Lightning 96- IYSL Championship game Winners
August 4, 2007  --   San Juan's Lightning 96 team wins the Copa de Refrescos championship tournament in Sacramento.

After a long Spring season, the 96 boys found themselves as one of the top four teams in the IYSL U-12 division. After winning the Semi-final game 2-1 against a very tough (and clearly older)team the previous week, the 96 boys were in the championship game playing against a very athletic and aggressive Santa Rosa team. The 96 boys led by Coach Paul Arellanes were able to score first on a very nice assist by midfielder Kenan Mesic to Ryan Erlichman. In spite of very aggressive and determined defensive play the Santa Rosa team scored an equalizer midway into the first half. Even though Niko Arellanes was asked to play keeper in the abscence of the regular starter, this was one of the few times the Santa Rosa team was able to get a ball past him. His brilliant play in the box clearly frustrated the opposition. Late in the first half, following a picture perfect cross by Logan Dearborn, Brian Looper put the ball in the net with a terrific left footed strike, enabling San Juan to take a 2-1 lead into half time.

In the second half, Santa Rosa scored a tough goal, again equalizing the score. To the credit of outstanding defensive play by an agile Miles Silvas, Greg Kay, and tough Matt Novotny and John Bovill, this was the last time the Santa Rosa team would threaten Niko in the goal. Niko continued to gather balls directed into the box and started offensive drives with long punts to Austin Moen and Nikki Kolokotronis who controlled the midfield and effectively directed the ball to the streaking forwards like speedy right wing Garrett Greathouse and the outside midfielders.

Halfway into the second half, with some nifty footwork, Ryan McGee was able to feed a perfect pass into open space behind the Santa Rosa defenders enabling Ryan Erlichman to score the go-ahead goal into an upper corner of the net. A few minutes later John Bovill, having moved up into an offensive position, stole the ball from a Santa Rosa defender in front of their goal and with two quick touches pushed the ball past the diving keeper into the back of the net. This insurance goal all but sealed the championship for the 96 boys.

In spite of a few challenges easily repulsed by the solid defenders, including heroic efforts by Kay and Bovill, both nursing foot and ankle injuries, and Greathouse tasked to assist defensively, all that remained was for the Lightning to continue to demonstrate Coach Arrellanes' ball control style of play. Dominating the time of possession in the last ten minutes of play, San Juan easily kept the ball away from their opponents and ran out the clock for the 4-2 Championship victory.

The 96 boys received individual trophies, tournament uniforms, pins and a large team "Cup". They are now eligible to represent Northern California in the Tournament of Champions to be held in Los Angeles in September. Congratulations to our U-12 Boys team.
