Double Take
Patterson twins kick Vincent girls soccer team in right direction
By Mike Copper(mike.copper@timesnews.com)
Which one is Morgyn Patterson?
Which one is Meghyn Patterson?
Those were questions likely posed by fans at some point during Strong Vincent's 2007 girls soccer season.
They weren't the only ones who had a hard time identifying the twin sisters.
"Teammates called out our numbers," Morgyn Patterson said. "Other than that, no one could really tell us apart on the field."
Ironic, then, that the two did stand apart last year. They were huge reasons the Colonels set a school record for victories in a season (eight) and nearly qualified for the District 10 Class AAA tournament.
The Pattersons are back. So is optimism for Vincent's new season, one that coach Mike Romeo has already dubbed Project Playoffs.
The Colonels began their quest for that goal with Monday's first official PIAA practice at the Hamilton Elementary School soccer field. They have scrimmages scheduled there the next two Saturdays, then open regular season play Sept. 3 at Bradford.
"We really feel tha,t with the right combination of players, we can be successful and make a run at the postseason," Romeo said. "With the number of teams in (Class) AAA, we think there's an opportunity if (the district) goes to an expanded bracket. But we already hope to be one of the top four in our region."
Vincent (8-11, 7-9 Region 3) fell two games short of that dream last fall. The return of the Pattersons, now juniors, should make double-digit victories a realistic goal.
Morgyn Patterson (37 goals, 10 assists in '07) was voted Region 3 player of the year by the region's coaches. The Colonels forward also was an all-state selection by the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association.
Meghyn Patterson didn't approach her sister's numbers, but was far from shabby. As a second-team all-region selection at forward, she totaled 11 goals and nine assists before an injury sidelined her for Vincent's last two games.
Romeo raved about the Pattersons' impact not just for the Colonels, but for Erie School District soccer.
"What they've done for the rest of our city athletes is show that with proper technique and training, they can be just as successful," he said. "Morgyn and Meghyn have become tremendous role models and helped make our program stronger."
The Pattersons are aware of their status with the Colonels, and beyond. They're also humbled by it.
"It is a ... blessing," Morgyn Patterson said. "I am so happy. Up until now, I never really realized how people look up to us."

Morgyn Patterson: Region 4 Player of the Year; District 10 All Region Team Selection
For the second year in a row, Morgyn Patterson was crowned the Region 4 Player of the Year. Selected from a talented list of regional players, Morgyn's dynamic scoring ability won her the votes of the other Region coaches.

What a year it was for Morgyn. The Lady Colonels are proud of you.

JV Program Nets Historic Win Over Mercyhurst
October 18, 2007 --
Call it David vs. Goliath. Call it inexperience vs. experience. Call it any way you want, but make sure you call it a victory. A Strong Vincent victory that is. After a scoreless first half, the Lady Colonels kept the pressure on and were able to score twelve minutes into the second half. Freshman Brisia Herrera took a pass from freshman Emily Kessler and beat the MPS goalkeeper to the ball. A delicately placed flick shot over the goalkeeper found the net from inside the 18 yard box. From there the defense took over and the offense kept applying enough pressure to keep Mercyhurst at bay and off the scoresheet. Final score SV 1 - MPS 0. SV freshman goalkeeper Brianna Opperman recorded the shutout. The post game smiles and joyous tears proved that on any given day, great things can happen. While Mercyhurst may have the better skilled and experienced team - evident by their record and prior victory over SV - the heart, determination, and never-say-quit attitude of the Lady Colonels prevailed. Just as David slayed Goliath, the Lady Colonels sunk the Lady Lakers.

Morgyn Patterson: Erie Times News Female Athlete of the Week
October 31, 2007 --
(Article published Oct 31, 2007 - Erie Times News "VARSITY" sports insert)
Patterson finishes with flurry of goals
From staff reports
Strong Vincent sophomore Morgyn Patterson ended her season a week ago with a five-goal game in a 6-1 win over East.
Patterson, part of a one-two scoring punch with her twin sister, Meghyn, accomplished that on her own. Meghyn missed the Colonels' final two games with an injury.
"We have a good connection," said Morgyn about how she and her sister play together.
Strong Vincent coach Mike Romeo said that Morgyn's five-goal game was quite a feat considering the Warriors defense was intent on stopping her.
"They keyed on (Morgyn) and she still managed to score all those goals," Romeo said.
Morgyn had only one goal in the first half against East, but broke out after the intermission.
"In the beginning, I didn't think I would score, but I hung in there and got a goal," she said of her play in the first half. "Coach (Romeo) talked to me, and I came up with four goals in the second half."
Morgyn Patterson ended her season as one of the top scorers in District 10. She had 37 goals and 10 assists for 84 points.
