UPDATE: Antesberger & Horn are selected to MidAm team to compete at USA Hockey's U-13 National Festival
Junior High players Nate Antesberger and Tommy Horn recently tried out for USA Hockey MidAm District Select 13 Camp(1996 birth year) in Columbus Ohio. They attended a skills session and played in two games. 140+ other skaters from all around the MidAm District were in attendance. Both Nate and Tommy made the first cut and were invited to attend the Select 13 Camp held at Penn State University this June. This camp is also considered a tryout for the final MidAm team that will compete at the National level late this summer. GOOD LUCK to both BG skaters.
Junior High player, Tyler Broderick recently tried out for USA Hockey MidAm District Select 11/12 year old camp. He also attended a skills session and participated in games with boys from PA, OH, WV and IN. As a result of his showing at tryouts Ty was invited and will be attending camp at Kent State University later this summer. Congrats!

BG Hockey Player to attend World Championships
Bishop Guilfoyle hockey player, Nate Antesberger, has been chosen with his Junior Penguins hockey team to participate in the "World Championships of Pee-Wee Hockey" in Quebec City from February 11 - 22nd. This event is the "little league world series" of ice hockey. Nate is honored to be the first ice hockey player from Altoona, PA to participate in the World Championship.
The competitors are between the ages of 11 and 12 years old (1996 birth year), coming from up to 16 different countries and over 230,000 fans will be in attendance. The World Championship is legendary as a stepping-stone for hockey players and teams. Since its inception in the 1950's, more than 600 participants have gone on to careers in the National Hockey League: Mario Lemieux, Eric Lindross, Guy Lafleur, Mark Howe, Wayne Gretzky are just a small sample. But that is not the over-riding point. We want Nate to have a chance to represent this region and compete at the highest level of his sport.
This is a once-in-a-young-lifetime cultural experience. Nate will 'billet' (board) with a Canadian family in Quebec for the duration of the tournament. He will attend cultural and educational events, learn about life in Canada, and play against teams from all over the world, meeting and interacting with those competitors off the ice as well as on.
There is no way that we will ever be able to adequately thank you for your support. But, Nate will work hard, compete hard, show lots to determination, and represent you, Bishop Guilfoyle Hockey, and Central Pennsylvania, to the very best of his abilities!
THANK YOU!

The Bishop Guilfoyle Ice Hockey Alumni game has been renamed the Jean Simon Lavoie Memorial Alumni game.
This name change was announced at the Bishop Guilfoyle Ice Hockey Club’s holiday showcase event that attracted more than 300 fans. The event included scrimmage games involving its primary-elementary players and its two junior high teams along with the annual Alumni game. For the event, free refreshments of cookies brought by the BG Hockey Family and made-to-order hot chocolates were provided.
During the ceremony at the Alumni game, David Langguth, former president of the club, announced the name change as a way of paying tribute to J.S. Lavoie.
Lavoie was a French Canadian who attended Bishop Guilfoyle and played hockey for the Marauders his senior year. He had returned to his home following graduation and went on to college. In April of 2008 he lost his battle with cancer. He was twenty-three years old.
No admission was charge for the showcase event but a free-will offering was taken. The $201.00 donated was presented to Sister Paula’s food pantry and soup kitchen by Varsity Head Coach Antesberger on Tuesday, Dec. 30.

The Bishop Guilfoyle Ice Hockey Club received a $1,500.00 grant on Dec. 16, from the Altoona Rotary Club and its community oriented Rotary Radio Days promotion.
The check was presented by Kate Shaffer to Ken Partner who is acting as a liaison for the hockey club this year. The money is earmarked for the purchase of hockey equipment to be provided as “loaner” gear to any student in Blair County who wants to try the sport.
“We’ve found that the major obstacle for parents of children who have expressed interest in ice hockey is the cost of equipment,” Mr. Partner explained. “By having equipment available on a loaner basis that obstacle is removed.”
The club began its promotion of the “loaner” program in October making use of equipment that was donated by those who have been playing the sport and grew out of it.
“We opened our membership to all those wishing to participate and we had an explosion of interest, I believe because of the cost free nature of equipment,” Rick Barrett, hockey club president pointed out. The program grew from 28 players last year to more than 80 this year.
“The Rotary grant was a key piece of our developmental hockey pie,” he added. “Because of the high number of participants and the availability of the loaner equipment, the cost is kept to a minimum.”
Following meetings among Head Coach John Antesberger, Partner and former Johnstown Chief and Russian Dynamo product Dmitri Tarabrin the program was structured to include basic skating instruction headed by Galactic Ice Skating Director John Kauffman, several on-ice clinic sessions by Tarabrin and a weekly staff of about eight on-ice instructors, along with Marauder Varsity and Junior High players acting as on-ice counselors.
For the youngest group the classes are set up to include skills and drills and small-area games to allow more meaningful time for participants to develop as hockey players.
“The key to the success of the program has been the ratio of about one on-ice instructor for every five or six players at the primary grade, elementary grade and junior high levels,” Antesberger commented.
There are more than 30 participants in grades K through 5, another 30 plus in grades 6 through 9 and 18 at the varsity level. There are boys and girls and they are home-schooled or enrolled in the area parochial schools and public schools in the Altoona, Bellefonte, Bellwood-Antis, Tyrone, Hollidaysburg, Spring Cove and Williamsburg.

