Lady Avalanche Post First Victory
AVALANCHE SUCCESSFUL ON HOME OPENER

Hamilton, ON – The Hamilton Lady Avalanche, 1-3-0, dominated their first ever home opener, scoring three (3) times against the tired Sudbury Canadians and earning a W-League win. The win moves Hamilton out of the Northern Division basement, 3 points ahead of the Canadians.
Avalanche Keeper Stacey Van Boxmeer, a veteran of the Women’s National team, was pleased with her team’s victory noting, “This was a great team effort. We are really starting to get a feel for each other’s playing styles.”
The majority of the first half was spent in the Canadians end, as Hamilton came out strong, attacking the ball and pushing the pace. Hamilton had five quality opportunities in the first 10 minutes but was unable to put the ball in the net. The Lady Avalanche continued to have trouble finding the back of the net; Danya Barsolona and Michelle Edgar were unable to convert on numerous opportunities. A handball inside the box by Sudbury’s Goal Keeper Julia Boschetto set up Chiara Greco for a penalty shot and a 1-0 lead for Hamilton before the half.
The second half started much like the first with Hamilton controlling the tempo of the game and applying heavy pressure but, unable to finish the play. That all changed in the 58th minute when Edgar’s cross from the far corner curled into the net over the outstretched arms of Boschetto. A quick substitution by Avalanche Coach Billy McKenna saw Heather MacDougall scoring in the 63rd minute as she ran down the right side, cut inside the defender and blasted a low shot off the post and in.
Mckenna was impressed with his team’s play saying, “the players were determined to break into a win on their home turf and worked hard together to make it happen.”
Hamilton looked to add to their lead in the 83rd minute as Brittany Bisnott split the defenders but, was unable to defeat Boschetto from 8 yards out.
The Lady Avalanche travel to Sudbury on June 10th, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. determined to come home with their second straight victory.
The next home game is at 12:00 noon at Brian Timmis Stadium against the Toronto Lynx on June 14, 2006.

Hamilton Lady Avalanche Acquire W-League Franchise
Tuesday August 2, 2005(Hamilton, Ontario) Lady Avalanche has acquired a franchise in the W-League of the United Soccer Leagues and will begin play in the 2006 season. The W-League is recognized as North America’s best women’s development organization. The W-League also gives college players the chance to play along side of established professionals while maintaining their college eligibility. The Greater Hamilton area known as The Golden Horseshoe has an abundance of female talent that is ready to compete with some of the best women’s soccer players and teams in North America. The Hamilton Lady Avalanche is a dedicated organization in the development of women’s soccer starting at the grassroots level. This dedication and training will enhance the youth player base that is the foundation of women’s soccer players for years to come. The team looks forward to the 2006 season so as to start rivalries against teams such as the Toronto Lady Lynx and Ottawa Fury. Tammy Gage director of the W-League states “The USL W-League is very excited about the addition of the Hamilton Lady Avalanche for the 2006 season. As North America's best and most complete women's development organization, the W-League is committed to finding new franchises that will compete at a high level. We have every confidence that the Hamilton organization will continue the W-League tradition of providing a competitive atmosphere for North America's best college players as well as international stars.” “This is a welcome addition to women’s sports for the Hamilton and surrounding area,” says Valdi Greco, a spokesperson for the Hamilton Lady Avalanche.
