." said Knights manager Robbie Pattengale "He has so much going for him. When we feel he is ready and he feels he is ready we will start putting him in and keep him on a low pitch count. He has gotten back to playing third base and his arm is getting better."
The Knights will return to the field next Saturday when they travel to Michigan City for a doubleheader with the hometown Michigan City Stars. Start time for the games is 1:00 PM.
No Innings Played Between Knights and Portland Rockets June 8, 2007 --
The Knights home game at Kingsway Sports Academy tonight against the Portland Rockets was not played on account of confusion in Portland. Portland as undergone several managerial changes this season and some schedule confusion caused the highly respected team to be unprepared to make the trip to Kokomo. The Knights Saturday doubleheader with the Michigan City All-Stars has also been postponed because of employees being focused on the high school semi-state that is being played at CFD Investments Stadium in Highland Park. The Knights will continue action this Sunday at Pike High School against the Kokomo Braves at 3:30 PM.
Knights Gearing Up For Semi-ProTournament June 14, 2007 --
Your Kokomo CFD Knights are preparing for the second annual Indiana Semi-Pro Baseball Association's Hall of Fame Tournament. The tournament features nine of the best semi-pro teams from around the state including the Knights and the Kokomo CFD Saints (1988-2002) who have been reassembled for an annual reunion weekend. From the Knights roster Matt Burthay, Ryan Moore, Brent Owens, Kevin Connolly, Jeff Trueblood, Zach Rodman, and Brandon Boles are scheduled to play with the Saints in the tournament. Trueblood is scheduled to pitch against his own team when the Knights and Saints meet to kick off the tournament Friday night. The Knights will play a doubleheader Saturday starting with a 10:00 AM game at Kingsway Sports Academy against the Warsaw Indians and a later game against the Geneva Cardinals. Gametime for the Knights/Cardinals game has not yet been determined. Due to the Kokomo High School Wildcats baseball team playing in the state championship, the game originally scheduled for 6:00 PM will be moved so players can go support their family and friends at Victory Field in the 4A State Championship. The Knights, along with the Indianapolis Dodgers will not compete Sunday in the finals if eligible because of league games to be played in Indianapolis. Kokomo will take on the Indianapolis Orioles Sunday at 3:30 PM at Lutheran High School. "With four games this weekend we will really be tested." said player/manager Robbie Pattengale. "We will be playing some of the top teams in the state and some of the big pieces to our team will be playing elsewhere. We just need to step up our game and start playing like we can." After falling 7-5 Sunday to the Braves the Knights overall season record fell to 5-4 and 3-4 in league play.

Wooley Returns To Professional Ball May 8, 2007 --
Knights pitcher Robbie Wooley left today to head to Marion, Illinois, where he will pick up his professional career with the Southern Illinois Miners in pursuit of joining a major league organization. The Miners added Wooley in hopes that he will help them compete for a championship in their first season in the Frontier League, arguably the most successful independent league in the country. Wooley started his professional career after he was drafted in the sixth round of the 2003 MLB draft. He pitched four years in professional baseball with the Milwaukee Brewers organization and held a 4.53 ERA. After moving up to the West Virginia Power "A" level team Wooley was struck by injury and the team felt it was best to release him. The Frontier League is said by many baseball analyst to be an equivalent to "A" level ball.
"This will be a new experience for me and it will be fun to play with a bunch of guys who are trying to make it after college and who are adapting to pro ball." Wooley said in a interview with the Knights. "I'm excited to get back somewhere where I got the chance to get back to where I was and I get to play everyday." The Miners have a media day on tomorrow for families and kids and ESPN cameras are expected to be there focused on one of Wooley's teammates. One of the most famous little league players in baseball history will join Wooley on the Miners pitching staff. Danny Almonte, who accidentally played in the 12 and under division when he was 14 years of age. Knights manager Robbie Pattengale wished Wooley the best, "It was great to have Robbie play with us. Over the past year we've become good friends and the Knights are glad to see him move on and get back into professional baseball and we wish him the best." Pattengale said.
Wooley signed to play with the Knights last December. After also signing to play with the Miners, Wooley was advised by his coach to pitch for the Knights up until he left. Finally being healed up from his injury, Wooley threw 11 innings, gave up seven runs on five hits, while fanning 13 and walking just six with a 4.09 ERA after two starts with the Knights. Congratulations to Robbie Wooley and good luck!