08 Summer Ice Concludes
For the summer of 2008 the Bishop Guilfoyle Hockey program conducted ten free open ice sessions. From time-to-time we were visited by alumni who joined in the skates with new and returning skaters. The attendance of these ice sessions was better than ever! We averaged between 24 to 28 boys and girls each session.
Our coaches enjoyed visiting with all of our hockey family throughout the summer and look forward to working with the boys and girls in their upcoming season. The calendar is up with practices blocks set aside for our entire program starting October 12th. Specific times will be assigned the closer we get to our start date.
If you haven't yet reserved your roster spot you need to do so ASAP. Spaces are filling up quickly at all levels (elementary, jr high and varsity). RESERVE ROSTER SPOT HERE

Nemesis denies BG again
March 12, 2008 --
Taming a bouncing puck is a difficult task to pull off.
It’s even more of a demand with 16 square feet of open net staring you in the face and your team trailing by one goal with eight seconds remaining in a championship game.
The Conemaugh Valley High School hockey team dodged a bullet and escaped Galactic Ice with a 2-1 win over Bishop Guilfoyle in the Laurel Mountain Hockey League championship game Tuesday night thanks to a puck that skidded off of a blade waiting for an equalizer attempt.
Sam Peoples couldn’t corral and pull the trigger on a skipping one-time centering pass that may have found the back of the net and sent the contest to overtime.
“The net is six feet wide. He had four feet of wide-open net. The puck just trickled off the toe of his blade,” first-year Bishop Guilfoyle coach John Antesberger said with a slight grin. “That’s hockey. What are you going to do, you know?”
“To me, it was one bounce,” Conemaugh Valley coach Matt Yingling said. “That game could have gone either way, without a doubt. It was our night. We got the bounces.”
After a scoreless opening period, Conemaugh Valley notched its two goals 2:12 apart in the second.
Johny Poloyak lit the lamp on a slap shot from the right circle with 4:41 left in the period. Zack Podrasky added another minutes later on a dump-in that got caught up in a defender’s jersey and fell to the ice in perfect position for a shot on net.
The Marauders had a tough time putting the offense together as they were out-shot, 10-1, in the opening period. Bishop Guilfoyle finished with 17 shots on goal.
“We came out flying,” Yingling said. “They kinda frustrated us. They played good defense. We’ve got a lot of offensive fire. We were out-playing them, but we weren’t out-scoring them.”
“We weathered the storm, and it’s pretty much what I expected,” Antesberger said. “They threw everything including the kitchen sink at us in the first period. In the second period, we started getting some shots, got a little confidence.”
Bishop Guilfoyle answered with a power-play tally 1:25 later.
Peoples took a shot from the right point on a set play that found the pad of Conemaugh Valley goaltender Eric Bader. Joe Belis was waiting and cleaned up the rebound to put the Marauders on the board.
Freshman goaltender Zach McConnell was kept busy most of the night for the Marauders. He saw 26 shots and was credited with 24 saves, although the post helped on two Brandon Kolesar point-blank shots late in the first period.
“[Tuesday night] is the best game I’ve ever seen him play,” said Antesberger of his goalie. “He rose to the occassion as a ninth grader. I can’t speak more highly of the performance he had.”
The Jays are 2-for-2 in championship games — both against the Marauders — since they made the move from the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League. Last year, Conemaugh Valley defeated Bishop Guilfoyle, 3-1, in the Laurel Highlands High School Hockey League championship.
“I’m really happy. I love the league,” Yingling said. “This is where I feel our team — this is where we should have been a long time ago. It’s a good, competitive league.”
The future is bright for the young Marauders. Of the 14 players dressed for Tuesday’s game, six were freshman and four were sophomores.
“They are going to be a scary team in the future,” Yingling said. “For them to hang with us — and we have eight seniors. They are going to be good.”
“Those freshman and sophomores played great all year. I’m excited with what we will be able to do,” Antesberger said. “The future is now for this group.”

February 13, 2008 - 06:00 PM --
The varsity Marauders continued their improved play in recent weeks and have boosted their record to 8-4-1 to move into second place, just ahead of Central PA’s Wolves.
BG holds the tie-breaker if it ties Central PA at season’s end. The teams played to a tie in their first meeting, Central PA took the second game by a 4-2 count and the Marauders rebounded with a 10-2 win to give them the edge in goals allowed, goals scored and goal differential in the series.
The Marauders will need help if they hope to overtake league-leading Conemaugh Valley because the Jays hold the tie-breaker edge, having won the first two games of the three-game season series.
Senior Sam Peoples has moved to the head of the pack in scoring for the purple and gold, but many other players are contributing by scoring and filling their roles in the Marauders’ game scheme and Freshman Goalie Zach McConnell has risen to the challenge in several recent games.

The Bishop Guilfoyle Ice Hockey Program is seeking sponsors for the 2007-2008 season. For six years our program has been providing young people from our Diocese an outlet for their energy and a forum for their development of hockey and life skills.
As a sponsor, your business will be associated with the strongest and fastest-growing scholastic hockey program in the area. Last season the Marauder Varsity won the Laurel Highlands League title with its best record in the team’s brief history.
Our program encourages and helps train players to aspire to play at the next levels of hockey (juniors or collegiate). Six of our program’s players participated and won State and District titles at the USA Hockey Tier I and Tier II levels and five incoming freshmen and Varsity Head Coach John Antesberger competed for National titles this spring.
Like many amateur sports programs, our players have enthusiasm, motivation and talent. Our success depends upon much more. Parents and players cover much of the cost of the programs, but we must rely on the support of businesses like yours to meet our funding requirements to maintain and build upon our established level of excellence.