Adams Named New Assistant Head Coach April 13, 2007 --

Adams is very well respected in the Kokomo baseball community and coaches at the high school and legion levels. Adams will now take a leadership position at a higher level of baseball. "I am excited to see this team come together over the next few months and bring a winner back to Kokomo. I just hope to be there for Robbie and be a sounding board for him on anything he may need from me. At this level I don't think the players really need any instruction from us on getting better, we just need to make sure we put everyone in a spot where they will be most successful on a team and personal level." Adams said. Adams is ready for the position and the Knights are ready to open their season.
The Knights open the season up this weekend against the Indianapolis White Sox at Trinity Park in Noblesville.
Knights Release 2007 Schedule March 31, 2007 --
The Kokomo CFD Knights released the team's 2007 regular season schedule today. With eight Knight players finishing up their collegiate seasons the team will have a tough test the first three-four weeks of the season. The Knights will play the Indianapolis White Sox of the IABL 28+ division in the team's only interdivisional game to open up the season. The April 15th opener will start at 3:30 PM at Trinity Park in Noblesville. A week later on April 22nd the Knights head to Roncalli for what will potentially be the team's toughest test of the season, the defending IABL and Midwest champion Indy Stallions. "Obviously, we wish we could have our complete roster for the Stallions, but one of our missions is to supply a competetive place close to home for local collegiate players to play and we know their seasons overlap with ours." Manager Robbie Pattengale said. The Knights then prepare for the Indianapolis Red Sox and potentially the Indianapolis Hurricanes without its collegiate players. It is possible for some collegiate players to be back for the game with the defending National League champion Hurricanes. The Knights will have their complete roster for their May 18th CFD Investments Stadium Kokomo opener against an unannounced opponent.
The rest of the Knights schedule features the Indiana Semi-Pro Hall of Fame tournament at the Knight's CFD Investments Stadium and several games with some of the states top competition including the South Bend Senators, Portland Rockets, and Northwest Indiana Patriots. "Everything is ready to go now and we believe we are set for a successful first run. We believe we have a team that can compete for the IABL championship." Pattengale said. "Opening day is just two weeks away."

High Expectations, Knights Ranked 12th February 10, 2007 --
The Indiana Semi-Pro Baseball Association (ISPBA) has ranked the CFD Knights twelfth in the preseason top fifteen poll. "It is an honor to be ranked. We are a new team so I didn't expect us to be ranked in the preseason poll but we were asked to give a preview of our team to the ISPBA's president, Victor Canales, and he liked the makeup of our team and the direction we are headed." said General Manager Robbie Pattengale. "I think the addition of Robbie Wooley and signing about ten other great players really got us the base for being ranked and even our prospective players helped. But we can't think about it too much right now, we need to sign these other guys and get our team together and make sure everything is organized." The ISPBA brings out new polls about every two weeks during the season. The Indianapolis Adult Baseball League's (IABL) defending champion Indy Stallions are ranked sixth, the runner-up Indianapolis Dodgers are ranked eighth, and the defending IABL National League champion Indianapolis Hurricanes are ranked two spots behind the Knights at number fourteen. The IABL is expected to be tougher than ever this season and the four ranked teams in the preseason poll is second among Indiana leagues.
How Are the Knights Preparing For Their Inaugural Season? February 1, 2007 --
Many fans who desire a winning team in Kokomo might be wondering how are the Knights preparing for their inaugural season, who is playing collegiate ball, and where are the Knights training at. The Knights train every week at the Kingsway Sports Academy (3116 W. Boulevard, Kokomo, Indiana), which features a set of baseball diamonds in the back, hitting and pitching facilities, a weight and cardiovascular room, a very comfortable lounge and concession stand, and for other purposes, a miniature golf course. This facility gives the Knights the ultimate training facility for their winter and spring workouts to prepare for there season.
The Knights players gather there every week for hitting practice and the pitchers hit the cages to throw. General Manager Robbie Pattengale enjoys the practices. "Its good to get together and stay on top of our games. Plus we have some guys who have never played together before and this is a good chance for everyone to get to know each other. With Zach (Rodman), Brandon (Boles), Robbie Wooley and the older guys mixing with myself and Joe Branch and with the even younger guys in Jason (Pattengale), Dustin (Jenkins), and Aaron (Ringley) we have some of the best players coming out of Kokomo from three different baseball generations." he said.
At this point, Jason Pattengale and Joseph Branch are the only Knights currently playing collegiately this spring (Ringley and Jenkins played at Ancilla College this fall). Pattengale (Jason) has been preparing with his Ball State University teammates for a their trip to play down south in a few weeks. "We know Jason will probably be much improved and ready to play when he returns to our lineup and he will be able to step in and contribute right away." Manager Robbie Pattengale said. Branch will be playing his sophomore season at Ancilla College in Donaldson, Indiana. Branch plays third base for Ancilla. He and his teammates have also been preparing for their season opener with Grace College towards the end of the month.
